BMW 6 Series

  The BMW 6-Series began its life back in 1976 with the E24 6 Series and saw its second generation unfold in 2003 with the E63/E64 6 Series. This generation 6-Series was powered by a 3.0L inline-six engine (petrol and diesel), a 4.8L V8, and a 5.0L V10 BMW M6 engine. These engines were mated to a choice of a six-speed manual or automatic, and a seven-speed SMGIII. The third generation of the 6-Series is nearing with the first model appearing as the 650i Convertible. The vehicle will be powered by two gas engines: a 6 cylinder twin turbo engine producing 320hp at 5800rpm and a V8 twin turbo engine producing 407hp at 5500 rpm.

BMW introduced the 6 Series (E24) in 1976 as a successor to the E9 (New Six) coupes. Powered by as many as 215 ponies in its range-topping trim, the 6 Series was far from being slow, but a true-blue high-performance model would arrive for the 1984 model year. Motivated by the same 3.5-liter, inline-six fitted in the M1, the first-gen M6 cranked out 282 horsepower and came with a top speed of 158 mph. When BMW discontinued the 6 Series in 1989, the M6 disappeared too. The M6 performance coupe would return for the 2006 model year, two years after BMW resurrected the 6 Series. A redesigned, third-generation model was launched for 2013, this time hiding a 4.4-liter, V-8 engine under its long hood. Rated at 560 horsepower, the N63 mill made the new M6 one of the most desirable coupes on the market. As we’re moving closer to 2015, the Germans are readying a mid-cycle refresh for the M6, which will hit dealer lots for the 2016 model year.

The M6 facelift is pretty much in line with each and every update BMW has launched in 2014. Revised front and rear fascias, a slightly updated interior, and maybe a tweaked engine are to be expected from the Bavarian GT for 2016. Just enough to keep it fresh before a brand-new model arrives in 2018.

The current BMW 6 Series is a hot commodity. With three different models — the two-door coupe, GranCoupe with four doors, and convertible version — BMW offers plenty of choices for consumers looking to drop some considerable change for this sporty, luxurious car. Engine offerings start with a 3.0-liter, 315-horsepower, twin-scroll turbocharged inline-six, dubbed the 640i. Next up is the 650i, with a 4.4-liter V-8, also featuring a twin-scroll turbo design, which is good for 445 horsepower. The mighty M6 Convertible comes with a more powerful version of the 650i’s V-8, producing an almost-crazy 560 horsepower. Performance is blistering, regardless of engine choice, and typical BMW luxury and top-notch fit and finish adorn the interior.

While the current 6 Series Convertible is certainly fresh, this isn’t stopping BMW from updating the lineup for the 2016 model year, and our spy photographers caught this facelifted model out testing.

Prior Design is a well-known tuner that specializes in upgrading German metal. Many recent Mercedes , Audi , and BMW models have gone under Prior Design’s knife and come out modified quite handsomely. We recently reviewed the BMW M6 GranCoupe , customized by Prior Design and came away very impressed. Its latest offering is for the true two-door version of the 6 Series. Prior Design upgrades are marketed as mostly aerodynamic enhancements, but these upgrades simultaneously give the modified cars a stunning, show-worthy, tuner look.

This Prior Design BMW 6-series is a prime example. While the stock 6 Series is one of the better-looking BMWs of today, with clean lines and a slippery shape, the Prior Design team dramatically increases this already-pretty car’s street presence, all the while helping it cut through the wind in an even easier fashion with sharp, functional aerodynamic upgrades.

BMW Individual has continued its torrent pace of releasing new programs for its models. Not even recent releases can stop the Bavarian automaker from unveiling a new one, this time for the BMW 6 Series and the M6 Gran Coupe .

This time around, BMW enlisted the help of Bang & Olufsen to give the 6 Series and the M6 Gran Coupe a unique and luxurious sound system befitting the status of the high-end audiophile. But that’s not where the upgrades end.

Both the 6 Series and the M6 Gran Coupe received a new Sophisto Grey metallic paint finish, further driving up the class of both luxury models . The Opal White, fine-grain Merino leather adds a nice complement to the black exterior while the Alcantara headliner and piano black interior trim pieces provide the latest touch of luxury. BMW Individual continues to be identified as a division that can really make something good and turn it into something great.

Updated 06/06/2014: BMW announced prices for the new 6 Series Bang & Olufsen Edition which will be limited to just 100 units. Prices will be $116,240 for the 650i version, $119,240 for the 650xi version and $152,423 for the M6 version.

The folks over at Prior Design have been rolling out some great mods lately, and we’re not talking just about the White Phoenix kit for the 2014 Audi R8 . No, the company’s PD550 package for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is way cooler, especially for bringing a Black Series-like look to the four-door coupe before the company even thought about doing it. The German specialist is also known for having a thing for BMWs . It has been modifying anything from compact 3 Series to the larger 7 Series in the past, but, more recently, the tuner turned its focus to the M6 GranCoupe , the four-door coupe we’ve already had an in-depth look at.

As with most Prior Design projects, the M6 GranCoupe received a more aggressive appearance via a body kit that changed everything from the bumpers to the fenders, and added a brand-new hood and a trunk-lid spoiler. The larger rear diffuser blends perfectly with the bumper’s lateral air outlets, and a set of beefier wheels and tires are in place to make sure this M6 stays glued to the road.

