BMW 7-Series

The BMW 7-Series started back in 1977 and has gone through five generations since then. The BMW 7-Series is only available as a sedan and is powered by three gasoline and two diesel variants, along with xDrive all-wheel drive. The engines are mated to either a six-speed automatic transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 4.4L twin turbo V8 produces 400/440hp and 450lb-ft of torque while the 4.4L V8/Electric Hybrid gets 455 net hp and 516 net lb-ft of torque. The giant 6.0L twin turbo V12 pushes out 535 hp and 550lb-ft of torque.

BMW 7 Series investigated by NHTSA

Usually unflappable German engineering has taken a hit today. BMW has announced that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has initiated an investigation that centers on 120,000 2002-2008 7-Series models, ranging from the 730d to the 760li. This investigation began after a 2006 7-Series experienced an incident in which, after being placed in park, did not fully engage the park gear and proceeded to roll a short distance. This gearbox is designed to automatically shift into park, for example, when the vehicle is turned off.

If this pending investigation makes you nervous, keep in mind that the NHTSA has said that a) "thus far, no cause has been identified for any of the rollaway incidents" and b) it is not a full scale recall, just a preliminary investigation.

You may ask us, would we still buy one? Well, we have nothing but praise for the 7 series. We find it to be truly staggering, leaving us to shake our head in disbelief that a car the size of the state of Kansas can be made this fun to drive. This potential gearbox glitch does not affect our view of the Roundel and we continue to look reverently upon each model. This full size luxury sedan did not disappoint us and it won’t let you down either.

Thief has to pay taxes to the tune of $522,000 after stealing a Veyron

It took us a little while to be able to report on this simply because we were laughing so hard when we first saw it. Three thieves in Poland thought it would be a great idea to not only steal a Bugatti Veyron, but a one-off Grand Sport Sang Bleu - you know, the one created to celebrate Bugatti’s centenary in 2009. Oh, and it gets even better. These morons then went on to steal a BMW 7-Series and a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. Read on because it gets even better still.

After stealing the Veyron in Poland, the trio of hoodlums moved on to Oberrieden, Switzerland where they used the supercar to rob another house before they were pulled over by the police in Germany. That’s right, folks. They stole the car in Poland, robbed a house in Switzerland, and then got pulled over in Germany. Guess the old saying of, "three strikes and you’re out" rings true in this situation.

As a result of these extracurricular activities, the robbers will not only have to spend some time in the slammer, but they will also have to pay a tax bill of $522,000 because the stolen cars were registered in Switzerland. This is the point where everyone should just point and laugh at them.

Nice job, imbeciles. Maybe next time you can steal a greater number of exclusive vehicles and hit that $1 million mark!

2011 BMW 7-Series Steinway & Sons Piano Limited Edition

BMW has unveiled on the Chinese market the special edition 7-Series Steinway & Sons Piano. The new edition will be limited to only 150 units, and was developed by BMW Individual in cooperation to New York-based piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons.

The new 7-Series Steinway & Sons Piano Limited Edition will be based on either 740i or 760i versions, and will be distinguished by a hand polished metallic paint, with texture comparable with Steinway piano. The whole painting process takes at least 35 hours to complete. The special edition also gets light shadow lines and 20" lightweight alloy wheels.

On the interior, the front and rear seats, door panels, center console, instrument panel and other components are covered in ’Merino’ white gold full leather, contrasting with different black exterior and interior elements. Highlighting the cooperation with the Steinway company are: Steinway logo on the seat head restraints and seat cushion gold harp, iDrive button with Steinway logo.

2011 BMW 7-Series F01 by Mansory

Luxury tuner, Mansory, arrived at the Geneva Motor Show with vehicles such as the Siracusa and the Cormeum, two heavily modified sports cars based on the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Mercedes SLS AMG. However, what they didn’t display was their upcoming tuning package based on the new generation BMW 7-Series. The most powerful 7-series available - the 760Li - to be exact received a rather impressive update, as did the 750i package.

The aerodynamics kit includes a new front bumper, LED daytime running lights, a new carbon radiator grill, roof spoiler, rear rim, and rear apron. There is also a new sports exhaust system with stainless steel end mufflers and rectangular end pipes perfectly integrated into the newly designed rear section. After that, the only thing left to do was add on a new set of 22" wheels.

As for the engine update, the 750i has been tweaked to deliver up to 490 HP (up from 400 HP), while the 760Li is now capable of 640 HP (up from 544 HP). As a result, the 760Li will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in only 4.2 seconds - 0.4 seconds faster than its serial counterpart.

BMW 7-Series gets jacked during Detroit Auto Show

It’s got style, it’s got grace, and no, we’re not just reciting lyrics to Madonna’s Vogue. We’re describing the beautiful and powerful BMW 7-Series. A vehicle that, despite its prestige and price tag, was left alone to get stolen outside of a hotel during the Detroit Auto Show.

BMW brought 19 units of the $90,000 vehicle with them to this year’s auto show so the company’s top executives could all hitch a ride in one during the show. After the 7-Series’ job was done, the cars were loaded into a car carrier for transport back to their New Jersey home. The only problem is that only eighteen arrived.

Police say a hotel valet brought the BMW out of the garage and handed it over to the transporter. After that, the handler stepped away for a second and that’s when witnesses say two car thieves seized the opportunity to jump in and ride off. The stolen vehicle is dark gray and has New Jersey plates, but don’t go rushing the search party just yet. The vehicle is equipped with BMW Assist so the two carjackers should be caught within a reasonable time-frame. Bet they didn’t think of that, huh?

