A commanding performance and conscious understatement in their appearance, added to unlimited suitability for everyday use: these characteristics are featured on all Audi S models where they combine to form a perfectly harmonised vehicle concept. Each version has quattro permanent four-wheel drive as standard to transform the power into traction and motoring enjoyment.

The first Audi S2 Coupé was built in April 1990. Since then, a total of around 150,000 S models in the various model series have been produced. Audi currently offers seven models – the S3, the S4, the S4 Avant, the S4 Cabriolet, the S6, the S6 Avant and the S8.

The top sports model in the A4 line is the S4 with its potent V8 engine. The 4.2-litre version produces 253 kW (344 bhp) and puts 410 Nm of torque onto the crankshaft at 3,500 rpm. Its quattro permanent four-wheel drive and S sports suspension made of aluminium translate this power into maximum propulsion and driving fun. The new S4 is available as a saloon, an Avant and a Cabriolet.

The advent of a new model generation is evident at first glance: the opentop four-seater now has the single-frame grille that typifies the brand. The newly styled rear lights add a further visual touch. The car’s taut styling, clear surfaces and tension-packed shoulder line extending along the entire body are characteristic features of the S4 Cabriolet.

The car’s technology lives up to the promise made by its new styling: the A4 Cabriolet is being launched with two engines which are being offered in the Audi A4 Cabriolet for the very first time. FSI and turbo FSI represent the most advanced state of the art technology for gasoline engines. The sporty yet comfortable dynamic suspension converts the power delivered by these units into sheer driving pleasure – on every bend, on every mile of the journey. Innovative and highly sophisticated technologies are an integral part of practically all vehicle areas and components: the adaptive Bi-Xenon headlights are proof of this, as indeed is quattro permanent four-wheel drive.

The quality of materials and workmanship in the interior are of a standard that need not fear comparison with the luxury class. The architecture of the driver’s area, especially the cockpit – a perfect synthesis of ergonomics, function and design – is pioneering.

Design

The new Audi S4 Cabriolet expresses its supremacy by adopting a deliberately restrained appearance. A closer look, however, reveals that this stylish, sporty body is indeed subtly different in its basic form and proportions from the other Audi A4 Cabriolets: the bumper has large air inlets, the xenon headlights have a titanium-coloured surround behind the glass and the outside mirror housings have been given an aluminium finish. A glance at the rear reveals the powerful exhaust tailpipes on both sides that are so typical of the Audi S models. The Audi S4 Cabriolet runs on 18-inch cast aluminium wheels of S design with 235/40 R 18 tyres.

At the front, the sturdy body-colour bumper with large air inlets, the xenon plus headlights and the single-frame grille with the special S grid pattern are eye-catching elements. The exterior mirrors feature aluminium-look housings. The S4 models can be recognised from the side by sills in the same colour as the body, contrasting door trim strips and 18-inch cast aluminium wheels in the characteristic S design.

At the rear, four oval-shaped exhaust tailpipes indicate the engine’s potential. The saloon has a spoiler on the luggage compartment lid, the Avant has a roof spoiler and roof rails. The instrument cluster of the S4 has the S-specific grey dials. The inlays are in carbon fibre or optionally in piano finish, aluminium or grained birch. The S emblem is found in prominent places such as on the three-spoke leather sports steering wheel; if the vehicle is equipped with six-speed tiptronic, two shift paddles will be mounted on the steering wheel.

An on-board computer and an anti-theft alarm are standard. Electrically adjustable Recaro sports seats – sports seats in the Cabriolet – provide firm lateral support and excellent comfort on long journeys. The Audi S4 Cabriolet comes with the electro-hydraulic acoustic hood as standard. It opens fully automatically at the touch of a button in 21 seconds, even when the vehicle is moving at speeds of up to 30 km/h. The use of new fabrics with a higher material density for the front seats means that noise levels are on a par with those of the A4 saloon.

The body of the open-top Audi S4 has been strengthened compared with the saloon in all the vital areas – the A-posts, sills, doors, the floor under the rear seat bench and rear panel. The side airbags now also afford protection for the head. Should the vehicle roll over, two protective bars extend behind the rear seats.

