British automaker, Bentley, will be unveiling a convertible version of its most powerful and fastest Continental ever in March at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The 2011 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible will go on sale in June (all markets) and is expected to have a price of approx. $300,000. As with the coupe version, the Supersports Convertible is powered by a 6-liter W12 twin-turbocharged engine that delivers a total of 621bhp at 6000 rpm and 590lb ft of torque at 2000-4500 rpm. It makes the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 3.9 seconds, while top speed goes up to 202 mph. The new convertible also features: ZF 6HP26 transmission with ’Quickshift’ system that cuts shift times by 50%, all-wheel drive system, Continuous Damping Control (CDC) system, stiffer suspension, lightweight, 20-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels offering 22lb weight saving per car, carbon-ceramic brakes, lightweight, carbon fiber, front sports seats, saving 99lb per car, Alcantara, carbon fiber and ’Soft Grip’ leather and of course, FlexFuel capability. Updated 02/15/2011: We’ve updated our review with more details! Check it out! Press release after the jump. The exteriorAs with the coupe version, the Supersports convertible is distinguished by a center air intake and vertical grilles, subtly curved rear wheel arches with newly tooled side panels , larger, twin elliptical exhaust tailpipes and rear valance with discreet vertical divider and fixed rear boot lid spoiler for improved aerodynamics. Also, the radiator, lower grille and dual bonnet vents are finished in a striking Smoked Steel finish, while the stainless steel exhaust system is painted in PVD finish. The car sits on new lightweight, 20-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels combined with carbon-ceramic brakes. The interiorOn the interior the Continental Supersports is all about a combination of elegance and sportiness: lightweight carbon fiber, Alcantara and all the finest material found their way into this piece of art. The sculpted lightweight sports front seats feature a carbon fiber clamshell back and Diamond-quilted Alcantara, while Alcantara is also used for the rear compartment, door panels and seat facings. The steering wheel and gear lever are trimmed in new ’Soft Grip’ leather. The EngineContinental Supersports Convertible is powered by a twin-turbocharged W12 engine that is capable of running on both gasoline and E85 bioethanol. With an output of 612 HP, the engine will sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in 3,9 seconds and up to a top speed of 202 mph. More than that, on February 15th, the Continental Supersports Convertible became the fastest car on ice with a record speed of 205.48 mph. The car received minimal modifications: a fully-welded, heavy-duty safety roll-cage, along with Pirelli winter tyres (Pirelli SottoZero II 275/40R20) and a rear bumper-mounted parachute. The engine is mated with a revised ZF 6HP26 transmission with ‘Quickshift’ system that cuts shift times by 50 percent and enables double downshifts and also thanks to its FlexFuel capability it can improve CO2 net emissions by up to 70%. The CompetitionThe market of luxury convertible models is quite large and there are lots of models to choose from. However, we will focus on the next three: BMW M6 convertible, Ferrari California and Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet. The new generation BMW M6 is about to be launched. It will come with a turbocharged 4.4 liter V8 that will deliver around 600 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque. While the sprint from 0 to 60 mph will be made in 4,5 seconds, top speed is still limited to 155 mph. The Ferrari California is powered by a V8 engine with 460 HP that sprint the model from 0 to 60 mph in about 4 seconds. Bad news for the California is that is much slower than the Supersports: it can only hit a top speed of 192 mph. But it is cheaper: $228,000. But for those of you who want a real sports car, the 911 Turbo is no doubt the best choice. It is powered by a 3.8 Liters flat-six engine that develops 500 HP and as much as 516 lb-ft of torque with the Sport Chrono Package. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph is made in only 3.4 seconds and can reach a top speed of 194 MPH. Price? $143,800. And yew, we know it only offers interior room for two-persons, but after all this is a sports car, not a sedan. PricesOn the US market the new Continental Supersports Convertible will go on sale this summer at a price of $280,400. Press release The Continental Supersports Convertible further strengthens Bentley’s supercar range, following the introduction of the Continental Supersports Coupé in 2009. The new Supersports Convertible, with the same 630PS (621bhp/463kW) twin-turbocharged W12 engine, is the fastest, most potent drop-top Bentley has ever built, offering the ultimate Bentley driving experience in the world’s most dramatic convertible. The inspiration for the ’Supersports’ name is the 1925 Bentley Supersports, a race-bred version of the iconic Bentley 3-litre, that delivered 85bhp when more ordinary cars were equipped with a modest 15bhp. It was also the first production car to reach 100mph – extreme performance in its day. The new, muscular four-seat Supersports Convertible is unmistakably Bentley in its design and craftsmanship but its interior signifies a dramatic re-interpretation of Bentley luxury. Satin-finished carbon fibre, Alcantara™ and ’Soft Grip’ leather create a unique ambience with a distinctly sporting THE NEW CONTINENTAL SUPERSPORTS - AT A GLANCEThe fastest, most potent drop-top Bentley ever
A highly focussed, extreme Bentley convertible driving experience
