BMW M-series


Like Ron Burgundy, high-performance cars are kind of a big deal around here. Anytime something new comes out, it causes quite a stir. So you can imagine the excitement built up over the new offerings from BMW and Lexus . Both companies have been hard at work building track-ready beasts like the M3 /M4 duo and RC F ready to take on the clock, the instrumented testing, and each other as they duke it out for a spot on your dream driveway.

While neither the M4 Coupe nor the RC F has been driven by anyone outside their respective manufactures, the comparisons have already begun. And that’s what we’re doing here. A detailed look into their numbers, estimated performance stats, and brand history to see which car is likely to find itself on top once the real-world comparison tests happen.

Until time narrows towards the cars’ launches this summer, guessing is all we can do. However, we can make educated guesses based on the criteria above. We will also take a close look at each car’s interior and exterior design, usability, and pricing. Follow along as we dive deep into the numbers to dissect which car will emerge as king.

BMW M4 Convertible

While the BMW M3 and M4 models are out, BMW is still testing other models in the 3 and 4 Series lineup, like this M4 hardtop convertible caught testing in the chilly winds of Scandinavia.

Looking past the camo, not much has changed with the M4’s bodywork. The aggressive front fascia, hood and side vents are still present, as well as the rear aero work and quad exhaust. The rear deck lid does seem flatter than the coupe’s, as it meets the folding rear glass at a more forward location. That rear glass is respectably large, making rearward visibility very good and blind spots a nonexistent feature.

We can expect the M4 drop top to share the same underpinnings and powertrain options as the standard M4 — namely its 3.0-liter, TwinPower in-line six that makes a ridiculous 430 horsepower and the choice of a traditional six-speed manual transmission or a swanky seven-speed dual-clutch unit.

Added weight is always a huge consideration when chopping the top, and BMW is likely to have something up its sleeve to keep the weight close to the 3,300-pound M4 coupe. Heavy use of carbon fiber and carbon fiber reinforced plastics will likely find their way into the construction of that mechanical hardtop, while structural rigidity will probably benefit from the same as well.

Expect the standard M4 and M3 to find themselves in dealers beginning this June with the M4 convertible not arriving till later in the year. Pricing, of course, is still up in the air, but we’d guess an $8,000 to $10,000 price hike over the standard M4.

Just when we were starting to grasp BMW ’s recent name change and switch-up of its bread-n-butter 3 Series sedan and the new-for-2014 4 Series coupe, the German automaker threw another curve ball: the 2015 4 Series Grand Coupe. So now the coupe version of the 3 Series sedan has its own four-door sibling. Makes perfect sense...

The news here is the future addition of the M4 Grand Coupe — the spiced-up version of BMW’s not-a-3-Series four-door sports car. BMW has yet to release any official images of the M4 Grand Coupe, but our rendering wizard has sent us this amazing preview of the upcoming super sedan. The actual M4 GC is set to debut at the Geneva Auto Show in early March 2014. Until then, this is what we’re going off of.

In all reality, the 4 Series GC is a different car than the 3 Series sedan. It’s fully based on the regular two-door 4 Series. It even shares its same wheelbase and overall length as the 4 Series coupe. Its major difference is in the B-pillars on the back. A higher roofline, shorter front doors, and the addition of two rear passenger doors makes the 4 Series GC a much more usable, yet still coupe-like five passenger saloon.

We’re suspecting the M4 GC will get the same M treatment the M3 got, which is a 3.0-liter TwinPower turbocharged in-line six-cylinder, making a stout 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The six-speed manual gearbox and the optional seven-speed, double-clutch transmission will likely be offered in the M4 as well.

As with years past, BMW is celebrating Chinese New Year with the launch of a special-edition model, built specially for China . We’re pretty sure that most of you remember the very successful M3 Tiger Edition announced back in 2010. Now, as China officially enters the year of the horse, BMW is releasing the special-edition M6 Gran Coupe Horse Edition.

Do not expect this special-edition M6 to offer numerous updates over a base M6 Gran Coupe. In fact, it is based on a model equipped with the Competition Package and it includes embroidered horse logos on the headrests.

The new BMW M6 Gran Coupe Horse Edition is limited to six units ,and each will carry phenomenal price of 2.77 million yuan — about $458,000 at the current exchange rates. To put that into perspective, the U.S.-spec BMW M6 Gran Coupe is priced at $115,000, so that is quite a hike.

BMW also announced that the same treatment will also be applied to 30 M5 sports sedans too. This version will be priced at 1.98 million yuan - or about $327,000.

Last year, a BMW M3 tricked by G-Power to deliver a total of 610 horsepower managed to hit an amazing top speed of 337.6 km/h (209.7 mph) at Italy’s famous high-speed test track in Nardo. With this result, G-Power managed to break its previous record at Nardo established back in 2011, when a 570-horsepower BMW M3 hit a top speed of 333.1 km/h (206.9 mph).