The front end shows visible evidence of the new generation of the S4 Cabriolet. Like the S4 sedan, the Cabriolet features the S-specific grid pattern in the single-frame grille. The bumpers with large air inlets, the aluminium-look casings for the exterior mirrors, the redesigned rear lights, the V8 badges on the front fenders, and the four oval tailpipes are the distinguishing visual features of the S4 Cabriolet.

Taut lines and clear surfaces that hold no secrets, coupled with a tensionpacked shoulder line extending along the entire length of the body, produce a look that is simultaneously powerful and elegant. The rear end is distinguished by newly designed lights of clear-glass appearance which also emphasize the Cabriolet’s premium quality from behind. The new rear diffuser underscores the car’s sports character.

The modern and innovatively designed interior fits in with the progressive look of the car’s exterior styling. The new-generation steering wheels provide an entirely new visual touch inside the A4/S4 Cabriolet. Their characteristic element is the airbag cover with its single-frame design. Door sill trims with aluminum inserts and numerous aluminum inlays are a standard feature of all new A4 and S4 Cabriolet versions.

Inside, the S4 Cabriolet differs in appearance from its A4 brothers. The instrument cluster has the grey dials that are characteristic of S models and special needles. Power adjustable sports seats with leather upholstery further differentiate the S4 Cabriolet.

Inlays in Walnut or Fine grain birch wood grey can be ordered. These are attributes that also emphasize the special exclusiveness and elegance of the interior of current A4 models.

Almost all convertibles look good with the top down, but only a few are equally as attractive with the top up. The Audi A4 Cabriolet cuts an extremely fine figure both open and closed. Thanks to its good thermal insulation and glass rear window, the Audi A4/S4 Cabriolet can also be used without restriction in the winter.

As an option Audi also offers an acoustic roof, which goes even further in the direction of insulation. By using new fabrics with a greater material density, the noise level inside the cabin is reduced further, virtually matching that of the A4 sedan, even at highway speeds. This new acoustic top is standard fare on the S4 Cabriolet.

Engines

Audi is now also offering two highly modern engines with FSI gasoline direct injection for the new A4 Cabriolet: the 3.2 FSI V6 and the two-liter four-cylinder 2.0 TFSI. These combine high performance with a spontaneous response to every movement of the accelerator pedal and a peak-torque range at a high level.

The 3.2 FSI V6 produces 255 hp at 6500 rpm, and 243 ft.-lbs. of torque at 3250 rpm. About 90 percent of the engines peak torque is available from 1900- 5900 rpm, allowing for strong acceleration in any gear, at any speed. The 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder was the first engine to combine turbo charging and direct gasoline injection when it was initially launched. Producing 200 hp from 5100-6000 rpm, and 207 ft.-lbs. of torque between 1800-5000 rpm, the 2.0 TFSI is a marvel of power and efficiency.

The 4.2-litre V8 musters up 254 kW/344 bhp and a torque of 410 Nm, available at 3,500 rpm. Its elaborate design features two five-valve cylinder heads, adjustable intake camshafts and two-stage variable intake manifold. The long-stroke unit is compact – the chain drive for the camshafts is positioned at the rear to save space.

The driving experience – a combination of spontaneous response, free-revving characteristics and powerful torque – is impressive in every situation.

This is accompanied by the characteristic V8 sound, restrained and refined at low engine speeds but with a sonorous bass under load that indicates the full potential of the power plant. The V8’s thrust enables the Audi S4 with manual 6-speed gearbox to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in only 5.6 seconds.

It takes just 20.6 seconds to reach 200 km/h, whilst its top speed is electronically governed to 250 km/h. The S4 is available with a choice of manual gearbox or 6-speed tiptronic with dynamic shift program DSP and additional Sport program. With its optimised gear-shifting strategy and rapid gear shifts it has been specifically designed to meet demanding handling requirements. All versions of the Audi S4 with a manual gearbox feature quattro permanent four-wheel drive with the latest version of the self-locking centre differential.

Its standard torque split between the front and rear wheels is 40:60 – this bias towards the rear achieves even greater agility. The tiptronic transmissions are combined with a quattro version that delivers power evenly to both axles in normal driving situations.

