The SUV segment has known a constant success even since its debut. Currently many sub-segments are emerging, one of the latest being the compact SUV. By 2010 most of the important producers will be featuring such a model. As shown to us by the recently presented Cross Coupe concept, Audi has such a project going on, and logically it should be launched in the next three years and marketed as the Q3.
A very good preview, for the next Audi sports SUV is the concept Cross Coupe. Where previously concepts on this theme, like the Steppenwolf were far from a production version, the Cross Coupe looks pretty much market ready. The design is a lot more conventional and it can be easily assimilated to the rest of the Audi range.
As the Cross Coupe is based on the current Audi A3 (which is mostly a VW Golf V) it is expected that the production version of the Q3 will share its platform with the Volkswagen Golf VI. Many components will be therefore borrowed from the “organ donor”, such as the DSG dual-clutch transmission or the highly appreciated 2.0l TFSI engine. Also expected are a 3.0 V6 turbo diesel with over 200 bhp and a 3.6l V6 FSI with 300 bhp for the top of the range, Q3S.
The Q3 will be build on Audi’s new MLP (Modular Longitudinal Platform) platform, the same platform which will be a feature of future A4, A5 & A6 and A8 models.
As the rest of the vehicles based on the Golf VI, the Q3 will be offered in both FWD & AWD. Gadgets such as height-adjustable suspension, lockable differentials or low-range gearing will not be available for the Q3, due to cost reduction measures. Such technologies will remain only for the more expensive Audis Q5 and Q3.

When the new Q3 will go on sale in 2009, it will be a strong competitor for the Land Rover Freelander, BMW X3 and Volkswagen Tiguan. The Q3 will go on sale at a price of 27500 euro (the price from Germany, arround $37000), meaning 5000 euro less than the BMW X3.
At the Shanghai Motor Show Audi unveiled a study that defines a new segment in the field of crossover vehicles. The Audi Cross Coupé quattro combines the design and dynamism of a compact premium sports car with the spaciousness and versatility of a four-seat sport utility vehicle (SUV). Innovative technical solutions show new ways of achieving efficiency, driving pleasure and comfort in a manner that is typical of Audi. The Audi Cross Coupé quattro: a car whose visual appearance clearly tells you what it is capable of and whose engineering matches this standard – on all roads, under all conditions.
The transversely installed four-cylinder inline TDI engine with common-rail fuel injection and piezo injectors is a completely new development. With power output of 204 bhp and 400 Nm of torque, it gives the vehicle a sporty performance and a surprising degree of efficiency. On average the ultra-modern 2.0 TDI needs just 5.9 litres of diesel per 100 km. The diesel particulate filter and Bluetec system reduce soot and nitric oxide emissions effectively. Even today, the Audi Cross Coupé quattro satisfies the emissions standards of the future.
The quattro permanent four-wheel drive system is a matter of course on an Audi with offroad potential. A Haldex clutch ensures that traction is precisely distributed according to the situation. The sporty Audi S tronic dual-clutch gearbox executes gearshifts in a matter of milliseconds.
Numerous electronic systems support the driver. The Audi drive select system makes it possible to preselect three highly individual configurations for the engine, gearbox, steering and adaptive shock absorbers. The result: a car that can be enjoyed in three completely different ways.
Besides the standard "dynamic" drive select mode and the "sport" setting, the Audi Cross Coupé also has the "efficiency" driving program. Here, the engine map and the shift points are modified to support a particularly economical driving style. In addition, the system deactivates components that are particularly energy-hungry, for example the air-conditioning compressor.
Another innovation is the MMI control panel, which is operated by a touch pad. The monitor of the system employs, for the first time, dual-view technology. The system can produce different images for the driver and front-seat passenger. These images are only visible when viewed from a specific angle. This allows the driver to read data from the on-board computer while the front passenger watches a TV programme, listening to the sound through headphones. -----
The all-new Land Rover Freelander 2 redefines the compact premium 4x4 class. Freelander 2 is Land Rover’s fourth all-new vehicle in just over four years, and follows the new Range Rover (2002), Discovery 3 (2004) and Range Rover Sport (2005). Their highly successful introductions contributed to record Land Rover sales worldwide in 2005. Technical highlights of the Freelander 2 include two brand-new engines: a 3.2-litre straight-six petrol and a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel. Both feature advanced technologies to deliver outstanding combinations of performance and economy.
The 233 PS (171 kW) i6 petrol engine provides a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h) and 0-60 mph acceleration in 8.4 seconds (0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds). Combined fuel economy is 25.2 mpg (11.2 litres/100 km). The engine is matched to a new six-speed automatic transmission, with Land Rover’s CommandShift™ offering manual sequential gear changes when required. There is also a driver-selectable sport mode, for livelier performance.
