After seven matches we finally know the winner of the America’s Cup: Alinghi, the swish defender. Emirates Team New Zealand couldn’t defeat the last year winner and lost the 32nd America’s Cup Match with the score 2 to 5. Only 2 victories that’s all that the New Zealand Team obtained from their confrontation with Alinghi.
After two victories in the row obtained by the challenger the Swish pull themselves up and won four matches in a row. The final race was maybe the closest and the most exciting in America’s Cup in recent history. In this final confrontation Emirates Team New Zealand spent much of the race ahead on the advantage line and did everything possible to keep Alinghi behind, the Swish managed to win the race by – you won’t going to believe this – a second. What’s a second? Noting! A blink of an eye, a moment or maybe the difference between winning and losing. And then that second means everything you worked for, everything you fought for.
Shortly after crossing the finishing line to guarantee the successful defense, Alinghi President and afterguard member Ernesto Bertarelli hoisted the America’s Cup trophy over his head, his team at his side, in front of a crowd of nearly 40 000 who had gathered in Port America’s Cup to share in the excitement. The skipper of the inning team declared: “This is a fantastic day for Alinghi. To win the America’s Cup again after four years of hard work. The crew, the designers and the shore team have done an incredible job throughout the series; we have fought hard against a strong challenger and have won. We’ll be celebrating tonight!” and they really deserved to celebrate.
It was a fantastic competition! All the teams did their best to win the right to challenge Alinghi and only one succeeded. Too bad they didn’t complete their dream to win the trophy. How knows maybe next time?!