UPDATE 01/15/11: The BMW 750i xDrive luxury sedan that was improbably stolen at the Detroit Auto Show has been found, ending a few days worth of embarrassment for the German manufacturer. The car, which was left unattended a few days ago and was subsequently boosted, was found near Telegraph and Glendale Street in Detroit’s West Side. Apparently, the tracking system inside the BMW was cut and disabled, but it’s highly probable that because of the wide media attention brought about by the dastardly thievery, the criminals might have decided that the car wasn’t worth it anymore. All’s well that ends well, right? Yeah, try telling that to BMW.

2010 BMW 760Li by Shaston-Lumma

The Essen Motorshow may be just around the corner, but some tuners have opted to move on from the German tuning extravaganza to prepare themselves for the next auto show on the list: The 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Lumma Design and Shaston are just two of these tuners as they will be headed to Geneva to unveil their newly tuned BMW 760Li.

Lumma and Shaston have come together to provide a new tuning package for the long wheel-based BMW to give it a more aggressive look. This was accomplished by an exterior package containing a new front that integrates grid inserts, fog lights, and LED daytime running lights. An exclusive lower suspension setting drops the longer legged luxury sedan while the new wheel arch extensions, special set of deep door-sills, and the new rear diffuser add to the sharper look of the vehicle.

The whole appearance of the BMW 760li is completed by genuine carbon/Kevlar covering the exterior mirror caps, kidney front grille frame, all door handle covers, the boot lid trim, the four-piece pillar trim set for doors, and the mud guards. The entire package is finished by 20" light alloy rims.

There is still no word as to whether or not there have been any changes to the BMW’s direct injected TwinPower Turbo V12, but we think the power output of 544 HP and 553 lb-ft of torque should be enough for most. Guess we’ll find out in Geneva.

Press release after the jump.

BMW 7-series by WALD International

bmw 7-series by wald international picture

The new generation BMW 7-Series is a pretty impressive car that you might think it needs no modifications. But there are tuners out there who still found a few elements to modify. The Japanese tuner Wald International is offering a pretty impressive tuning kit for the 7-Series that makes it looking even sportier.

Called Sports Line Black Bison Edition, this package includes a custom front bumper with LED lighting, side skirts, a custom rear bumper with LED brake light, a new roof spoiler, a new exhaust system and a new set of 22" alloy wheels.

No changes were made under the hood, but from standard the 7-Series develops enough power for any car enthusiast out there. The Japanese tuner revealed no prices for the tuning package, but we believe that any price will worth this improvements. Also, do not forget this cool white exterior paint that makes it look even more impressive.

2010 BMW Individual 7 Series Composition

Some may compare the elegance of a BMW to that of a piano. No? Well, maybe it’s just BMW then as the German automaker has teamed up with piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons for an exclusive 7-Series model that borrows the design from one of their magnificent creations. This special edition model is based on both the normal and long-wheelbase versions and will be offered in just two exterior colors. We’ll let you take a guess at what those two colors might be.

The BMW Individual 7-Series Composition models will feature either a black or white exterior paint finish that is individually smoothed and polished by hand. This high end finish is given this treatment so that it may be comparable to the exquisite finish of piano lacquer. And since this model is supposed to be reminiscent of a piano, the focus has to lend itself to sound as much as exterior beauty. That is why BMW is offering an audio system specially adapted to the luxury saloon’s interior.

There’s no word as to how much this elegant beauty is going to set anyone back, but we imagine this limited edition will catch the eye of anyone who has a passionate love of music.

Updated 04/06/2011: The special edition BMW 7-Series Steinway & Sons made its debut on the Chinese market. The new 7-Series Steinway & Sons Piano Limited Edition will be based on either 740i or 760i versions and will be limited to only 150 units worldwide. This special edition will be painted in hand polished metallic paint, with texture comparable with Steinway piano. The whole painting process takes at least 35 hours to complete.

2010 BMW 7-Series by Lumma

Okay, here it is. At the end of July, we received an email with a few pictures detailing the new tuning package that was going to be put on the BMW 7-Series sedan by Lumma Design. We promised that we would get back to everyone as soon as we received the official details, and we now have them. Lumma Design has unveiled a new aerodynamic package for the 7-Series that will include a new front spoiler bumper, grid inserts, fog lights and LED daytime running lights, cup spoiler sword, rear apron corners, a set of deep door-sills, and a new rear diffuser.

Aside from the aerodynamic updates, Lumma Design has also added carbon elements on the exterior mirror caps, the kidney front grille frame, all door handle covers, the boot lid trim, and the four-piece pillar trim set for doors and mud guards. The exterior package is finished by impressive 22-inch light alloy rims fitted with 265/30 high-performance Vredestein tires in the front and 295/25 in the rear.

For the interior, the tuner is offering an aluminum two-piece pedal set with matching footrest, foot mats in the color in which the customer chooses with a Lumma logo and boot mat in any color, also featuring the embroidered logo.

One thing that did disappoint us about the official details is that nothing was done to increase power for the V12 engine that was just hanging out under the hood. Come one, guys! Show us the power!

Press release after the jump.

Superchips upgrades BMW’s 3.0D engine for various models

British tuner, Superchips, has decided that diesel engines can be just as much fun as their petrol counterparts, so they decided to do a little reconfiguring for BMW’s 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine that powers models like the BMW 3-Series, 5-Series, 7-Series, X5, and X6.

Superchips was able to increase the power of the diesel engine by 44hp at 4183 rpm and 90 Nm of torque at just 2222 rpm. This brings the total output to 313hp and 627Nm of torque. In order to accomplish this task, Superchips had to perform a remap of the engine while taking into consideration the "careful optimization of fueling and turbo boost settings". According to Superchips, this reconfiguration allows for a sharper throttle response, a keener, more urgent engine, a harder pull throughout the rev range.

The BMW 3.0 D ECU remap is priced at £445.00 and comes with a 12 month/30,000 mile supplementary vehicle warranty.

Press release after the jump.
