BMW 4 Series Coupe

We haven’t heard anything about the production version of the BMW 4-Series Coupe ever since the company unveiled the concept version at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. Today, however, our spy photographers managed to catch the car during a break in testing.

As you can see, next to it there was an Audi A5 Coupe, meaning that BMW likely wanted to see how the coupe version of the 4-Series would stack up to its key competitor.

When compared to the 3-Series sedan version, the upcoming 4-Series will be a few inches longer and will feature a more aggressive front end that will transform the coupe into a very sporty model. Still, you should expect the same three-dimensional BMW double kidney grille and the headlamps we have seen in the new generation 3-Series sedan.

Under the hood, BMW will place the latest four- and six-cylinder engines, including a new 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine.

Expect the new BMW 4-Series Coupe to arrive later this year.

We already know that beginning with the next-generation 3-Series , the coupe and the convertible versions will no longer be offered as a 3-Series model. Instead, BMW will add a new model to its lineup known as the 4-Series .

We are all eagerly anticipating a production version of the 4-Series to show up soon, but BMW will start off with a little teasing, as it will first release a concept model. The 4-Series concept will make its world debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show and BMW has just released the first official details of the upcoming concept.

The new 4-Series will take its design inspiration from the 6-Series Coupe and it will offer "greater sportiness, greater exclusivity and even clearer differentiation" from the 3-Series. It will also be longer and feature a lowered roof line.

BMW offered no details on the engine lineup just yet, but the production version will be offered with the same engine lineup as the 3-Series sedan.

Update 12/7/2012: BMW has just launched a video outlining the all-new BMW 4-Series Concept with higher ups at Bimmer talking about the improvements of the new Coupe.

UPDATE 02/18/13: Leave it to BMW to leave us dumbfounded about a new promo video for the new BMW 4-Series Coupe. It’s in German, which we don’t really understand, but a quick browse through Google Translate seems to suggest that the promo video is saying the that the 4-Series Coupe is "the Ultimate Driving Machine". And who are we to disagree. Check out the video by clicking on the photo above.

BMW 4 Series Coupe

It looks like BMW will also be unveiling a concept version of the upcoming 4-Series Coupe next to the X4 Concept at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. With about two months left before the car’s official debut, the upcoming 4-Series Coupe has been caught in production form and nearly fully uncovered somewhere in Munich, Germany while being loaded for transport to an internal presentation.

When compared to the current E92 3-Series coupe, the F32 features a sleeker roofline with a more fastback shaped tail end, but not as dramatic as in the Audi A7 . The rear quarter windows have also been elongated, but the most visible styling embellishment is the front quarter panel vent, which not only adds a sporty visual flair, but also appears to be an actual functional vent. While the front end is still camouflaged, we expect to see wider and sleeker headlamps which, just like with the 3-Series sedan , will connect with the grille.

The model caught in these pictures is the 435i (or 440i) Sport Line. As you can see, the visible parts of the front bumper show differences from the F30 Sport Line front bumper and there is also a different exhaust system. There is a more prominent center U shaped trim piece which dips down from the inside of the air vents and forms a prominent lip below the license plate area. It also looks to be either black or carbon fiber. The car sits on 19" M Sport Wheels wrapped in 225 tires up front and 255 at the rear.

The next 4-Series Coupe will be offered with a choice of two engines: a 2.0-liter twin-turbo in-line 4-cylinder for the base version and the successor for the current N55 twin-turbo in-line 6-cylinder engine for the top version. Both engines will be available with either a manual transmission or 8-speed automatic, and both should also be available with xDrive.

After the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept is unveiled in January, production will begin in the spring of 2013. The convertible version will follow later in 2013.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupè

There have been many speculations about the future existence of the Gran Coupe version of the upcoming 4-Series , but now there’s confirmation in the form of its very first testing session. This prototype was initially thought to be a 3-Series GT , but after a closer look, it was obvious that this is indeed the future 4-Series GranCoupe - codenamed F36.

As these spy shots reveal, the lower front end is similar to the one seen in the 4-Series Coupe , while the roof line is lower and the trunk is different. The next 4-Series will feature the lowest and sleekest roofline, followed by the slightly taller F30 sedan, and then the GT.

When compared to the F30 sedan, the 4-Series Gran Coupe will get a few centimeters added to its overall length. The model will top the 3-Series /4-Series range just as the 6-Series Gran Coupe does for the 5-Series /6-Series range. Like the 6 Series Gran Coupe, the 4-Series Gran Coupe will be the flagship of the non-M series line and will be priced accordingly.

Like the 6-Series Gran Coupe , the 4-Series Gran Coupe will combine the convenience of a 4-door model (and larger rear passenger cabin) with the sleek roofline and silhouette of a coupe. Its design language and engine line-up will be shared with the upcoming 4-Series coupe.

Expect to see the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe launched sometime in 2013.