Convenience Packs are available for all Continental models and include features such as Adaptive Cruise Control with ’Follow to Stop’ feature, an iPod™ interface, front seat massage function, telephone handsets, rear-view camera and Valet key THE CONTINENTAL SUPERSPORTS CONVERTIBLE - IN DETAILThe new Continental Supersports Convertible is a car that must be driven to be fully understood. Behind the wheel it is immediately clear that a Supersports Bentley is a ’fusion of extremes’ – the ultimate in extreme performance, every day practicality and unrivalled hand-crafted luxury. A highly focussed, pure Bentley driving experienceWith 630PS (621bhp) and 800Nm (590lb ft) of torque from its pioneering FlexFuel engine and new ’Quickshift’ transmission, the Supersports Convertible is the fastest drop-top Bentley has ever built. It accelerates from 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds) and, conditions permitting, can continue onto a top speed of 202mph (325km/h). The front suspension trailing lever features a new design of hydraulic bush, 33 per cent stiffer than those of GTC Speed, for improved steering response while the uprated rear anti-roll bar provides improved body control and turn-in response. The retuned CDC system provides enhanced control of body movement to strike the optimum balance between agile handling and ride comfort during all driving manoeuvres. Agility is further sharpened by a 40:60 rear-biased torque split for the all-wheel drive system which reduces understeer during hard cornering and allows the experienced driver to modulate the car’s line and balance via precise throttle control.
The increased power and torque of the W12 engine necessitated an additional 10 per cent airflow to the twin turbocharger intercoolers and cooling system. With extensive use of Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques, Bentley’s designers responded with a purposeful and dramatic style, featuring Restyled – and more aerodynamic – door mirrors match the exterior paint choice and the window and door surrounds replace polished stainless steel with a Smoked Steel finish to match the front grille. Eye-catching, black gloss Bentley-branded brake calipers act on the carbon ceramic brakes. Surrounding the brakes are the unique 20-inch, forged alloy wheels with Smoked Steel-finish which are exclusive to Supersports models. Large diameter tailpipe trims round out the car’s purposeful stance when viewed from the rear. Beneath the bonnet Supersports badges grace the cover of the 630PS (621bhp) W12 engine. A re-interpretation of Bentley craftsmanshipInside the Supersports Convertible, the cockpit is a dramatic execution of iconic Bentley design displayed in its full glory every time the roof is lowered. Dirk van Braeckel, Director of Design and Styling, describes the approach taken by his interior design team: "The design team has fully embraced the spirit of Supersports to create a dramatic interpretation of Bentley luxury for the new Convertible where traditional craftsmanship and fine detailing are given a very different interpretation. Leather hides combine with new materials for Bentley such as satin-finished carbon fibre and Alcantara™ to create a unique ambience with a distinctly sporting and contemporary style." Lightweight carbon fibre is featured throughout the cabin, from the unique carbon-weave treadplates with Supersports script in both doorwells to the sculpted lightweight sports front seats, which feature a carbon fibre clamshell back and Diamond-quilted Alcantara. Each seat weighs just 21kg and, in a typical example of attention to detail, the visible weave in the carbon fibre has a ’Bentley-specific’ density to ensure the perfect visual finish. The Continental Supersports is the first Bentley to offer a combination of soft-grip leather and performance-enhancing Alcantara™ alongside the leather hide. Alcantara™ is favoured by racing teams for its ability to provide additional grip under extreme conditions, such as cornering. But it is also sensational to look at, as well as being immensely supportive on the road or track. The Alcantara™ applied to the rear compartment, door panels and seat facings is quilted and in the Supersports marks the return of the much smaller ’diamond’ upholstery pattern from Bentleys of old. To further highlight the car’s sporting nature, the steering wheel and gear lever are trimmed in new ’Soft Grip’ leather with extra grip for a supercar feel, and drilled alloy sports pedals stand out in the driver’s footwell. FlexFuel technology introduced on all 2011 Continental modelsFlexFuel technology, pioneered on the Continental Supersports Coupé in 2009, is now extended to the complete 2011 Continental range, including the new Supersports Convertible. The W12 6-litre power unit now has the technology to run on petrol, E85 bioethanol or any mix of these two fuels – all from a single tank.Bioethanol is blended with petrol in a variety of percentages ranging from E10 (10 per cent bioethanol) to the most widely known, E85, a ratio of 85% bioethanol to 15 per cent petrol to ensure cold-start capability. Enhanced choice for all Continental customersIn addition to the transition to all-FlexFuel engines, the Continental range receives a host of new exterior and interior specification enhancements for the 2011 models, which emphasise the unparalleled craftsmanship and materials that are used to create the exquisite interiors for which Bentley is renowned. 27 comments: Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible Ashton_Blake (283) Posted on 02.15.2011 This reminds me of how everyone was saying the first-gen US spec STi and Evo were faster than various cars from European manufacturers. They just don’t get it. The performance might be as good or better, but everything else is worse - and *that’s* what those other drivers are paying for.