All the engines have been named to the Ward’s 10 Best Engines list in the last two years, a further testament to their advanced design and abilities. These three engines deliver their power to the road either via the front wheels or by means of quattro permanent four-wheel drive. Customers can choose from a continuously variable Multitronic transmission (2.0 TFSI FrontTrak), a six-speed manual with a 40:60 front to rear torque split (S4), and a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission (standard 2.0TFSI quattro and 3.2, option on
S4).

The chassis

The S sports suspension comprising lightweight aluminium components is based on the much-praised axle design of the A4 series and provides the ideal basis for maximum agility as well as excellent suitability for everyday use.

Four-link front suspension and trapezoidal-link rear suspension enable maximum steering precision and clearly defined handling with excellent cornering stability. The emphasis is also on ride comfort as low unsprung masses permit a particularly sensitive response from the suspension.

The body has been lowered by 20 mm, the steering – speed-dependent servotronic – has a particularly direct ratio. The Audi S4 is equipped as standard with specially manufactured 18-inch cast aluminium wheels of S design. The brake system is matched to the power of the engine.

The ventilated discs are 345 mm in diameter at the front and 300 mm at the rear, the black callipers at the front bear S4 emblems. A dual-rate servo assists the driver during hard braking manoeuvres by increasing the servo rate.

The set-up of the dynamic suspension system, with four-link front and selftracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension, has been completely modified and numerous new components added. Audi’s chassis engineers have made extensive changes in the area of elastokinematics, and to the spring and shock absorber settings.

The steering has been completely modified to give the driver greater precision, but also better feedback from the road when cruising. In connection with this, the engineers adopted several mountings and the dimensions of the front and rear shock absorbers from the Audi A6; the rear trapezoidal links and the front track rods originate from the S4 sedan.

These modifications add up to a significantly higher level of agility and precise handling, combined with first-class ride comfort – all qualities which benefit drivers of the Audi A4 Cabriolet. This also applies to the brakes, the dimension and consequently performance of which have been adapted to suit the potential of the new engines.

Essentially, everything that makes the new A4 Cabriolet stop, turn, and go, has been revised to improve the sporting dynamics of the vehicle.

The quattro driveline: driving fun and ample traction

The new Audi S4 Cabriolet has quattro permanent four-wheel drive as a standard feature. It can therefore translate engine power into optimal progress in any conditions and exploit the dynamic potential of its aluminium chassis with a new degree of supremacy. In other words: driving pleasure in the purest sense.

Even in the early planning stages, Audi's body developers worked systematically on the structure of the body and simulated its reaction to movements of the suspension and the mechanical assemblies.

The result of this development process is that no unpleasant levels of either high- or low-frequency vibration reach the passenger area on roads of any kind.

Even driving pleasure benefits from the body's high rigidity because the direct steering enables the S4 Cabriolet to be guided extremely accurately around corners. This is made possible by the special steering column connection that takes account of the vibrational behaviour that is specific to convertibles.

The steering column mounting has an additional support, with the module cross-member linked to the cross-beam below the windscreen - measures that are decisive in keeping vibration at the steering wheel down to the lowest possible level.

Measures designed to increase strength and rigidity also affect the choice of material grades and joining techniques. For instance, high-strength and ultra-high-strength panels account for more than fifty percent of the bodyshell's weight.

Optimised wall thickness in conjunction with improved-quality weld points help to boost the structural durability of the body significantly. The body is in addition reinforced by a rigidly bolted-on subframe at the front, with additional diagonal struts at the front and rear.

A high level of crash protection

The Audi S4 Cabriolet's A-posts are optimised in cross-section and contain high-strength reinforcing tubes - a most important safety feature if the car should roll over.

Sills with an optimised thickness and cross-section boost the occupant cell's strength and optimise occupant protection. High-strength tubes are also used in the seat structure, as a means of enhancing occupant safety in the event of a lateral collision.

The doors in particular have to be designed with safety in mind. In conjunction with structural reinforcements in the sills and a strengthening cross-member below the rear seat, special impact absorbing beams in the doors ensure a high standard of safety. Crash resistance, even in the side impact test against a post, is on the same excellent level as the S4 saloon.

At the car's rear end, the double rear panel improves the rigidity of the body.

Comprehensive safety

The comprehensive safety package contains seat belts with belt-force limiter and belt tensioner for all passengers, together with full-size front and side airbags. The side airbags integrated into the front seats are designed to protect the head and thorax.

