Audi A5

The Audi A5 is a full size luxury sport back model that was introduced in 2008 just above the A4 sedan in the German automaker’s lineup, aimed at competing head to head with the BMW 3 Series coupe and convertible by replacing the A4 Cabriolet. The A5 comes equipped with everything from a 180 HP 2.0 Liter TFSI motor to a 333 HP supercharged V6. Meanwhile the top of the line S5 features distinct bold bodywork and is powered by a 4.2 Liter FSI V8 making 349 HP and 325 lb-ft of torque. Rumors suggest that Audi is working on a very tantalizing RS5 making over 450 HP.

2009 Audi A5/S5 Convertible

Now that Audi has an official coupe based on the A4, it is only sensible that that car takes over the convertible duties as well. For 2009, Audi’s smallest drop tops in North America are now know as the A5/S5 Convertible.

The A5/S5 Cabriolet is being launched with three turbocharged gasoline engines, with power outputs ranging from 211 hp to 354 hp. There will also be two diesel engines that will not make it to the U.S. All five powerplants are fueled via direct injection; four of them use turbocharging. All cars will have some version that will feature the six-speed Tiptronic manumatic transmission. The continuously variable multitronic transaxle as well as a regular manual transmission are also available with certain engines and trims.

Expect these cars to show up in Audi showrooms across America by the fall of 2009 as 2010 models. But rememberer to look closely, as the picture below shows there’s not much difference between an A4 and an A5.

Press release after the jump.

Audi A5 Sportback spy shot

Speak of the devil... Yesterday we took a look at Porsche’s plans to sweeten a future Audi known as the A5 Sportback (an A5 with four-doors and a bigger trunk), and today AutoExpress seems to confirm the car’s existence with this spy shot. If all goes well, this A4-hatchback-in-denial will hit the streets the second half of 2009.

Based on the A5 coupe, the Sportback version will feature the same front-end, but there will be a high waistline and low, sloping roof. The engine line-up should remain unchanged: FSI and TDI engines with rated power ranging from 170 to 265 bhp.

While it is a little easier to understand why a four-door hatchback would want to exploit the slightly sportier name of the A5, statements noting that the A5 Sportback will keep the A5 coupe’s distinctive front-end styling is a little bit of a stretch. It’s kinda tough to tell the difference between the A4 and the A5 in the picture below.

Audi A5 gets new 2.0 TFSI engine

A newly developed Turbo FSI petrol engine available from this week for the Audi A5 provides the sought-after coupe with yet another choice blend of pace and pence-per-mile efficiency. The new 211PS A5 2.0 TFSI can be ordered in either front-wheel-drive or quattro permanent all-wheel-drive forms for £28,760 OTR or £30,285 OTR, and will reach its first UK customers in August.

The new high-tech 2.0-litre unit is derived from the already much praised 1.8 TFSI engine introduced recently in A3, A4 and A5 models, but takes its efficiency a step further still through the use of new Audi valvelift technology. By employing sliding cam units mounted on the intake camshaft that allow for more variation in the degree of valve lift, the engine is able to ‘breathe’ even more effectively, switching to a higher cam profile when strong acceleration is required, or a lower profile that requires less fuel and air compression when throttle usage is more relaxed.
