Bentley Continental Flying Spur

  The Bentley Continental Flying Spur and Flying Spur Speed is a full size luxury four door sedan from the English automaker. Both models are powered by a 6.0L twin turbocharged W12 that is mated to a six-speed automatic, but the Flying Spur only gets 552hp and 479lb-ft of torque while the Flying Spur Speed gets 600 HP and 553 lb-ft of torque. These numbers help the Bentley accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in 4.8 seconds and reach a 200 MPH top speed making it the world's fastest four door saloon.

Bentley has always ranked among the upper echelon of luxury automakers with cars the epitomize wealth, success, and even perhaps over indulgence in excess. The same still holds true today, though Bentley may be looking into expanding its customer base with its latest introduction of the 2015 Flying Spur fitted with a V-8 where the massive W-12 normally lives and a rumored baby Bentley.

The V-8 Flying Spur is practically unchanged from its W-12 big brother , save for a handful of cosmetic bits that differentiates the two. Both versions will be on sale together, but prices for the V-8 will likely be considerably less. Why then is Bentley Bentley offering a less exclusive Flying Spur and pandering to a lesser wealthy crowd? Two reasons stick out: making the CAFÉ cut with improved fuel economy and attracting new customers. Granted, the V-8 Flying Spur will be no bargain at roughly $180 - $195,000, but the $20,000 savings over the W-12 does open up the Flying Spur to a few more folks. But will this be good for Bentley’s prestigious image?

Add to that the news that Bentley may be looking at releasing a £100,000 ($166,320) smaller car, and things are starting to get a little odd. Enthusiasts lost their minds when Porsche started releasing other models that fit different niches, though they still remained exclusive on the upper end. Never — save for the Boxster and Cayman — did Porsche cheapen its image, but this baby Bentley is a clear attempt to lower the price of admission to the Bentley brand to attract top-level Mercedes and BMW buyers.

Sure, driving a new S-Class is great, but driving a Bentley is a whole new ballgame that few ever experience.

Time has grown short in our wait for the 2014 Geneva Auto Show to begin in the little Swiss city of Geneva. The main media festivities are set to take place March 4th and 5th with the show remaining in full swing throughout the week for the general public. There will be plenty of new cars debuting for the first time along with numerous cars with minor updates.

While the actual list is incredibly long, we’ve compiled a condensed version of the main vehicles on display that are either new or show a significant update over their outgoing counterpart. As the event rolls on, we’ll be bringing you the brand new information straight from the automakers regarding their latest models. It is no surprise that like most other uber-luxury car companies, Bentley is not too keen on changes. It’s buyers like a certain thing and it makes sure to deliver the goods year in and year out, no surprises. Well, Bentley is making the oh-so-rare changeup this year at the Geneva Auto Show , as it will debut the Flying Spur V8 as a complement to the existing Flying Spur W12 .

The V-8 power found under the hood is no stranger to us, as we’ve seen this 4.0-liter in various Bentley models, including the Continental GT . The purpose here is obviously to improve upon the company’s current corporate fuel economy, as the V-8 powerplant adds 2 mpg city, 4 mpg highway and 2 mpg combined to the W-12 engine’s numbers.

Additionally, the new Flying Spur V8 will put the model more in reach to top-line Mercedes , BMW , Jaguar and Maserati buyers. Sure, it’ll still cost way more than models from those manufacturers, but it will give fringe buyers something to think about.

To be perfectly honest with you, the 2014 Bentley Flying Spur and the 2014 Rolls-Royce Ghost are not necessarily our favorite cars. We’re more interested in nimble sports car, as opposed to massive luxury cars that go fast in a straight line. But if we had to choose between one to have handed to us, we would definitely opt for the Bentley limousine, just because it looks a bit sportier that the Rolls .

This is just our opinions, and we’re sire that plenty of you would take the Ghost. Let’s have a look to see that the folks at Motor Trend think on the two models, and which one would they prefer, as they put the two models against one another in the latest episode of "Head 2 Head."

Be prepared for a slightly unconventional test, as the Motor Trend folks wanted to see if the two models could do a little painting, on top of the typical testing. Check out the video to see which model did best!

A luxury limousine needs no explanation. For many buyers, is the only type of car on the market they will consider. Transporting themselves, family members and business colleagues in comfort and luxury is the name of the game.

It is much more than comfort for these affluent clients, or we would see American businessmen lapping up the Chevy Impala or Toyota Avalon like they do stock options in a venture capital-backed, start-up company.

No, for these buyers - it is either a professionally-driven car service or it must be the something extremely luxurious and "on brand." In other words, something these fancy folks think matches their lifestyle, clothing, accessories, vacation spots and what-have-you.

