After releasing a video showing off the sound of Bentley’s new V8 engine, the company has officially announced details on the new Continental GT V8 before its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 9, 2012. The new 4.0 liter, twin turbocharged V8 engine will be offered for both the CT coupe and GTC convertible models and will go on sale in the summer of 2012.

The new V8 engine delivers 500 HP at 6000 rpm and 487 lb-ft of torque available between 1700 to 5000 rpm. The models equipped with this new engine will be offered with a new close-ratio 8-speed automatic transmission and will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds, while top speed will go up to 180 mph. Fuel economy and CO2 emissions have been improved significantly, but official figures will be released in early 2012. Bentley has promised that when equipped with the new V8 engine, the Continental models will be capable of traveling over 500 miles (800km) on a single tank of fuel.

"With the new 4.0 liter V8 engine we are widening the appeal of the latest generation of Continentals, introducing a completely new driving experience. The new engine will have all the exhilarating power, drama and performance you would expect from a V8 engine sporting the famous Bentley wings, effortlessly delivered with our characteristic ‘wave of torque’. This is complemented by innovative powertrain technology that delivers exceptional fuel efficiency and emissions," said Wolfgang Dürheimer, Chairman and Chief Executive, Bentley Motors.

UPDATE 02/22/2012: Bentley has unveiled a series of new images of the Continental GT V8. Enjoy!

British luxury automaker, Bentley , and Swiss timepiece maker, Breitling, have been partners-in-crime far longer than any of us can remember. So it only seemed appropriate that the latter would commemorate the launch of the new Continental V8 with a limited edition timepiece.

The Breitling for Bentley GMT V8 is a limited piece luxury watch that pays homage to the newest model in the Bentley line-up. Among the features of the Breitling for Bentley GMT V8 include a metallic red inner city bezel that plays a nice contrast with the watch’s black dial and the Royal Ebony dial. There are also cambered sapphire crystal that have been glare proofed on both sides with 38 additional jewels. There’s also a red triangle-tipped hour hand that completes one rotation every 24 hours, a multiple timezone display, an automatic COSC-chronometer-certified chronograph with a Breitling exclusive “30-second chronograph,” 6-hour, 15-minute, and 30-second totalizers, a screw-locked crown, and a sweep seconds hand that makes one full turn of the dial in half-a-minute, allowing readings that are accurate to an amazing 1/8th of a second.

For all of its unique characteristics - and the fact that it’s a Breitling - the 250-piece limited edition watch costs $10,590 a pop. It’s expensive for a watch, but it’s a bargain compared to actually buying the car itself, which by the way, costs 20 times as much.

Bentley is extensively prepping for their future with a couple of new paths to higher sales. Just recently, the company has downsized from a W12 to a V8 engine and their next course of action is to offer a plug-in hybrid model. In an interview with Car and Driver, Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer reported that the hybrid system could be based on Volkswagen technology and that it could combine either a W12 engine or a V8 engine with an electric motor placed between the engine and transmission. This system will allow an electric-only range of 16 to 19 miles - a relatively good range considering we are talking about very heavy vehicles.

Another new direction Bentley is taking, and probably the stranger of the two, is their announced plans to steal customers from Maybach. This bit of news came shortly after Mercedes announced that the last Maybach unit would be produced in early 2013. Bentley hopes that this termination of production will get stars like hip-hop artist Jay-Z, actor Samuel L. Jackson, and King Juan Carlos to turn their attention from the old Maybach models to Bentley’s line-up. We would think that Rolls Royce would be a good candidate as well, but Bentley wouldn’t be a bad way to go either.

"The withdrawal of Maybach is a business opportunity for us and we’re going to use it," Bentley Chief Executive Wolfgang Duerheimer told Reuters. And they aren’t too worried about Mercedes’ decision to offer an S600 Pullman because "they wanted something more exclusive than a Mercedes in the first place, so Rolls or Bentley would seem an obvious substitution."

In this war, Bentley has the advantage of planning alarge luxury SUV that will be placed over the top Cayenne and it will be "highly customizable, including a wealth of interior materials and a choice of four- or five-passenger configurations."

Not that we needed one at this point, but Bentley has finally "confirmed" their future SUV, said to be "the world’s most luxurious 4x4." Their future model will follow the Mulsanne and Continental cycles, debuting sometime in 2014 with a powerful 12-cylinder engine . This announcement comes after the impressive results posted by the company in 2011: sales were up 37% to 7003 for the calendar year with sales accelerating as the year progressed.

"If we bring this (SUV) to the market it will be positioned significantly above the vehicles that are currently available in this segment," Bentley brand chief Wolfgang Durheimer said Tuesday. This means that the new Bentley SUV will be placed above any other SUV on the market and will be priced at more than $140,000.