The diesel engine chosen for Freelander 2 is an all-new 2.2-litre four-cylinder. The 160 PS (118 kW) unit delivers peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb ft), with over 200 Nm (148 lb ft) of torque from 1000 rpm all the way to 4500 rpm. The engine is easy and responsive to drive, as well as highly refined and economical, with a combined average fuel consumption of 37.7 mpg (7.5 l/100 km). An optional catalysed Diesel Particulate Filter (cDPF) is also available for even cleaner performance. Two transmissions are offered: a new six-speed manual gearbox and the same six-speed automatic used on the petrol engine (diesel auto available from Spring 2007).
The new version of the successful premium SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) with modified exterior design symbolises the increase in agility and dynamics with the latest, even more powerful and, at the same time, more efficient drive systems; new headlight and rear light optics as well as generously-sized bumper units painted in the vehicle colour underline the striking, dynamic appearance and the premium character; high quality ambience in the interior; wide-ranging redesign of the instrument panel, steering wheel, centre console, seats, door upholstery, storage compartments and roof lining; wide variety of colours, upholstery materials and decorative elements facilitate a high degree of customisation.
The sportiest diesel worldwide is available as the top-of-the-range engine for the new BMW X3. The newly developed 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder unit of the BMW X3 3.0sd with its Variable Twin Turbo (VTT) technology realises 210 kW/286 HP and reaches a maximum torque of 580 Newton metres. The new generation of in-line six-cylinder petrol engines with 3.0-litre and 2.5-litre capacity is also deployed in the new BMW X3. The VALVETRONIC and Bi-VANOS drive units fitted with a magnesium-aluminium composite crankcase achieve 200 kW/272 HP or 160 kW/218 HP, respectively. The Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) with optimised computer structure ensures an even more effective and rapid interaction of the intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive from BMW with the driving dynamic control DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and the engine control system in all variants of the engine.
Three petrol engines and three diesel engines are available for the new BMW X3. Greater performance, higher torque, reduced weight and improved efficiency distinguish the new six-cylinder unit. High tech of the very best kind is also offered by the second six-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW X3 3.0d. In addition, the new generation of the in-line six-cylinder petrol engines with magnesium-aluminium composite crankcase and VALVETRONIC is now also making its arrival in the BMW X3.
The unrivalled breadth of the usable speed range leads to a sustained strong power output development that is also reflected in the road performances of the new BMW X3 3.0sd. 6.6 seconds are enough for the vehicle to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h with a top speed of 240 km/h. Yet the impressive dynamics are combined with maximum economy. The average fuel consumption determined in the extra urban (EU) test cycle is 8.7 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. Effective exhaust cleaning is provided by a particle filter of the latest generation, which is integrated with the oxidation catalytic converter in a shared housing near the engine. Like all other vehicle models, the BMW X3 3.0sd also complies with the emission guidelines of the EU-4 norm.
Due to the expansion of the compact SUV class Volkswagen have decided to build their own version based on the new PL/PQ48 platform. The new SUV will be called “Tiguan” and is intended to suit both an urban environment as well as a rough terrain far from normal roads. The first clues about the new Volkswagen SUV were provided by the off-road design study Concept A at the beginning of 2006. Our artists have produced a couple of renderings to give a better impression on how the production car will look like.
The new VW Tiguan will transfer the globally successful Touareg recipe to the class of the compact SUV, a segment that has grown considerably lately. The new exotic sounding name came to serve the adventure, enjoyment and freedom the new car will have to offer. Thanks to the SUV concept which is based on driving dynamics and high comfort levels, the Tiguan will suit both an urban environments as well as rough terrain far from normal roads and thus provides the driver with absolute freedom. A first impression of the new Volkswagen SUV was provided by the off-road design study Concept A at the beginning of 2006.
The Volkswagen Tiguan is expected to be available with four gasoline and diesel engines at start. The 97 cui FSI, 122 cui FSI, 115 cui TDI and 122 cui TDI will be borrowed from the Golf/Rabbit V. The top model will equip either the 2.8 V6 or the Golf/Rabbit GTI’s 2.0 FSI Turbo with 200 bhp. DSG sequential dual clutch gearbox will also be available as an option. The four-wheel drive system will be the already known 4Motion equipping all 4WD Volkswagen s. A higher suspension of 2.5 inch will allow the Tiguan to tackle off-road conditions better than the conventional Golf/Rabbit 4Motion.
