  The Audi R8 is the German automaker's current top of the line model based on the Le Mans Quattro concept car. Thanks to lightweight aluminum construction the mid engine super car weighed in at under 3,500 lbs when it was introduced in 2006. The original 4.2 Liter FSI V8 powered car made 420 HP and 320 lb-ft of torque sprinting the four wheel drive dream machine from 0 to 60 MPH in 4.4 sec, through the quarter mile in 12.8 sec at 113.2 MPH and up to 187 MPH while an updated version will offer a Lamborghini 5.2 Liter V10 making 520 HP and 390 lb-ft of thrust and gets to the 60 MPH mark in only 3.9 seconds and all the way up to 196.4 MPH. The road car is named after the LMP1 endurance race car that won the ALMS title from 2000 thru 2006 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2000 until 2005 only to be beaten in 2003 by a closed roof version from VW family member, the Bentley Speed 8.

Audi R8 E-Tron

Just yesterday it was reported that, despite previous rumors, the Audi R8 e-tron would be put into production, but in small quantities. However, that was yesterday and this is today, and in that short period of time, things have changed. According to AutoExpress, who is quoting an Audi spokesman, the electric version of the R8 has again been delayed indefinitely.

The same spokesman is reporting that Audi has built 10 different units, which are now being evaluated internally. The company, however, is "concerned about the limited range of pure electric cars with existing battery technology," and it does not think "customers are ready to accept it."

Audi now has a new head of technical development who is keeping a close eye on these kind of projects and once the technology improves things may change.

On the other hand, and despite these statements, Audi released full technical specs for the R8 e-tron. It will be powered by a pair of electric motors with a combined output of 376 horsepower. This output will be enough to sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and up to a top speed of 124 mph. On a full charge the car delivers a range of 134 miles.

Audi R8 E-Tron

Shortly after the Audi R8 E-tron became the fastest electric vehicle around the Nürburgring, rumors began floating around that it could be axed. When it was announced that Audi was eliminating the E-tron, the main reason was the high price of the batteries. As no surprise, however, things have changed and new reports suggest that the R8 E-tron will in fact live, but only in limited fashion.

Mark Dahncke, product and motorsports communications manager for Audi of America, said in a recent interview that "the R8 E-Tron project may still be continued in a very small volume of cars that has yet to be decided. What has been decided is that it will not be executed on a large scale production basis."

We don’t know about you, but we think that Audi considering the possibility of the E-tron making production a good decision, as Audi has dumped a ton of money in the research and development process. Unfortunately, if it does happen, the E-tron will only be available in small quantities. We guess a little bit of fun is better than none at all.

Back in 2012, we saw tons of upgrade packages for the Audi R8 V10 and it looks like 2013 has started in just as impressive fashion as the past year. The first Audi R8 tuning package of the New Year has been announced by the German tuner B&B and it is a good one.

The tuner offers two different upgrade levels for the V-10 engine. In stage 2, the standard power has been increased to an impressive 610 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. In stage 3, the output goes up to an even more impressive 628 horsepower and 431 pound-feet of torque. As a result the R8 V-10 will go from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in just 3.5 seconds, from 0 to 200 km/h (0 to 124 mph) in 10.8 seconds and hits a top speed of 203 mph.

The package also includes a new sport suspension system that lowers the car’s ride by 20 mm (0.7 inches) up front and 25 mm (0.98 inches) at the rear. The tuner is also offering a set of 19-inch or 20-inch wheels combined and a set of ceramic brakes.


We are slight fans of synchronized drifting, though you likely already know that. What can possibly be cooler than seeing multiple cars drifting around one another in perfect time, just missing each other by mere inches? Well, the only thing we can think of is a motorcycle and a car pulling off this feat. Not just any motorcycle and car either, but two of the baddest ones around – an Audi R8 5.2 and BMW S1000RR , respectively.

With 704 horsepower between the two – 525 to the Audi and 179 to the BMW – these two kick up all sorts of smoldering rubber in the process of wagging their respective tails all over this closed track. To boot, the motorcycle driver pulls off some downright incredible stunts in the process of drifting like a madman.

The Audi R8 joins in a little bit late in the video, but holds its own. For the most part, however, the Audi is more of a very expensive prop for the Beemer .

VF Engineering is really into breaking the mold when it comes to developing programs for some of the world’s finest supercars. The American aftermarket company definitely knows a power upgrade when they see one and their latest offering for the mighty German beast, the Audi R8 V10 , is no different.

With some help from fellow Audi aftermarket wizard Stassis Engineering, VF Engineering took the R8 V10’s massive 5.2-liter engine and made serious work out of it, highlighted by the addition of a bolt on roots style supercharger system and an Eaton/Magnuson TVS2300 four-lobe roots blower with an air/water aftercooling system that boosts up the R8 V10’s output from the standard 520 horsepower and 390 pounds-per-feet of torque figures all the way up to 720 horsepower and 590 pounds-per-feet of torque. That impressive bump in output is particularly jacked up because of the resulting lag-free instant punch of 5psi from as little as 2,000rpm, with the boost gradually climbing all the way up to 6.5psi at redline.

And should the R8 V10 be using a 91 or 93 octane, the stock engine programming is then recalibrated by VF courtesy of an OBD2 port electronic flash.

For all of the program’s downright awesomeness, there is one bit of bad news out there for anybody interested in getting this package. It’s not compliant with the California Air Resourse Board and cannot be used on public roads in California.

Wait, what?

Prior Design has announced a new tuning kit for theAudi R8 sports car. Called PD GT650, the new kit is made from high-quality Dura-Flex FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and features an excellent surface finish that provides sufficient flexibility combined with high stability.