This confirmation will undoubtedly force Lamborghini to make a final decision on their third model, which will more than likely be an SUV since the strong demand for sporty soft-roaders coming from emerging markets such as China, Russia and India has risen. That being said, Lamborghini’s final decision will be announced in March at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

There are two things you need to know about 14-year old Maddy Wagner: she loves supercars and she has autism.

The former may sound trivial compared to the latter, but Maddy doesn’t think of herself any less even with her condition. She has her dad to thank for that. Her father said that it was important for “Maddy not be defined by her autism. I’ve taught both my kids that they can accomplish whatever they believe they can accomplish. Yes, she’s autistic, but in every other way, she’s just like every other teenage girl. I hope people don’t see her as being autistic but rather as being a beautiful young lady who can accomplish anything she sets her mind to.”

And what Maddy set her mind to was a fascination for exotics and one of her holiday wishes was to get a chance to ride in one.

Last week, her wish became a reality, except that instead of riding in one supercar, Maddy was able to sit shotgun in 13 of them. From Bentleys , Ferraris , Lamborghinis , and even a Caterham , Maddy’s holiday wish came true with the help of some selfless supercar owners.

Breitling and Bentley have teamed up once again to create a limited edition chronograph that marks Bentley’ recent world-record breaking exploits on the ice. This watch joins the current Supersports "Ice Speed Record" convertible edition that will be limited to only 100 units.

The Breitling Bentley ISR has borrowed many of its design cues from the special edition Bentley Supersports Ice Speed Record Convertible. It gets a carbon fiber fascia with dashboard-style dial, a classically knurled finish on the control buttons, distinctive red dialing, and a carbon fiber presentation box.

Wolfgang Duerheimer, Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive, said: "Juha Kankkunen’s drive was a remarkable achievement and worthy of a very special car. The Continental Supersports "Ice Speed Record" is a true driver’s car that captures that unique Bentley spirit. It offers extreme performance, agility and an extrovert personality, while retaining the refinement, handcrafted luxury and comfort our customers expect."

The new Bentley Continental GTC just made its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show and will be sold in here at a starting price of $212,800. But while people were amazed by its beauty in LA, in UK a Bentley Continental Bentley Continental GTC has been auctioned for an impressive £240,000, or about $325,000 at the current exchange rates. All the proceeds went to this year’s Children in Need fundraising activities.

"Nearly 400 people saw the auction unfold and, as the price kept on rising, the whole place fell silent. To reach £240.000, even for the very latest Bentley which is still making its debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show, just takes your breath away."

"Above all this has been an incredibly good result for Children in Need. The fact that the new owners are Bentley enthusiasts and love these cars is a bonus for us. We’re looking forward to welcoming them and their unique car to the dealership for many years to come." said Jon Crossley Managing Director of Bentley Manchester.

Bentley unveiled the facelift version of the Continental GT towards the end of 2010, so the next logical step was to refresh their Continental GTC as well. The Speed model is still based on the original Continental GT that was launched in 2003, but has been given updates to make it look fresh and new.

And now, leading up to the Frankfurt Motor Show, Bentley has officially unveiled the 2012 Continental GTC. Just like all of the spy photos we’ve seen of the car, the new Continental GTC comes with an aggressive front fascia, a vented hood, and new headlights. The back of the Bentley also got tweaked with the addition of a trunk-mounted spoiler, slimmer taillights, and a revised exhaust system.

The luxury sportster also benefits from an increase in output from its 6.0-liter W12 engine, a fact that should make fans of the model smile from ear to ear.

UPDATE 11/16/2011: The new Bentley Continental GTC made its North American debut today at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. During the show, Bentley announced that the model will go on sale in late 2011 at a price of $212,800.

Maserati Cinqueporte

Sisters shouldn’t fight and apparently that also holds true in the auto industry. Maserati , Ferrari’s little sister, is hard at work becoming more of a player in the industry and has set its target on competing against both Porsche and Bentley .

But not with its Italian big sister.

According to Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, Ferrari is in a class of its own and that Maserati will be focusing its attention on competing with the likes of Porsche and Bentley. "Ferrari doesn’t play with Bentley and with Porsche, it plays in its own [sand] box," he said.

The seeds have already been planted for the Italian automaker to accomplish this and expand the model line-up, as well as refreshing some of the existing models in the portfolio. We’ve already heard about Maserati’s intention of introducing a crossover on the market - the tentative name is the ’Cinqueporte ’ - to battle the likes of the Cayenne and now it appears that the company will also have plans for a new small sedan , as well as a larger version of the Quattroporte .

Looking at the big picture, Maserati is pushing forward with their plans of increasing the sales figure of the brand all the way up to 60,000 units. That might sound a little bit of a stretch now, but if in fact these guys are serious about competing with a company like Porsche, they’re going to need to invest every last bit of their resources to ensure that they at least come close to the benchmarks they’ve set.
