The Nissan GT-R will thankfully not be the one trick pony we were all lead to believe a few months ago. Nissan has already confirmed that the company is indeed planning a new generation sports car, but that it won’t arrive for at least another five years. Wipe the tears and stifle the grunts because they’re at least going to throw us a bone with a new facelift for the 2013 model year.

The 2013 Nissan GT-R will feature significant changes to the exterior design and the engine, which is a good thing considering the long wait ahead of us for the new generation. The 2013 model year will also mark the GT-R’s sixth anniversary, making an extravagant facelift something of a certainty. All we know as of right now is that it will feature a new bumper and new headlamps. Hopefully, there’s a lot more up Nissan’s sleeve,

As for the next generation, Kazutoshi Mizuno - chief engineer and product specialist of the GT-R - said that Nissan is watching the development of the upcoming Acura NSX closely since Honda has already announced that their hybrid NSX will lap the Nurburgring faster than the GT-R. That direct hit to the GT-R should light a fire under Nissan’s rear end to make their next generation bigger and badder. Part of that more extravagant package should be a new and competitive hybrid system.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Mark this date on you calendar, as this is the day that you found out that Mercedes-Benz will no longer manufacture its own V-12 engines. Okay, maybe it’s not that big of a deal, considering the task of building these engines is simply being outsourced to its performance arm, AMG. This is most likely due to the fact that AMG has more models that utilize the Mercedes V-12 engine or it could be a very slick way for Mercedes to earn more customers.

This can also lead to more boutique automakers seeking help from AMG with their V-12 engines, much like Pagani did with the Huayra . Not many automakers would like to say “Yeah, we have a Mercedes engine,” but who in their right mind wouldn’t be impressed with “Our supercar boasts a V-12 AMG engine.”

Not only is the production of the engines moving to AMG, but so are the manufacturing principles. AMG believes in the one-man-one-engine system, which means that each engine has only one person touching it. According to the report, this process will be applied to even regular old Mercedes V-12 engines, not just AMG models.

The assumption is that the first Mercedes-Benz to boast of an AMG 12-cylinder engine will be the 2014 S600 , but we could see something come even sooner than that. Either way, this can be nothing but a good thing for Mercedes, we just wonder why it didn’t think of this earlier.


Such exaggerated claims of that title might fly over the head of other auto manufacturers, but not with Pagani . After all, the Italian automaker is most famous for their exclusive products that cost well over a million dollars.

So when they come out with a man bag - yep, a man bag - you know that it would feel completely out of place in the shelves of K-Mart. Looking at this fashionable money hole, the Pagani man bag draws inspiration from the shapes, styles, and the materials used on the company’s pride and joy, the Pagani Huayra.

A plethora of high-end materials were also used in the making of the bag; looking at it, there’s high-end leather, aluminum, and hold on...are there some touches of carbon fiber too?

With Pagani, you can never be all too surprised if there really is carbon fiber on that bag. Still no word on how much this man bag will cost, but rest assured, there will probably be a lot digits attached to it.

Like the actual jaguars that rely on four legs to mobilize, automaker Jaguar has introduced all-wheel-drive versions of their XJ and XF models in selected markets, alongside stars Jane Krakowski and Tracy Morgan, and figure skater Johnny Weir. The ironic thing is that the UK - Jaguar’s homeland - isn’t expected to be one of these markets as strong competition from other automakers has limited the company from increasing its 5% share of the luxury saloon market.

In any case, the XJ and XF models will retain all of their technical specs with the exception of some significant changes to the drive system, which will now use an all-wheel-drive system that will split torque equally between the front and rear wheels. Most of its power, though, will still be directed to the rear wheels in standard conditions in order to maximize the car’s overall efficiency.

