Racing yachts

Racing yachts try to reduce the wetted surface area (which creates drag) by keeping the hull light whilst having a deep and heavy bulb keel, allowing them to support a tall mast with a great sail area. Modern designs tend to have a very wide beam, with a flat bottom, to provide buoyancy preventing an excessive heel angle. Speeds of up to 40 mph can be obtained in good conditions.

This weekend, April 14-15, the teams and drivers of the XLR8 Home Loans Australian F1 Superboat Series will return to Toukley’s Lake Budgewoi for Round Two of the 2007 Championship. Alinghi excels while +39 suffers damage on a tough day in Valencia

It was another difficult day to be racing on the waters off Valencia. The wind was strong, but still very shifty, and no lead was safe until the finish line had been crossed. Behind them, the mixed up results mean five boats are within two points of second place, with BMW ORACLE Racing and Emirates Team New Zealand a shade (...)

BVI Spring Regatta 2007 - results

First Day It’s been a wild and wonderful time for racing in the first day of competition in the 2007 BVI Spring Regatta. Wind was not lacking but rather too much for some boats that struggled to keep from broaching in gusts up to 26 knots. Others reveled in the brisk breeze and turned wind into pure power. Sailing in over 15 knots of breeze from the northeast, rather than the prevailing southeast, under cloudy skies and intermittent rain, boats on the Norman course sailed one race in (...)

The 32nd America’s Cup - Race 1

In one of the most extraordinary races ever witnessed in America’s Cup racing, BMW ORACLE Racing sailed from 7th to 1st on the final fickle run of Race 1 in Valencia Louis Vuitton Act 13. Starting in 7 knots of breeze, the American team had won the left-hand end of the start line an hour and a half earlier but, with Emirates Team New Zealand next to them, sailed into oblivion as the boats on the right started to benefit from better wind from that side of the race track. Alinghi who (...)