BMW M4 Coupe

So far, all we’ve heard about the upcoming BMW M4 Coupe have been rumors, but now the vehicle has finally been caught testing for the first time. As you surely know by now, the upcoming BMW 3-Series will only include the sedan and station wagon models, while the coupe and convertible will be sold as the 4-Series. This means that the M3 will only be offered as a sedan, and if you want to buy a performance coupe or a convertible, you’ll have to buy the M4 .

When compared to a standard 4-Series Coupe , the M4 version will get the usual M-design elements like the front bumper, LED headlights, a wide track, different side air intakes, a sports exhaust system, and larger wheels.

Under the hood, the model will be rid of the current V8 found in the M3 and will benefit from a twin-turbocharged inline-six engine that will deliver about 450 HP. This will make the upcoming M4 both more powerful, as well as more fuel efficient than the current M3 Coupe.

Starting in the 2013 model year, BMW will stop offering a 3-Series Coupe and Convertible. Instead the new models will wear the 4-Series moniker, while the 3-Series name will only be kept for the sedan and station wagon. BMW is currently under intense testing of the future 4-Series Convertible and in the past few months, we have brought out plenty of spy shots. And the spy shots keep coming. This series of spy shots capture the future 4-Series Convertible with its top down so we can have a better look at the interior.

The 4-Series Convertible will be placed under the 6-Series Convertible in terms of price, but it will combine design elements from the 5-Series and 6-Series , as well as carry the now famous BMW wide kidney grille. Under the hood, the new model will feature the latest four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel units found in the BMW lineup, including the new 245 HP 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine.

Expect to see the new BMW 4-Series Convertible launched in 2013.

The upcoming BMW 4-Series Convertible has been caught topless before, but now the spy images that were captured show off the details of the vehicle’s roof mechanism. Just like the current 3-Series Convertible (E93) , these photos officially confirm that BMW has decided to go with the folding hard top mechanism.

The BMW 4-Series Convertible is still heavily camouflaged, hiding most of the lines, but according to some inside information, the front end will differ from the recently announced F30 3-Series sedan and will be more sculptured and sportier. In fact, rumors say that the new 4-Series will take most of its design elements from the5-Series and 6-Series , but with more squared-off headlights and larger eyebrows.

Rumors also say that the 4-Series will be offered with the latest four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel units found in the BMW lineup, including the new 245bhp 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine.

The new BMW 4-Series Convertible will be launched sometime in 2013 and will go on sale as a 2014 model.

The convertible version of the new generation BMW 3-Series is out in the wintry climate again to finish up some of its testing and our spy photographers were able to grab up a few more images. Technically, the future model will be wearing the 4-Series nomenclature, just like its coupe variant.

Despite the heavy camouflage, these images show that the upcoming 4-Series Convertible will feature a front end that differs slightly from the 3-Series sedan. Similarities between the models will more than likely be seen under the hood, where the 4-Series will get a range of four- and six-cylinder engines The most powerful engine will be the 3.0 liter version that will deliver about 306 HP.

Expect the new BMW 4-Series to be revealed sometime in 2013, with sales to begin in 2014. Considering that the new M3 will be shown as a sedan first, we expect to see an M version for both the 4-Series Coupe and Convertible shortly after the debut of the standard version.

BMW 4 Series Coupe

BMW is playing around with its lineup these days, providing a couple of models with different names, depending on their body styles. The first to get that differentiation was the 3-Series , with the sedan and station wagon versions keeping the 3-Series name and the coupe and convertible getting tagged as 4-Series models. The BMW 3-Series sedan has already debuted, but the coupe and convertible models are still undergoing testing proven by the new series of spy shots for the upcoming 4-Series Coupe .

The future BMW 4-Series Coupe will be a smaller version of the current 6-Series with design elements borrowed from its 3-Series sedan brother. But the fact that it is a coupe model will make it sportier and more aggressive. The model will be immediately recognized as a BMW thanks to the usual design features: new-style exposed, three-dimensional BMW double kidney grille and a larger rear window.

Under the hood of the 4-Series, BMW will place the same engines as in the sedan version - including two petrol and two diesel - with output going up to 306 HP for the most powerful version - the 435i.

As many already know, BMW will be dropping the 3-Series name for its future coupe and convertible models and using the 4-Series nomenclature as a replacement. We’ve already seen spy shots of the upcoming 4-Series Coupe , but now its convertible variant has also been caught testing. From these images we can see that the new drop top model will retain the same folding hardtop as the current 3-Series Convertible and will debut shortly after the Coupe.

The future 4-Series Convertible will utilize an engine line-up similar to that of the 3-Series sedan , meaning the latest four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel units in BMW’s lineup. This includes the new 245bhp 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine as well.

The 4-Series’ design will borrow elements from the 5-Series and 6-Series models, but with larger, more squared-off headlights. The wide kidney grille will also have a 3D look to match that of the latest BMW models.

The BMW 4-Series Convertible will be revealed in 2013 and will be followed by an M version shortly thereafter.