In addition, the ’AWD’-badged XJ and XF models will also get the treat of receiving the company’s new 3.0-liter supercharged engine with 335 horsepower on tap and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine, according to Jaguar, will see an increase in efficiency - about 5% - from the current 5.0-liter V8s that are fitted into the current model. The more efficient powertrain will also see an improved mileage of 29 miles to the gallon. Finally, the car’s suspension set-up will also be tinkered with in order to retain the same driving feel as that of its rear-wheel-drive counterparts.

With the UK out of the question, Jaguar is looking at other markets to bring the ’AWD’ XF and XJ models, including North America, Russia, China and Continental Europe.


Almost all of the major car manufacturers are figuring out ways to go to smaller displacement engines with fewer cylinder, yet the same horsepower. This is leading to turbocharged V-6 engines replacing V-8 engines and turbo V-8s replacing V-10s and V-12s. From the looks of things, Bentley is taking a different approach.

According to reports, Bentley is moving toward larger 12-cylinder engines and away from their turbocharged V-8 engines. We’re not sure exactly why Bentley is going this route, as it is opposite of the trend, but that very well may be the only reason. This would give Bentley the exclusivity that it needs to get a leg up on its rival, Rolls Royce.

Then again, maybe Volkswagen has a slew of 6.0-liter W-12 engines left over from its W-12-powered Phaeton, which was cut from the lineup in 2012, and is deciding to fit V-8 Bentleys with this massive hunk of 444-horsepower-producing metal.

Then again, with the Azure T’s 6.8, err, we mean six-and-three-quarter-liter engine pumping out just 450 horsepower and getting 9 mpg, the 12 mpg and 444 ponies that the W-12 pumps out looks tempting. Add a little boost to it to increase the torque from its 406 pound-feet mark and you have an engine that is not only more powerful, but gets better fuel economy than the turbocharged Bentley V-8 engine.

We’ll keep an eye on this and let you know what Bentley’s plans are just as soon as we know what exactly is going on.

Spyker C8 Aileron

So Spyker was all set up to have a bad-ass new engine for its C8 Aileron, a 6.2-liter LSA V-8 from General Motors. This is the same plant that you’ll find under the nose of a Corvette ZR-1 and Cadillac CTS-V . Now, Spyker is suing GM for $3 billion over its blocking Spyker from selling Saab to Youngman Lotus, thereby sending Spyker into bankruptcy. Yeah, that will end any relationship these two had.

So, with Spyker likely left with no engine supplier for the C8 Aileron, we need to take a look and at where exactly it can dig up some ponies to try and pull a profit. Let’s have a look at potential suitors and what they have to offer.

Before we start, we have to keep in mind a few rules here. Spyker can’t just run off and ask other boutique automakers, like Aston Martin and Jaguar, to borrow an engine for a car that will compete with them. It needs to find one from a supplier that just wants its name out there in a supercar.

McLaren MP4-12C

We mentioned a few months ago about how advancements in turbocharging is starting to render V-8 and larger engines obsolete . As much as readers may not have wanted to hear that, it is true. For additional confirmation, we now have supercar builder, McLaren, in our corner.

In a recent interview with De Telegraaf’s Autovisie, McLaren managing director, Antony Sheriff, was quoted saying that “the V-12 engine is a thing of the past” and “the engine belongs in a museum.” Just as we pointed out, Sheriff claims that a boosted V-8 can pump out the same horsepower and more torque than a naturally aspirated V-12, plus it is lighter, less complex, and boasts better fuel economy.

Sheriff went on to further solidify our stance, as he explains that turbocharged V-6 engines may have a place in the supercar world as replacements for naturally aspirated V-8 engines. Granted, this is only the opinion of one automaker and it is not one of the big-three supercar builders – Lamborghini , Ferrari , and Porsche – so it doesn’t mean the V-12, V-10, and V-8 engines are going away just yet.

Having said that, we still hold firm in our belief that, in the next decade, the V-12 and V-10 engines will not be able to survive in a world of $5-per-gallon gasoline. Inside of this time period, smaller displacement engines and electric motors will replace these large, fuel-hungry engines. For now, we at least know that McLaren is on-board with the much-needed changeover.

