German auto design house PPI launched its new company name and a new Audi R8 -based Razor Spyder GTR model this weekend at Pebble Beach Concours week. PPI is now called PPI Speed Design , and to go with the new name is this hot open-air conversion kit for both the V-8 and V-10 R8 supercars.
Marked out by freer breathing for the induction and exhaust, the most notable element of the Razor Spyder is the open-air door cutouts that make every day a breezy California summer.
Cut from aluminum and reinforced with carbon fiber, the door cutouts promise a spectacular view of the road and create a cockpit that feels open and free like a track day special or the Aston Martin CC100 speedster. Lacking weatherproofing (or side windows) to provide these interesting cockpit vents, the PPI “Spyder Doors” take the R8 V-10 Spyder ’s drama level and performance level - then cranks it up to "11."
The full complement of PPI Speed Design carbon-fiber styling and aerodynamic tweaks are included on the prototype seen above, which also features a custom satin matte blue paint and contrast black features for the side air ducts and a giant dual intake scoop behind the passenger headrests.
The result is certainly dramatic in a way that most modified R8’s are not, with giant virgin gold painted brake calipers and a GT3-inspired front air dam looking amazing with the latest LED headlights from the latest R8 Audi design.

2013 PPI Speed Design Razor Spyder GTR in Detail
A deep aluminum chin spoiler sets off the changes to the racing-inspired bumper treatment up front. Aero spats appear in the corners in a contrast carbon-fiber finish that matches the reverse hood vent. This vent creates more of a vacuum to force even more air past the canted front radiators.
PPI “Spyder Doors” for Audi R8 V-10 and V-8
The Razor GTR’s “Spyder Doors” are only part of a comprehensive makeover package for the R8 that leaves almost no panel unaltered. In profile, the PPI Speed Design Razor Spyder looks far tougher and more track-focused than any other R8 Spyder.
Hugely flared fenders front and rear are highlighted by the free-standing front fender vent and a pair of painted sills so wide they almost look like an SUV’s running boards. The design limits air from under the body escaping during max attack runs - where the Spyder GTR is certified to hit 208 mph.
The revamp for the Spyder involves much more action around the back deck, where the PPI Speed Design model is barely recognizable as an R8 from some rear angles. The giant air scoops vaguely recall the Porsche 911 Speedster’s tonneau cover bulges, but in this case they act more like high-mounted air scoops.
Pulling clean air from the roof is the best location for ram-air intake effects at super-high speeds. There is no mention of an integrated roll-bar in these giant hoop scoops, and these giant snorkels seem like they might be able to suck the sunglasses right off your face.
It’s worth it for the open cone intakes and overrun pops from the 5.2-liter V-10 engine — or the V-8. Top speed and performance are both up significantly with this upgrade for the V-10, with performance gains from the V-8 generally even more impressive.

PPI Speed Design GmbH (i.G.), announces their new Supercar, the PPI RAZOR
SPYDER GTR (based on the Audi V10 Spyder) and SPYDER GT (based on the
Audi V8 Spyder). The car is a complete re-imagined open air version of the existing
PPI Razor GT and GTR coupe already in production.
Performance and Handling
The result, after extensive modification, is a normally aspirated V10 engine with over
621 hp (463 kW). at 7,400 rpm, and a maximum torque of 565 Nm at 6,400 rpm at its
disposal. This leaves it with the ability to achieve speeds from 0 to 100 km/h in a
mere 3.2 seconds and a maximum top speed of 335 km/h. To achieve this PPI,
together with our technology partners carefully remapped the ecu management and
exhaust system – insuring that optimum power delivery is achieved while maintaining
fuel efficiency, emissions standards, and reliability.
Lightweight, forged wheels, and PPI developed (signature orange) braking system as
well as PPI track-engineered suspension systems, insure that you will not only
outperform other vehicles in this category, but give you the tools to maintain complete
control – even when compared to stock power settings from the OEM.
In addition to the excellent driving performance, this supercar also has a striking
widebody appearance with elaborate, wind tunnel tested aerodynamics. Special
attention was paid to the reduction of the vehicle’s weight, which was achieved by
PPI’s extensive use of the high-strength formula 1 and aerospace-proven Carbon
Fibre technology. All parts are made of this high-tech material, reducing weight and
adding strength in the process.
Special “PPI Spyder” doors were designed to provide the ultimate in open-air driving.
These aerodynamically tested, aluminum-reinforced carbon fiber doors feature an
open air-exposed feel even with the top up (covered).
PPI developed aerodynamic carbon fiber mirrors with integrated LED indicator lights
and electronically adjustable mirrors for greater sport, visual appeal, functionality and
Or particular importance, are the specialized air channels and exhaust area vents –
designed to improve maximum cooling to the engine, and maintain a negative
pressure exhaust vacuum to pull hot air out of the engine bay. These, combined with
the PPI exclusive attention to detail give an overall wider stance, and stunning appeal
of this true superexotic sports car.
PPI completely redesigns the interior and gives the original Audi R8 Spyder are more
technical and stylish interior. Through extensive use of carbon fiber – original plastic
parts are replaced with high quality and more optically appealing (as well as lighter
weight) mixed interior trim. Carbon Fiber seats have integrated side air bags and
feature heat and air ventilation throughout that allows the occupants to be warm even
while driving with the top down.
The GT and GTR spyder features a painted center “tunnel” and painted door arm
rests. This gives the car a more unified visual appearance with the external body.
PPI developed racing-style steering wheel, offer comfort, sportiness, and exclusivity.
In addition, the Spyder GTR steering wheel features a centrally mounted red-line
indicator which only lights up to warn the driver when maximum engine revolutions is
achieved. Otherwise, this indicator light looks like a “design element” of the steering
Other distinctive features are a recessed backlit logo, various identity markings, and
trunk mounted umbrella holders with PPI Speed Design modified umbrellas. In
addition, this car features a custom carbon fiber and leather luggage set.
PPI Speed Design GmbH developed a special matte paint for this car, called “PPI
ICE Blue Kyanite” ® The paint is a 2 tone paint, with patent-pending application
process which creates an illusion that there is a light glowing inside this silver / blue
Embedded in the carbon fiber are reflective elements that highlight the curves of the
car, in addition to acting as “safety reflectors” at night.
LED strips are integrated into the custom side skirts – providing strips of light on the
floor (instead of the typical 1 or 2 beam “puddle” lights) – for safer entry and exit.
The PPI exhaust system features a 4 – valve system which can be overridden to put
the car into quiet mode, or opened all up to place it in “race” mode.
