Fountain Mercury’s 35 Lightning takes performance to a new level. The twin 525 EFIs engine can accelerate to speeds in excess of 100 mph, guaranteeing you’ll get to your destination in a real hurry.
If anybody ever packaged a speeding bullet and called it a boat, this is it. It’s a slightly scaled down version of the Lightning hulls that have conquered the world of offshore racing. Reggie Fountain said, “This boat is a sneak attack. It’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing”.
Engine
35 Lightning
The 35 Lighting is packed whit Twin Staggered Mercury 525 EFI w/Bravo 1-XR/SSM engine that produces enough power to reach a top speed of 100 mph. The engine compartment featured two hatches that opened wide. With the port engine forward, the big-block motors were mounted on blue-painted L-angles that were through-bolted to the stringers.
Exterior
According to the manufacturer, the hull and deck of the 35 Lighting were hand laid with multidirectional fiberglass, high-density coring and interplastic vinyl ester resin. Coring was included in high-stress areas in the hull and lifting strakes to provide additional strength.
Interior
35 Lightning
The interior of the Fountain Mercury 35 Lightning is more inviting than that of the older models mostly because of the richer colors of the cockpit and cabin. Fountain Powerboats created for the 35 Lighting a more comfortable U shape lounge that makes people to spend more time in the cabin. The galley is on the port side of the boat followed by an enclosed head locker. In the cockpit the rear bench has tree bolster seats whit headrests built in the engine hatches. The Livorsi Marine gauges are set in carbon-fiber panels to match the boat’s paint. Latham Marine provided the helm and full hydraulic steering.
Test drive
The 35 Lighting provides a very fast ride whit a top speed of 100 mph. The acceleration is quite good: accelerating from 30 mph to 50 mph takes 7.2 seconds and from 40 mph to 60 mph 8.9 seconds. At 70 mph the boat stays securely hooked up even through several arcing turns. In slalom turns at 40 and 50 mph, the boat transitioned seamlessly from side to side. A big deal for the driver and the passengers of the 35 Lighting is the windshield that actually deflects the wind at all speeds making it easy to talk.
The Fountain Mercury 35 Lightning is a well balanced boat providing a soft ride for its passengers.
Conclusion
The Formula 35 Lighting is a boat that offers everything you can dream from a boat: great top speed, the latest technology, performance and fine interior.