The aerodynamic kit includes a new front bumper with side vents included, a new front lip spoiler and front fenders. Updates continue at the rear with a new bumper with side vents, a new diffuser and wing, plus a racecar-inspired roof scoop. Prior design is also offering new side skirts and a new set of wheels painted in black with red insertions.

The tuner made no updates under the hood, but we believe a 430-horsepower, V-8 engine is more than enough for a sports car.

The price for the new PD GT650 kit is €19,900 - or about $26,200 at the current exchange rates. Not too shabby.

If you thought the Audi R8 China Edition was rare, then you’ll be shocked to know that there’s a limited-edition model that’s even rarer than that. This is the Audi R8 V10 Limited Edition and, as its name suggests, Audi is only building a select number of these babies — 30 in all — for the Chinese market. To distinguish itself from the rest of the R8s out there, including the aforementioned China Edition, Audi decided to dress up the R8 Limited Edition in a unique Nordic Gold paint finish that, on looks alone, can make a serious case as a permanent color option for the R8.

Aesthetic modifications are also abound for this limited-run model, highlighted by front and rear air intakes and outlets, lightweight tailpipes, and a radiator grille that has been finished in matte black. The dress up continues with the front and rear slats. Additionally, the rear bumper, and the radiator grille surround and bars all sport a matte-titanium-grey finish. The front spoiler, side blades, fixed rear wing and the enlarged diffuser have been upgraded to carbon matte.

Inside, the R8 Limited Edition features sports bucket seats and headlining, both of which have been dressed with black Alcantara with contrasting stitching and piping, and the knee pad now comes in shark skin black with its own contrast stitching. Carbon matte, or at least inlays of it, was also used inside, particularly the A-pillar and the door pulls. To assert the limited-edition nature of this R8, the aluminum gear knob comes with a limited edition number, ranging from 1 to 33 with the numbers 4, 14, and 24 excluded from the list. Why, you ask? The number "4" equates to bad mojo for the Chinese.

Audi China has priced the R8 Limited Edition at 2,628,000 yuan, which is around $420,000 based on current exchange rates, an amount that affluent and passionate Chinese auto enthusiasts won’t have trouble shelling out.

We totally get why automakers from all over the world are suddenly falling over themselves trying to get some love in China. After all, it’s already the world’s largest auto market and the wide diversity of buyers in the country has given automakers of all levels opportunity to establish themselves and gain some footing in the market.

For its offering, Audi decided to build an R8 V10 China Edition specifically for this purpose. The car is limited to only 80 units and comes in a choice of two colors: Malibu Blue Body/Suzuka Grey Sideblades or the inverse Suzuka Grey Body/Malibu Blue Sideblades. Look at the photos and it’s easy to be enamored with the color choices Audi decided to use on the R8 China Edition.

In addition to the color choices, the R8 China Edition also makes prevalent use of ultra-light and high-strength carbon fiber. Both the R8’s body — the carbon matte fixed spoiler — and the interior are decked in carbon fiber, making for a true special edition model that lives up to the “special” designation. Rounding out the modifications for the 80-unit R8 China Edition is a set of 19-inch, high-gloss black wheels in a 5 twin-spoke “Y” design, further stamping the uniqueness and exclusivity of this special-edition supercar.

The interior of the R8 also strengthens its billing as a special edition. It includes the characters “R8 专享” to go with the model number embedded on the aluminum gear lever knob. Notice also that any number with a “4” on it has been removed to "respect the cultural habit of Chinese customers,” as it is considered unlucky – like the number 13 in the U.S., but intensified.

Adding to the supercar’s luxury swag are materials that include shark skin and colored stitching, the handbrake and steering wheel are wrapped in Alcantara, and the instrument shield is finished in carbon matte. Finally, R8 emblems also adorn the interior of the supercar, particularly on the dash and the aluminum door sill trims.

The entire cost of the R8 China Edition hits at 2,628,000 yuan, which is around $420,000 based on current exchange rates.

In the latest episode of "The Downshift" the crew over MotorTrend took a trip to Quattro GmbH, the birthplace of the the RS3 , RS4 , RS5 , RS6 and R8 . Since 1983, Audi ’s go-fast factory has been taking Audi sedans to the extreme and in 2006 it unveiled the R8, which has quickly become one of the worlds most sought after supercars.

The factory was founded in October 1983 and it is located on a 3,500-square-meter site in Neckarsulm, near Stuttgart, Germany. The factory specializes in producing high-performance Audi cars and components, and its name pays homage to Audi’s original four-wheel-drive, rally-inspired road car: the Audi Quattro.

Since Audi R8 dropped onto the market in 2008, it has been repeatedly recognized as one of the most gorgeous cars to brace the asphalt. That, of course, is because many people simply consider it a designing masterpiece. So, when companies like Regula Exclusive come with these kinds of tuning packages we can’t help but scratch our heads and wonder “why?”

Regula Exclusive’s body kit is made from aramid (aromatic polyamide) and it is offered for the coupe and roadster models. While everything in this body kit is taken to the extreme, that central air inlet and the two lateral "fellows" under the headlights are pretty over the top. In order to wrap your R8 in this kit, you’ll have to pony up €7,698 — about $9,950 at the current exchange rates.

If the body kit isn’t enough, Regula Exclusive also offers up a set of 20-inch Oxigin wheels measuring in at 8.5 inches wide at the front and 11 inches wide at the rear.

To avoid being 100-percent aesthetic, Regula Exclusive is also offering a tuning chip for €1,398 euro ($1,800) that will increase the output of your V-10 engine up to 560 horsepower – a 35-horsepower bump.

With exception to the tuning chip, we can live without this upgrade. However, this type of over-the-top kit just might be up your ally…