International Engine of the Year Awards are in and BMW Cleaned House

We have all heard of Superchips in our lifespans at some point. Well, at least us motorheads obsessed with squeezing every ounce out of our engine that we can. Superchips sells and markets vehicle ECM/ECU/PCM remapping via an installed chip. These are typically good for a few extra ponies without any major overhauling needed.

The Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, which recently took home the International Engine of the Year Award , really pumps out a fair amount of power (127 horsepower and 149 pound-feet of torque) for a little 3-cylinder plant. It looks like Superchips has decided that wasn’t quite enough, as it has recently released a remapping chip for the 1.0-liter Ford engine that pumps its power up to 145 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque. It does this without affecting its 56.6 mpg rating either.

This chip runs ₤499, which translates out to $713 at the current exchange rate. $713 for an 18 horsepower and 18 pound-feet increase isn’t too bad. This is especially true when considering that it has no adverse effect on the mpg.

This hits home when we consider that Ford has already told us that the 1.0-liter engine is coming to the U.S. in 2013, which will likely be in the Fiesta . Considering the Fiesta hits 60 mph in 8.7 seconds with its current 1.6-liter engine that musters 120 horsepower and 112 pound-feet of torque, dropping some weight because of a smaller engine and adding 25 horsepower and 55 pound-feet of torque will get drivers a nice bump in acceleration. That means with this upgrade, the compact Fiesta can likely hit 60 mph in around the 7-second mark, which is damn good for a compact hatch.

Now we just have to wait and see if Superchips will offer this upgrade in the U.S.

Porsche Macan

In the past few weeks, Porsche has been busy developing both the 918 Spyder and the upcoming Cayenne Junior - aka Macan . Today, our spy photographers have caught the car testing one more time, and luckily, they have also managed to take the first shots of the interior.

The interior images aren’t as clear as all of us would like them to be, but they are still enough to see that the next Macan will be stuffed with all of the latest technology. Some of these elements may even be borrowed from the new Boxster’s interior, including the information on the on-board computer, communication, audio settings, and the navigation system being displayed on a high-resolution TFT color screen. Other elements include a 3-spoke sports steering wheel and all kinds of leather goodness.

As for the engines to be used in the next Macan, Porsche has already confirmed that the SUV will get a 370 HP 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine for the Turbo version, as well as a new four-cylinder engine with an output of about 220 HP. There will also be a diesel version for markets like Europe, and a hybrid version that could combine a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with an electric motor.

The new Porsche Macan will go into production in 2013, so we should get tons more information before that time comes. Stay tuned!

Porsche 550

Porsche ’s future entry level models have been rumored to sport a new four-cylinder horizontally opposed gasoline engine, but Porsche Canada CEO, Joe Lawrence, is trying to nip that in the bid. Lawrence was recently at the ALMS race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park when he confirmed that the flat-four is definitely just a rumor.

At that point, everyone could basically let the flat four rumor go, but Lawrence immediately followed that statement up with the fact that he would actually like to see it sometime in the future. If everyone’s not on board with letting it go then the flat four cannot possibly be dead in the water, so we’re back to square one...again.

The four-cylinder horizontally opposed gasoline engine was initially rumored to be used for the upcoming baby Boxster (aka 550) which has been put on hold due to the lack of expected demand. What we see happening is new fuel economy regulations making it necessary for the four-pot to be used, even for the Baby Boxster when it gets dragged off the backburner, as well as for the Cayman . Automakers can’t make their decisions based on the market sometimes because the government forces their hand when it comes to strict environmental guidelines and as Lawrence said, "Porsche is not exempt from increasingly strict emissions and fuel economy regulations" and it’s "more likely that you’ll see more turbocharging in more vehicles moving forward." The government is, after all, the puppeteer in this stage show.