If the car should roll over, an active roll-over protection system in the double rear bulkhead adds to the occupants' safety. In this case, two protective bars, controlled by sensors, are triggered behind the rear passengers within milliseconds. Together with the extremely rigid windscreen frame, they help to preserve survival space for all occupants if the car turns over.

The standard electronic stabilisation program ESP with hydraulic brake assist provides for maximum active safety.

More than mere weather protection: the hood

An electro-hydraulic hood, which closes at the touch of a button in under 30 seconds, is standard equipment on the Audi S4 Cabriolet. The button only needs to be pressed once to either open or close the soft top. The side windows move down and up again to aid the process, and in the Audi S4 Cabriolet there is no locking handle to be released manually or tonneau cover to be detached.

A lever in the boot raises or lowers the hood compartment, so that a much larger luggage space becomes available when the hood is closed.

A heated, scratchproof glass window is just one of the reasons why the Cabriolet's lined hood is entirely suitable for winter driving. It has three layers of cloth and is sewn to high standards of accuracy to ensure maximum occupant protection, resist climatic effects and provide a standard of acoustic insulation worthy of a premium car such as this.

The hood's linkage is barely visible when the hood is in the raised position; the tautness of the hood and the cushioning prevent any "tent ridge" effect. The shape of the roof as a harmonious component of the Cabriolet design is thus preserved at all speeds.

The hood is also completely smooth on the inside. Together with the high-quality appearance of the surface, this look underlines the luxurious overall impression conveyed by the interior ambience.

Equipment and trim

The Audi S4 Cabriolet offer a standard equipment list that sets a benchmark in the midsize class. Every new S4 Cabriolet, for example, comes with a power retractable roof and dual-zone automatic climate control, ten-speaker audio system with in-dash six-disk CD changer and MP3 compatibility, power onetouch windows, driver information display, cruise control, large ski sack, highpressure headlight washer system, and numerous other features you’d expect to find in a luxury convertible.

All S4 Cabriolet models can be equipped with an optional S line package consisting of five-spoke 18” alloy wheels designed by quattro GmbH with performance or all-season tires, sport suspension, S line front and rear bumpers, and brushed aluminum interior trim.

The S4 Cabriolets can be equipped with an Audio package with a Bose premium sound system and Sirius satellite radio, and a Convienence package including Homelink, auto-dimming exterior and interior mirrors, light/rain sensor for automatic wipers and headlights, Bi-Xenon headlights with adaptive technology, driver side memory for seat and mirrors, heated front seats, and acoustic convertible top (on 3.2 models only, standard on S4).

Other stand alone options on the S4 Cabriolet consist of luxury items like heated front seats, Audi Navigation Plus, and Bluetooth phone preparation.

The Audi A4/S4 Cabriolet’s A-pillars are reinforced very effectively by means of high-strength tubes and their optimized structure – an indispensable source of extra safety if the car should roll over.

Sills with an optimized thickness and cross-section boost the occupant cell's strength and occupant protection. High-strength tubes are also used in the seat structure, as a means of protecting the occupants in the event of a lateral collision.

The doors in particular have to be designed with safety in mind. In conjunction with structural reinforcements in the sills and a strengthening crossmembers below the rear seat, special impact absorbing beams in the doors help ensure a high standard of safety. At the back of the car, the double rear panel improves the rigidity of the body.

The comprehensive safety package contains seat belts with belt-force limiter and belt tensioner for all passengers, together with full-size front and side airbags. The side airbags integrated into the front seats are designed to protect the head and thorax.

If the car should roll over, a roll-over protection system in the double rear bulkhead adds to the occupants' safety. In this case, two protective bars, controlled by sensors, are triggered behind the rear passengers within milliseconds. Together with the extremely rigid windscreen frame, they help to preserve survival space for all occupants if the car turns over.

The standard electronic stabilization program ESP 8.0 with hydraulic brake assist provides for maximum active safety.

All seats are equipped with three-point inertia-reel belts (the front belts have belt-force limiters and belt tensioners, plus a seat belt reminder for the driver) and head restraints. The safety equipment specification also includes a driver’s airbag activated in two stages and side airbags.