JaysonIdler (452) Posted on 02.15.2011 You are all missing the point. This is a straight-up luxury car that also happens to have stupid performance figures (in a good way). It is luxury first, speed second. That’s why a compare to the CTS-V (which I would buy in a heartbeat) is null and void, as well as the GT-R.
Jharna (1) Posted on 11.15.2010 The 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports gets its power from a 6.0-liter W12 engine capable of generating utmost power of 621 hp and utmost torque of 590 lb-ft of torque. http:// The standard drive here is all-wheel drive, while standard transmission here is standard. The acceleration time of the car is really impressive, and the 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a quick time of 3.8 seconds.
sammy_james (693) Posted on 09.2.2010 And this is what we called a ’dream’ vehicle for all. It’s really fantastic!
Andress (1243) Posted on 08.3.2010 I just drove the Super sport coupe this past weekend. Very impressive, but not sure it fits comfortably into the Bentley image.
stanleymorris (505) Posted on 07.14.2010 You really have to read the reviews about Bentley because the interior never shows how great this car is.
Ping_Guererro (939) Posted on 07.12.2010 amazing. it has the same top speed as the Lexus LF-A. but quite heavy.
Omarion_Steve (767) Posted on 07.11.2010 why would you choose an expensive car that has only 145MHP? better choose a nimble and cheap that has a 150MPH limited Speed. what I’m saying about is the Evo or the Impreza STI.
rielle_brown (859) Posted on 07.8.2010 Great review of an even insanely greater car. How on earth that’s so comfortable and quicker than an M3, Exige S, Gallardo Spyder, i will never fully understand.
Bobby_Cruz (513) Posted on 07.8.2010 I’m afraid that I’ve never been able to keep the Aston line clear in my head, between DBS, DB9, V8 Vantage, V12 Vantage, etc.
anthonyevers37 (1029) Posted on 07.7.2010 It’s really a matter of personal taste. Personally, I’ve never cared for the styling of the various Bentley Continental models and this one doesn’t do it for me either.
chris_cortez (612) Posted on 07.7.2010 weight is one of the biggest problem of cars, more weight mean more fuel consumption because of the resistace to the engine.
Euginewoods (556) Posted on 07.6.2010 I really love the front ends design, it looks menacing and aggressive, but when it comes to back... hmm i say it’s good, but not that appealing.
rogermanalac (702) Posted on 07.1.2010 Pretty cool, I think when you ride on that car, I guess people might intend that you are a celebrity.
adam_valentine (725) Posted on 06.30.2010 It’s really a matter of personal taste. Personally, I don’t care for the styling of the various Bentley Continental models and this one doesn’t do it for me either.
Andress (1243) Posted on 06.29.2010 A new Convenience Pack for all Continental models bundles adaptive cruise control, an iPod interface, front seat massage function, telephone handsets and a rear view camera.
CollinGronholmn (707) Posted on 04.4.2010 It looks fantastic (I love the Continental line) , but correct me if I’m wrong; by adding all of the roof stuff and putting the rear seats back in again, doesn’t this negate the weight savings already reaped by the Coupe?
greenmann (18) Posted on 04.1.2010 Another glamouros toy for the guys from Dubay. soon we will see a golden version of this Bentley
Ping_Guererro (939) Posted on 03.22.2010 Lovely luxury car but like nash said. It so sad the the $100.000 less car put some dirt to a $300,000.00 super car.
