BMW 7 Series

  The BMW 7-Series started back in 1977 and has gone through five generations since then. The BMW 7-Series is only available as a sedan and is powered by three gasoline and two diesel variants, along with xDrive all-wheel drive. The engines are mated to either a six-speed automatic transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 4.4L twin turbo V8 produces 400/440hp and 450lb-ft of torque while the 4.4L V8/Electric Hybrid gets 455 net hp and 516 net lb-ft of torque. The giant 6.0L twin turbo V12 pushes out 535 hp and 550lb-ft of torque.

After debuting the 2013 BMW 7-Series , BMW has now unveiled the new Alpina B7 super-high performance luxury sedan with more performance, fresh design features, and improved efficiency. The new model will make its world debut at the Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance in August with sales to begin immediately after. Prices will start at $127,600 (B7 Standard Wheelbase), $130,600 (B7 SWB with xDrive), $131,500 (B7 Long Wheelbase), and $134,500 (B7 LWB with xDrive).

The new Alpina B7 delivers a total of 540 HP and 538 lbs-ft of torque (an improvement of 40 HP and 22 lbs-ft). Mated to a new Alpina Alpina 8- speed high performance transmission, the new B7 will go up to an impressive top speed of 194 mph (up from the previous 175 mph). The 0 to 60 mph sprint is now made in 4.3-4.4 seconds depending on the version.

Also, when compared to the previous model, the new B7 is offered with 30 new parts that will improve both design and aerodynamics. These new parts will include new BMW kidney grilles, updated Xenon Adaptive headlights, LED front fog lights, and updated tail lights. The car now rides on a new set of 21" 20-spoke wheels and is painted in the famous Alpina Blue Metallic paint.

It seems like since the beginning of time, Mercedes has offered a diesel option on its sedans to its U.S. customers, but BMW has always avoided putting these loud and relatively sluggish engines in its U.S.-bound cars. According to various reports, this is all due to come to an end in the near future, as BMW is prepping its 3.0-liter diesel power plant for U.S.-bound 7 Series models.

Nothing is definitive yet and we are still in the early phases of all of the speculation and reports, but we anticipate it to bear a 735d or 740d badge. We also do not know if BMW is planning to further tune the current 3.0-liter diesel engine to exceed its current 265 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque, but we certainly anticipate the German auto builder to pump up the horsepower to the 300 horsepower range to attract buyers.

As for fuel economy, we can expect the highway economy to jump from the 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway to roughly 19 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, given the fact that the much heavier and less aerodynamic X5 gets 26 mpg highway with the same diesel engine. This would make the 7 Series one of the most fuel efficient cars in its class, as the automaker strives to stay ahead of the CAFÉ curve.

Reports are pointing toward this new engine arriving in showrooms sometime in late-2013, but don’t be surprised to see it makes its way over here a little earlier. We will continue to monitor the details of this new engine and keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Last week, we reported that Ludwig Willisch, CEO of BMW’s North American sales subsidiary, wasfighting to offer its clients an M performance version of BMW’s top of the line sedan: the 7-Series . Now, new details suggest that BMW has indeed trademarked the M7 name, as well as an even more interesting M10, which were both previously registered in October 2010 (M7) and September 2011 (M10).

For the future M7, things are pretty clear. The next generation 7-Series will finally allow BMW to offer a real competitor for models like the Audi S8 and the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG .

For the M10, all we have to go on is the trademarked name. If we were to speculate, we would say that this is more than likely the name that will be used for a long-denied model: a BMW competitor for the Audi R8 and the Mercedes SLS . BMW has stated many times that the company would love to offer such a model, but have denied its existence on several occasions.

The search for trademarked names continues with the M1 and M2 names, as well as a bunch of i names, ranging from i1 to i9. Considering the i-sub brand was just in the news for being too ahead of its time, these names will probably sit on the sidelines until 2017 or beyond.

In related news, BMW also trademarked the Corniche name that will most likely be used for a convertible version of the Rolls Royce Ghost .

In a recent interview, Ludwig Willisch, CEO of BMW ’s North American sales subsidiary, offered a few more details regarding the company’s plans to expand its M line-up. He said that the American market is pressing BMW corporate headquarters in Munich to add an M variant to its new BMW 7-Series , even though BMW has said that the M7 will never happen. Now, this negative response to the production of the M7 may be changing, especially with Willisch’s counterpart in China also asking for the same thing. "I think we will get it," the BMW North America CEO said, but his lips were sealed tight after that, skipping out on offering any further details such as a launch date prediction.

Our hopes of seeing yet another M model gracing the BMW showfloor are high, but Willisch also reiterated that not all BMW models would get an M version. For example, he said that an M variant will never happen for models like the X1 or the X3 . Instead, models like this will get a range of accessories through its new M Performance line. These options will improve the models’ general look, but won’t add significant performance upgrades.

People have been talking about a possible BMW M7 for quite some time, and now in an interview with Car And Driver, Friedrich Nitschke, President of BMW ’s M division has confirmed that the company is indeed considering a competitor for models like the Audi S8 and the Mercedes S63 AMG . However, he did not refer to it as the M7; instead he used the name "M Performance 7-Series ."