The luxury sedans on this list start at about $65,000 and go way up from there. These limos need to be huge in the back seat, ruling out the BMW 5 Series , Mercedes E-Class and Audi A6 from contention.

So, let’s talk big. A back seat so roomy that you can read the full newspaper and cross your legs. For that, it will take the size of the Audi A7 at minimum, and up to the Rolls-Royce Ghost LWB at maximum.

Following the updates offered for the Continental GT and the Continental GTC models, Bentley is also offering an update for its Flying Spur model. Just like with the other models, the Flying Spur will receive both exterior and interior changes, while the engine only received some minor upgrades.

Just like with the other two Continental models, the Flying Spur will receive a tricked out exterior with a more aggressive front fascia, a vented hood, and new headlights. For the rear, the luxury full-size vehicle will get a new trunk-mounted spoiler, slimmer taillights, and a revised exhaust system. The interior will feature even more luxury, thanks to the addition of higher-quality materials and improved technologies.

The new Flying Spur will be about 110 pounds lighter than the previous model, and, according to Bentley it offers no less than 600 new parts.

Bentley is continuing to tease its upcoming Continental Flying Spur luxury sedan with a new teaser video called "Quietly Powerful." Even if very short, the new teaser video unveils a little bit more of the luxury sedan and, for the first time, you can get a good look at the headlamps. You just need to pay extra attention around the 20-second mark.

The new Continental Flying Spur will receive a more aggressive front fascia, a vented hood, and - as revealed - new headlights. For the rear, Bentley will add a new trunk-mounted spoiler, slimmer taillights, and a revised exhaust system. The interior will also be upgraded with higher-quality materials and improved technologies. No changes will be made under the hood though, where Bentley will keep the usual 6-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine rated at 575 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.

Full details on the new Continental Flying Spur will be unveiled on February 20, 2013.

The upcoming Bentley Continental Flying Spur has been caught testing at the famous Nurburgring race track once again, but this time, it looks like Bentley has opted to heavily camouflage the luxury sedan. The last time the Flying Spur was caught testing, it was free of cammo and revealed what everybody already knew of its changes, leaving the new disguise to be a bit irrelevant.

Hidden under this new cover-up should be a more aggressive front fascia, a vented hood, and new headlights, as well as a new trunk-mounted spoiler, slimmer taillights, and a revised exhaust system for the back end. Unless the camouflage is now hiding a surprise addition to the sedan, this should be all of the new exterior changes for the Flying Spur.

The standard Flying Spur will be offered with a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine rated at 575 HP and 516 lb/ft of torque, but just like all of the other Continental models, Bentley will also be offering it with a 4.0 liter, twin turbocharged V8 engine producing an output of 500 HP and 487 lb-ft of torque.

The official debut for the 2013 Bentley Continental Flying Spur will be made by the end of 2012.

In keeping up to speed with the Bentley Continental GT and GTC models, the future Continental Flying Spur will also be offered in both W12 and V8 versions. Just the other day, we were able to capture the first spy shots of the W12 version, and now it’s time to take a look at the V8-powered model.

These new spy shots lead us to believe this is the Continental Flying Spur V8 because the grey prototype is equipped with a different set of exhaust pipes, similar to the ones we have seen on the GT and GTC V8 models . Those exhaust pipes should lead us to the same 4.0 liter, twin turbocharged V8 engine as in the coupe and convertible models. This engine will deliver a total of 500 HP at 6000 rpm and 487 lb-ft of torque available between 1700 to 5000 rpm. We expect the sedan version to be a bit slower than the coupe, so the 0 to 60 mph will be made in about 5 seconds, while top speed will be below 180 mph.

Expect to see the new Bentley Continental Flying Spur V8 launched sometime in 2013.

Bentley Continental Flying Spur

After offering updates for the Continental GT and the Continental GTC , Bentley has switched focus over to the Continental Flying Spur to provide it with some similar upgrades.

While most people will consider this a facelift, Bentley says the changes provided to the Flying Spur will make it a new model - just like the Continental GT. We have to admit, the changes are significant enough to justify the title. They include more upright bumpers with a new shape, new headlights with LED lights, and redesigned side mirrors. The chrome stripe at the bottom of the car has been removed and the door handles have been moved further down on the door. The Bentley has also received a slightly different roof line, new rear doors, a new bumper, and new taillights to match the headlights.

The only place left untouched on the Bentley Continental Flying Spur is its already superb 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine rated at 575 HP and 516 lb/ft of torque.

Expect to see the new Continental Flying Spur launched by the end of 2012.
