We understand all too well that companies tend to change things up just for the sake of change in some cases. We see it every year in the automotive world. Fortunately, in our world, this typically doesn’t affect you all too much if you had a car just before a drastic and utterly meaningless upgrade occurred. You just keep on motoring.

Well, when it comes to some electronics, these changes can spell disaster if you are not well informed and prepared. Case in point is the new iPhone 5, which iFolk are iTrading their iPhone 4s like iHotcakes to get their iHands on, but there is a problem that they may run into when trying to dock up their flashy new iPhone 5 to their iPhone-ready car… The new “Lightning” interface connector will not connect, even if you just snagged up a 2013 model year.

The only way to rectify this issue is to go to the store and pick up $29 (Apple licensed) adapters for your car and the other numerous doo-dads that you hook it up to. Additionally, for those that have ever tried using cellphone adapters of any sort, please think of the last one you bought – licensed or not – that actually worked the way it was supposed to. Not too often, huh?

So this may, create a small tizzy in the automotive industry, as owners may take to the dealerships up in arms as to why the car companies had no idea that the iPhone 5 would not fit their massive 30-pin receptacle. This could result in automakers like Kia , Hyundai , Audi , and VW , all of which have the old-style iPhone connector, having to offer all of its new-car buyers these adapters – possibly free of charge to avoid legal issues.

This just shows how something as little as a change in the connector for seemingly no reason at all can lead to serious headaches for your customers. Apple really should have included the adapter with the iPhone 5 and very well may decide to retroactively do so in the future, if the issue becomes too big.

At the 2012 Paris Motor Show, Audi will be bringing along a special edition SQ5 TDI model called the Executive Concept.

To be fair, we’re looking forward to seeing this car on the showroom floor for a number of reasons including a unique body color that we haven’t seen before from an Audi. The concept also promises a luxurious interior befitting its "Exclusive Concept" designation.

Other than that, there’s not a whole lot to be excited about when it comes to the SQ TDI Exclusive Concept. (Wait until you hear how much it’s going to cost).

In any case, the car is scheduled to make an appearance in Paris, which, in itself, is worthy of coverage. It won’t be the sexiest or the most eye-popping of the cars headed to France, but we’re still interested to see if Audi can change our minds on our initial underwhelming opinion of this production-ready, limited-run concept.

Leave it to ABT Sportsline to come up with a tuning program for the Audi A6 that fans of the four rings will appreciate.

The German tuner always brings their game when it comes to programs for Audi and this one is no different. It features a slew of aerodynamic and performance improvements that not only add vibrancy to the elegance of the new A6 , but also provide added power that’s bound to get noticed.

Looking at the components, ABT Sportsline gave the now rechristened AS6 with a number of new parts, including a new front spoiler, side skirts, a rear spoiler, and a rear skirt set that comes with tailpipe exhaust tips. The program also comes with a new set of 19" to 21" ABT light alloy wheels

On its own, the A6 carries a number of engines under its hood, each of which ABT Sportsline has performance modifications for. Talk about thorough, right? The flagship 3.0-liter TDI model was given ABT Power to the tune of 270 horsepower, an increase from the standard 204-horsepower output of the regular model. If that isn’t enough, ABT also has what it calls "New Generation" enhancement, which increases the output from either 245 or 313 horsepower to 300 or 360 horsepower, respectively.

Meanwhile, the most powerful engine version of the line-up, the 3.0-liter TFSI, sees its output bump from 300 horsepower to 420 horsepower. Finally, the entry level 2.0-liter TDI wasn’t left out in the cold, getting 205 horsepower from the standard model’s 170-horsepower output.

Kahn Design is adding another snazzy tuning package to its lineup with the inclusion of modified Audi Q7 3.0 Diesel S-Line . The new Wide Body package includes some an extensive amount of exterior and interior updates, and can be yours for £61,875, or about $98,600 at the current exchange rates.

The exterior of the Audi glistens with a Glacier pearl white finish and aerodynamic modifications, including new front bumper arches, front bumper replacement wings with air vents, matte pearl grey front grille and bumper sections, a matte black rear diffuser, a large rear upper wing roof, a rear vented bumper, and stainless steel door entry sill plates. The headlamps feature LED daytime running lights, while the doors are equipped with privacy tinted glass. The SUV can be ordered with a new set of 22" Kahn RS-R wheels combined with brake calipers finished in liquid gold and an electronic lowering module. For the interior, the tuner added a red and white speedo & rev counter fascia and machined aluminum vented foot pedals. As always, additional interior modifications can be made per the customer’s request.

The Audi Q7 Quattro 3.0 Diesel S-Line by A. Kahn Design is powered by a 3.0-liter TDI diesel engine that delivers a total of 233 HP and sprints the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.4 seconds.

After testing it for quite some time now, Audi will be unveiling the new RS5 Cabrio at the end of September at the Paris Auto Show, but the first details on the car will be dropped on September 6th.

Just like with the coupe version , the RS5 Cabrio will be powered by a 4.2 liter V8 engine with an output of 450 HP and a peak torque of 317.15 lb-ft available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. The engine will be combined with Audi’s seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission and quattro all-wheel drive system. This powerful engine will be combined with an improved suspension, more powerful brakes and a revised steering system.

Audi A8

Every model in Audi’s lineup is currently getting a facelift version, including the Audi A8 (pictured here), which is also getting a power boost for the V8 TDI engine sometime in early 2013. The changes for the model will be minimal, however, until Audi releases the new generation A8 sometime in 2016-2017.

