Against extraordinary odds, following damage to their keel and a subsequent pitstop to Bundaberg in Queensland for nearly seven days, Queenslanders Murray Bucknall and Jon Sayer have brought Ryu-Jin-Fgi home fourth on line in the 2007 Melbourne Osaka double handed yacht race yesterday.
The new Sayer 39.37 ft. from Mooloolaba, with her designer aboard, finished with an elapsed time of 35 days 04 hours 58 minutes 44 seconds, arriving in time to appreciate a beautiful Osaka sunset.
The Victorian yacht Dekadence has overcome a race-long challenge from the Japanese rival Tamagomalu to finish fifth over the line in the 2007 Melbourne Osaka yacht race this morning.
Phil Coombs and Peter ‘Pee Wee’ Walsh finished the 5,500 nautical mile race with an elapsed time of 35 days 20 hours 56 mimutes 03 seconds. From all accounts, “The Odd Couple” had the Japanese in fits of laughter on their arrival in Osaka.
Japanese entry Tamagomalu this afternoon became the sixth yacht to cross the finish line of the 5,500 nautical mile 2007 Melbourne Osaka yacht race.
Makoto Hisamatsu and is Queensland co-skipper Jimmi ‘The Magician” Doherty finished the race with an elapsed time of 36 days 03 hours 16 minutes 12 seconds, after battling Dekadence for most of the distance. Like those before them, the windless bay leading to the Osaka finish line meant a slow crawl to the line.