This means the M7 hasn’t been confirmed just yet, but the M Performance model will be close enough to the real thing to gauge reaction. The future model will surely receive the same treatment as all the models unveiled in the past few months by BMW M Performance . These changes will include new front and rear aprons with large air intakes, a bespoke rear apron, a new exhaust system with a trapezoidal shape, and a new set of 20" M light-alloy wheels.

If built, the new 7-series M Performance will be unveiled sometime in 2013.

BMW’s long list of special edition, market-exclusive vehicles just got a little longer with the release of the uber-exclusive BMW 7-Series Individual Pure Black.

Limited to only 50 units, the 7-Series Individual Pure Black will only be sold in Russia and is based on the 750Li xDrive limo that carries a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 407 horsepower under its hood.

More than just the powertrain, the 7-Sieres Individual Pure Black Exclusive differentiates itself with a Black Sapphire paint finish, bi-xenon headlights, a new set of 19" alloy wheels, and BMW’s ’Black Chrome’ exterior package for the grille, door surrounds, door handles, mirror casings, and exhaust pipes. Befitting the stature of the car and the prospective clients it will have, BMW dressed up the limo with piano black trim elements and an Alcantara roof lining.

They also put in electrically-adjusted seats with memory and massage function for the driver, four-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, HiFi Professional System, and Internet access via the BMW ConnectedDrive system.

Obviously, the car has been luxed up to a great degree. And as such, don’t expect a paltry price tag for the vehicle because one unit costs €123,301, which is around $162,000 based on current exchange rates.

The BMW 7-Series is designed for luxury first and power second, but German tuner, TuningWerk, has decided to change up BMW ’s priorities just a bit. Well actually, a whole lot. TuningWerk’s new package for the 750Li luxury sedan increases the 4.4-liter turbocharged V8’s output to a total of 720 HP, while top speed has been bumped up to 223 mph. There is also a milder version available for those that can’t handle the extra push.

The new 720 HP and 803 lb-ft found in the top kit can sprint the Beamer from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds before the Carbon Ceramic brake system slows it to a halt. This performance is facilitated by the weight reduction options chosen by TuningWerk. The firm reduced the 7-Series’ weight by 264 lbs thanks to a lightweight design sports exhaust system and front and body sills made out of a combination of carbon fiber and other lightweight materials. The kit, car included, costs 198,000 euros or about $270,000 at the current exchange rates.

If the thought of being carried by 720 HP is too much to handle, TuningWerk has also released a "small-scale" version that will boost output to 530 HP and 545 lbs-ft, up from the standard 362 HP and 360 lb-ft of torque. This version will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 192 mph. It will set you back 169,800 euro or about $230,000 at the current exchange rates.

BMW 7-Series

Usually unflappable German engineering has taken a hit today. BMW has announced that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has initiated an investigation that centers on 120,000 2002-2008 7-Series models, ranging from the 730d to the 760li. This investigation began after a 2006 7-Series experienced an incident in which, after being placed in park, did not fully engage the park gear and proceeded to roll a short distance. This gearbox is designed to automatically shift into park, for example, when the vehicle is turned off.

If this pending investigation makes you nervous, keep in mind that the NHTSA has said that a) "thus far, no cause has been identified for any of the rollaway incidents" and b) it is not a full scale recall, just a preliminary investigation.

You may ask us, would we still buy one? Well, we have nothing but praise for the 7 series. We find it to be truly staggering, leaving us to shake our head in disbelief that a car the size of the state of Kansas can be made this fun to drive. This potential gearbox glitch does not affect our view of the Roundel and we continue to look reverently upon each model. This full size luxury sedan did not disappoint us and it won’t let you down either.

It took us a little while to be able to report on this simply because we were laughing so hard when we first saw it. Three thieves in Poland thought it would be a great idea to not only steal a Bugatti Veyron , but a one-off Grand Sport Sang Bleu - you know, the one created to celebrate Bugatti’s centenary in 2009. Oh, and it gets even better. These morons then went on to steal a BMW 7-Series and a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano . Read on because it gets even better still.

After stealing the Veyron in Poland, the trio of hoodlums moved on to Oberrieden, Switzerland where they used the supercar to rob another house before they were pulled over by the police in Germany. That’s right, folks. They stole the car in Poland, robbed a house in Switzerland, and then got pulled over in Germany. Guess the old saying of, "three strikes and you’re out" rings true in this situation.

As a result of these extracurricular activities, the robbers will not only have to spend some time in the slammer, but they will also have to pay a tax bill of $522,000 because the stolen cars were registered in Switzerland. This is the point where everyone should just point and laugh at them.

Nice job, imbeciles. Maybe next time you can steal a greater number of exclusive vehicles and hit that $1 million mark!

BMW has unveiled on the Chinese market the special edition 7-Series Steinway & Sons Piano. The new edition will be limited to only 150 units, and was developed by BMW Individual in cooperation to New York-based piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons.

The new 7-Series Steinway & Sons Piano Limited Edition will be based on either 740i or 760i versions, and will be distinguished by a hand polished metallic paint, with texture comparable with Steinway piano. The whole painting process takes at least 35 hours to complete. The special edition also gets light shadow lines and 20" lightweight alloy wheels.

On the interior, the front and rear seats, door panels, center console, instrument panel and other components are covered in ’Merino’ white gold full leather, contrasting with different black exterior and interior elements. Highlighting the cooperation with the Steinway company are: Steinway logo on the seat head restraints and seat cushion gold harp, iDrive button with Steinway logo.