The next-gen Audi A8 is expected to offer significant changes, including the removal of the current all-aluminum body and the addition of a new "aluminum hybrid" version which will combine high-strength steel and composite materials. It is also very possible that the next A8 will use the company’s future modular standard architecture that will also be used for the next generation Porsche Panamera and the future Bentley sedans. Rumors say that the next A8 could also be Audi’s first model to use a rear-wheel-drive platform.

Over the past three years, we’ve heard a great deal about Shelley , the autonomous Audi TT-S that was being co-developed between Stanford’s Dynamic Design Lab and the Volkswagen Electronics Research Lab.

Development for Shelley began back in 2009 and since then, the car has been blazing its trails, including its successful run up Pikes Peak in 2010.

Recently, Shelley was back in the hands of Stanford mechanical engineering Associate Professor Chris Gerdes who brought the car to the Thunderhill tracks for the latest round of high-speed tests and software upgrades. These new digs now instruct her when to brake, how tight to take turns, and when to punch the gas. Better yet, Shelley was able to complete the Thunderhill lap in under two and a half minutes, which isn’t stunningly fast, but otherwise impressive for a machine. Shelley is even getting close to the times achieved by actual human, professional drivers.

The testing is still far from completed and Shelley seems to gain new and more important layers in its quest to become one of the first fully autonomous cars. One particular sticking point that has yet to find a solution is the problem of getting a spinning wheel to grip the pavement akin to how it can recover from a slide on a patch of ice.

Criminals are all too often not the brightest bulbs in the pack and this usually results in them using something like a 1989 Dodge Shadow as their getaway car. Well, not to compliment a robber, but this UK thief took planning to a whole new level and stole himself a real getaway ride, a 450-horsepower Audi RS5 .

After his 16th robbery of a UK business, he took off in the RS5 and the police could hardly keep up – seeing the cars they drive, it is no surprise. The dude even outran a helicopter. It wasn’t until he decided to make a stopover at a local apartment complex that he was tracked down and busted.

The police estimated that he was doing upwards of 180 mph during the chase and by the looks of the helicopter camera, his tires gave way at some point and he was shooting sparks from the rims – a tribute to that wonderful Quattro AWD system, if I may add.

In all, this 65-mile run from the cops in a stolen Audi beast – and the multiple robberies – landed this thief in jail for nine years. A rather light sentence for all of those crimes and an extremely fast police chase. We guess they do things a little differently in the UK.

Anyways, check out the above video to see all of the craziness. You’ll notice that the cameras are pretty choppy in the beginning, but the chase section is nice and smooth.


The 2010 Paris Auto Show brought us many concepts, but while the Lotus five-year plan has since fizzled to nothing and the Renault Dezir is only planned to be chopped up and used for inspirational parts, Audi is pushing forward with a production version of the Quattro concept . That’s right, the Quattro has been given the green light for limited production which should be ready for the 2015 model year.

The production Quattro will be based on Audi’s latest aluminum spaceframe chassis with a body built in carbon fiber-reinforced plastic. It will weigh in at about 660 lbs less than the RS5 as seen on the prototypes already testing. It will also feature a wheelbase that has been reduced by 150 mm and an interior featuring seats made from forged composites.

We don’t know exactly what will be used under the hood of the sports car, but the concept version is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder attached to a classic six-speed gearbox. The engine delivers a total of 402 HP and 354 pound-feet of torque. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph is made in just 3.9 seconds, while top speed is of course limited to 155 mph. Hopefully we will see either this configuration or something a bit more powerful on the production Quattro.

UPDATE 08/24/2012: Sources have told AutoBild that the future Audi Quattro Coupe (internally known as the Q35) will only feature small bits of inspiration from the Quattro Concept displayed at the 2011 Paris Auto Show. Other than that, the four-seater, two door sports car will have short overhangs, a flat roof, LED headlights and taillights, 20" wheels, and some hood-mounted air vents inspired by the original Quattro. In terms of power, the Quattro will feature a supercharged 2.5L five-cylinder engine mated to a dual clutch S-tronic transmission. This engine will produce 380 HP and send the Quattro from 0-62 mph in a little over four seconds.

AutoBild is predicting that the Audi Quattro will debut in March 2013 to coincide with the original Quattro’s 35th anniversary, hence the internal Q35 designation. It will be priced somewhere between the Audi TT and the Audi R8, which will fill in the gap nicely with the $38,650 and $114,200 price tags of the aforementioned models.

When German luxury meets German aftermarket prowess, the result is a car that speaks both to the consumer’s want for elegance and need for blaze-setting speed.

ABT Sportsline knows a thing or two about satisfying its consumer’s tastes, and their new program for the Audi S8 is the epitome of what people look for in a high-powered luxury limo with sports car capabilities.

“For us, the new AS8 is the best of both worlds, that is, the best in terms of both comfort and acceleration and agility“, said Hans-Jürgen Abt, managing director of ABT Sportsline.

“After all, the AS8 has to meet our premium customers’ standards when it comes to performance and luxuriousness.”

Make no mistake; the Audi S8 is a luxury car that’s got no shortage of performance credentials, thanks to its 4.0-liter TFSI engine that’s powered with 520 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. Thanks to ABT’s power upgrades, the AS8 was able to increase its output to 620 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. Here’s the clincher: ABT still has some fine-tweaking to do, which could still increase the output of the car by more than just 20%. We like that, indeed.

Nevertheless, the current increased output allows it to hit 0-62 mph in just four seconds. In fourth gear, it can hit 37 to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds while fifth gear can be hit in 3.5 seconds from 50 to 75 mph. Finally, the AS8 can also hit 0-124 mph in just 13 seconds with an overall top speed of 181 mph.
