BMW->ke178 tuner extraordinaire Alpina->ke1232 is at the Tokyo Motor Show->ke1834 and it's displaying a new program with it for the auto world to see. This one, called the B4 BiTurbo Coupe, is based on the BMW 4 Series, and true to Alpina's reputation, the program comes chock-full with upgrades that have effectively turned the 4 Series into a real performance machine.

You expect something like this from Alpina, especially when you take into account its history of building some of the nastiest programs for BMW vehicles. With the new 4 Series, the German tuner's capabilities now extends to another model.

That's all well and good because you can't have enough Alpina-tuned BMWs running around the streets this day. This one's a real treat, too. It has some subtle yet effective aero updates, an awesome performance modification and added work done on the chassis and suspension of the sports coupe->ke141.

Everything's here, really, and a good way for Alpina to start its 4 Series programs.

Spy shots

The prototype that our spy photographers caught today wears some small camouflage. This lack of coverage means that Alpina will focus its work in the engine compartment, and not on the car's exterior.

Exterior updated look to include a new front spoiler, a sportier rear bumper and a new spoiler on the trunk.

Exterior

Truth be told, Alpina kept the exterior look of the car relatively tame with just a few subtle upgrades, including new front and rear spoilers, a stainless steel sports exhaust system, and a new set of 20-inch, Alpina Classic wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

Interior

Meanwhile, the interior received some nice digs, too, including a comprehensive Lavalina leather dress-up on the electrically adjustable heated sports seats and the hand-stitched sports steering wheel. Upgrades on the door sills, as well as new floor mats, and emblems on the seatbacks and instrumentation add that personalized Alpina touch that's essential to make the car stand out from the pack.

Drivetrain

The BMW 4 Series is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that normally produces 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. But thanks to Alpina's aftermarket work, the output of the sports coupe now reaches 410 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, good enough to hit 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds to go with a top speed of 189 mph.

Even better, the program was done with equal attention paid to fuel efficiency. With these upgrades, the B4 BiTurbo Coupe can still return 30.9 mpg with CO2 emissions of 177 g/km.

Pricing

Pricing has not been announced, but Alpina did say that the program is scheduled to hit dealerships in May of next year.

Competition

Audi S5 Coupe by Senner Tuning

From a noted BMW tuner comes a competitor that knows how to work on Audis. Recently, Senner Tuning released its own program for the Audi A5 Coupe, a car regarded as the 4 Series Coupe's direct competitor.

Like Alpina, Senner Tuning was able to significantly increase the output of the A5 Coupe, pushing the capabilities of its 3.0 liter, supercharged V-6 engine to produce 446 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque, good enough to hit 0-60 mph in a little over four seconds to go with a top speed of 186 mph.

BMW M4

The BMW M4 is expected to arrive on the market sometime at the beginning of 2014. It will feature the same exterior design language as the upcoming M3, but it will be taken to a sportier level.

Under the hood, the M4 carries an 3.0-liter, in-line six-cylinder engine with an output of 430 horsepower. The Concept M4 Coupe previewed the production M4 at pebble beach, and let us in on what to expect from the upcoming coupe.

Audi RS5

The Audi RS5 is one of our favorite sports coupes. It features a great exterior look, plus a 4.2-liter, V-8 engine that delivers 450 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and a 317.15 pound-feet of torque available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm.

This amount of power is enough to sprint the RS5 from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and up to 173.98 mph without the speed limiter.

Conclusion

There's nothing bad you can say about Alpina. The company has continuously produced one impressive program after another and its safe to say that its first stab at the BMW 4 Series is another bona fide winner. We would've liked to see more aero upgrades, but we understand that Alpina doesn't roll that way. This company is more substance over style, over and above anything else.