BMW’s personalization group, BMW Individual, is up to its old tricks again. Fresh off of revealing its take on the 4 Series Gran Coupe , BMW Individual has announced its latest piece of work, a customized BMW M6 Gran Coupe that has been finely dressed in a Frozen Red metallic paint finish.

Proving that subtle changes often make the best impact, this finely crafted 6 Series Gran Coupe not only gets a new fancy color, its door handles were also detailed in dark chrome to provide a nice complement to the fancy red look of the car. A BMW Individual Manufaktur signet in the Hofmeister kink was also added to ensure that the car retains its true personalized character.

Inside, the upgrades are fancier and more noticeable, beginning with an Opal White, full fine-grain Merino leather on the seats, contrasted by Sakhir Orange stitching. More interior trims include a Piano Black finish with accents in Frozen Red on numerous sections of the interior, as well as a new doorsill finisher with the BMW Individual Manufaktur signet and Opal White floor mats to match the color of the upholstery. Even minor areas, like the cup holders, now have a Piano Black trim. Another subtle addition it the embossed signet of the BMW Individual Manufaktur in teach headrest.

Overall, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe in Frozen Red Metallic is a nice take on what a fancy customization of the luxury sports coupe should look like. Hopefully, this package goes to market soon because you can bet that a lot of customers will be interested in it.

The Alpina -BMW love affair goes back all the way to 1965, when the small Bavarian company began tuning carburetors and cylinder heads in a typewriter factory. Yes, that’s right, Alpina Alpina started as an office machinery company. The small venture began making a name for itself in the early 1970s by building a few BMWs that went on to win prestigious racing events and series such as the European Touring Car Championship, the German Hillclimb Championship and the Spa 24 Hours race.

More than forty years have passed since its 2800CS wowed the crowds, and Alpina established itself as a semi-official tuner whose creations can be found in between the stock BMW and the more potent vehicles delivered by the M Performance division. Well, sort of, but we’ll get back on that later in this review.

Moving on, Alpina’s latest creation, which is set to make it first public appearance on American soil at the 2014 New York Auto Show , is the 2015 B6 xDrive Gran Coupe — a more powerful and exclusive version of the BMW 650i Gran Coupe .

The all-wheel-drive performance sedan will become the second Alpina model to go on sale in the United States, where it will be joining the larger, 7 Series-based B7.

BMW came to this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas with two prototypes2 Series and 6 Series — equipped with all kinds of automated driving technology. Offered with the ConnectedDrive nomenclature, these two cars are the company’s attempt to develop autonomous-driving prototypes.

The two prototypes are equipped with BMW ActiveAssist, which "will make a significant contribution to bringing the vision of safe and accident-free mobility another step closer to reality."

BMW has been working on this ActiveAssist system for long time now, and in 2009, it unveiled its first Track Trainer research project that it successfully tested around the Nürburgring race track. Then, in 2011, BMW developed a new test vehicle capable of traveling 40 miles of accelerating, braking and overtaking other cars without any driver intervention at speeds of up to 81 mph.

Updated 1/7/2014 @ 3:30 p.m.: BMW just released a video showing the s Series ConnectedDrive getting its track shakedown on. Needless to say, watching this Bimmer drift itself is freaking awesome!

Now BMW announced that it is working on its first fleet trial of highly automated models and hope to have it ready for 2015. Also, starting in 2020, BMW hopes to offer highly automated driving in series-produced vehicles.

Back in March, Manhart Racing revealed its first tuning kit based on the new-generation BMW M6 . Today Manhart offers a second look to the sports coupe and came up with a more powerful, more aggressively looking M6 coupe.

The new kit is called MH6 700, which is a clear indication of the 700-plus horses at play under the hood. In order to obtain this amazing power increase, the Manhart equipped the 4.4 liter, V-8 engine with a "Stage 4" performance kit that includes a remapped ECU, a Carbon-Air-Intake-System, and a new exhaust system with downpipes, sports catalytic converters and sports rear silencers made of stainless-steel.

Thanks to all these updates, the V-8 engine delivers a total of 743 horsepower and 702 pound-feet of torque. With the extra power in tow, the sprint from 0 to 60 mph now only takes 3.8 seconds and it can now hit a top speed of 198 mph.

Bulgarian tuner Vilner doesn’t nearly get the love it deserves. But the company continues to produce some ridiculous programs over the years and this time around, it’s prepared something that it has described as its biggest project to date.

It’s also the first model Vilner has reworked completely, making it that much more significant in the eyes of a lot of people. It’s called the Bullshark, and it’s based on the second-generation BMW 6 Series Coupe and with a name that fits the billing, this bad-boy is one insane Bulgarian-tuned masterpiece.

The length by which Vilner reworked the model is evident by the fact that only the doors and the roof were kept stock. Everything else was changed, including a host of new aerodynamic components, all of which were made entirely from carbon fiber.

Inside, brown and beige accidents dominate the seats, which goes well with blue belts and matching stitching. Cowhide was the material of choice, further highlighting the exclusivity of the program, while the steering wheel, seats and gear shifter were also all rebuilt. Finally, an 11-speaker audio system was installed, which included a pair of amplifiers and a trunk-mounted subwoofer for a little extra boom.

Finally, an engine upgrade was also given to the 6er Coupe, resulting in a modest increase to the output of the car’s 4.4-liter, V-8 engine from 333 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque up to 370 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque. The improved numbers allow the Bullshark to hit 62 mph in just 5.4 seconds to go with a top speed of 173 mph.
