Alfa-Romeo Junior http://www.topspeed.com/cars/alfa-romeo-junior/ke2903.html Alfa-Romeo Junior The preproduction Alfa Romeo MiTo was known as the Alfa Romeo Junior before the compact city car's official name was released. At the time there were not many details known about the Junior, only that it was designed heavily with cues from the Alfa Romeo 8C super car and was meant to compete head to head with other compact cars like the Mini Cooper, Renault Clio and Volkswagen Polo. <![CDATA[Alfa Romeo prepares a sports coupe]]> http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/alfa-romeo-prepares-a-sports-coupe-ar69588.html

Just because the world is focusing on smaller cars, doesn’t mean they can’t be fun. For example Alfa Romeo will not only be using the MiTo platform to make the ultimate hot hatch MiTo GTA, but will now also use the little guy as the basis for a new sports coupe.

Rumored to be called the Junior (the origional name for the MiTo), the new coupe is rumored to share parts with Lancia’s possible rebirth of the Fulvia. Although the Junior isn’t expected to get the MiTo GTA’s 240bhp 1.8-liter turbocharged engine, it should be able to get around on a 1.4-liter turbo four cylinder making 130 hp.

If the current economy doesn’t kill off Alfa’s little coupe, it may be on the streets of Europe by 2011. If we get really lucky (and the 500 does well in the U.S.,) maybe Fiat will drop a few Juniors on the boat to North America.

<![CDATA[Alfa Romeo Junior caught testing]]> http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/alfa-romeo-junior-caught-testing-ar53828.html

Alfa Romeo will launch the Junior this autumn at the Paris Motor Show. Based on the Fiat Grande Punto platform, Junior will go on sale in spring 2009 at a price of £10,000.

Under the hood there will be a wide range of engines starting with the 95bhp 1.4-litre petrol for the base version. There will also be a 130bhp 1.9-litre diesel. The rest of the range will be powered by a turbocharged version of the 1.4-litre petrol. Fiat currently offers that engine in 120, 135, 155 and 178bhp forms, across the 500 and Punto ranges. There’s no word yet on which variations will appear in the Alfa, but expect the 178bhp engine to top the range.

The Alfa Junior will feature chromed door handles, both inside and out. Expect the Alfa’s interior to feature the same basic layout as its sister Fiat, but with recessed dials on the dash and a sense of Italian style that Alfa hopes will surpass the Mini’s retro chic.