Now, in order to celebrate the record-breaking event, G-Power announced the special-edition BMW M3 "Hurricane 337." Only 30 units will be produced and it can be applied to M3 V8 SK I, SK II and SK II CS supercharger systems.

This special M3 "Hurricane 337 Edition" is equipped with a powerful ASA T1-523 radial supercharger, a high-flow air intake with large racing air filter, a large volumetric intercooler system made from cast aluminum and a cast aluminum air box. All these changes increased the final output up to a total of 615 horsepower and 438 pound-feet of torque.

In order to improve the engine sound, G-Power also installed a full titanium exhaust system including a set of racing catalytic converters, which also help save a total of 57 pounds from the car’s total weight.

BMW M4 Coupe

BMW offered the M3 CSL only for the 2004 model year, and it produced only 1,400 units. The M3 CSL was 240 pounds lighter than the standard M3, offered an updated suspension, a more aggressive body kit and an upgraded transmission. In fact, the model enjoyed so much success that Jeremy Clarkson himself named it "BMW at its absolute best."

The only problem is that the history is not about to repeat itself, as BMW has no plans to offer a CSL version — or anything like it — of the new M3 and M4 . That’s because, according to Matt Collins product manager for BMW’s small to medium cars, the current M3 and M4 model are as light as they can possible get: "they come in under 1500kgs (3300 pounds), which for a car like this is incredible."

This may be depressing to some Bimmer fans, but it also goes to show that BMW really put everything it had into these models. We cannot help but tip our hats to the German automaker.

BMW unveiled a new promo video that it shows the new M4 Coupe and M3 Sedan , and their amazing competency on the race track. Both cars were pushed to their limits and drifted seemed to handle it well.

Both the M3 and the M4 are powered by a 3.0-liter, in-line six-cylinder engine that features M TwinPower Turbo technology and deliver a total of 425 horsepower between 5,500 and 7,300 rpm and 406 pound-feet of torque between 1,850 and 5,500 rpm.

With this power in tow, the sprint from 0 to 60 mph is made in 4.1 seconds with the six-speed manual transmission and in 3.9 seconds with the optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission. For both models, top speed is limited to 155 mph, but with the optional Driver’s Package top speed can be increased to 174 mph.

BMW M4 Convertible

The new BMW M4 Coupe made its North American debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show and while we were busy gawking over it, BMW engineers took the M4 convertible version out for some cold weather testing in Sweden.

The prototype caught testing is still heavily camouflaged, which seems pretty odd because the M4 Convertible shouldn’t look any different than the coupe version; well, except when you drop the retractable hard top.

Under its hood, the M4 Convertible will borrow the 3.0-liter, in-line six-cylinder engine from its coupe sibling that delivers 425 horsepower between 5,500 and 7,300 rpm and 406 pound-feet of torque between 1,850 and 5,500 rpm. Performance figures should be within a few tenths of a second of the coupe’s numbers — the extra few tenths are due to the additional weight from the convertible hardware.

Expect the BMW M4 Convertible to be unveiled in the upcoming months.

BMW 7-Series

For all the strides BMW has made in expanding its lineup, one model that’s still noticeably absent from its fleet is a performance-oriented 7 Series .

Talk of a potential M7 has floated around for years, but nothing has really come out of it, leading a lot of people to think that Bimmer is more than content letting Audi and Mercedes enjoy the high-performance luxury segment with the S8 and S63 AMG , respectively.

But not everybody inside BMW seems to agree to this point, including M development chief, Albert Biermann. Speaking to Autocar, Biermann indicated that if he had a say on the issue, he would emphatically call for the M division to develop the M7 so that it could compete with its aforementioned rivals, not to mention the suddenly resurgent Jaguar and its prized luxury cat, the XJR .

Biermann did acknowledge that, while he feels strongly about having an M7, the company still has no current plans to make one, nor does it have any intention to do so in the foreseeable future.

Those who believe that an M7 isn’t feasible can likewise point to the Alpina-tuned B7 as the car that can generally match wits and power with the S8s and S63 AMGs of the world. To that, Biermann contends that a B7 and an actual M7 could be packaged as two totally different models with the latter making full use of Bimmer’s performance division.

But as they say, one voice won’t exactly lead to the change of battle plans and Biermann appears to be resigned to the fact that an M7 isn’t in the cards for the time being. It’s a consequence that could be attributed to BMW’s approach to limit its M models, opting instead to package its new babies as M Performance models the same way its doing with the X3 and the X4 .

It’s a shame considering that an M7 would’ve been awesome. Really, really awesome.

The BMW M3 has been tearing up racetracks and back roads since its introduction in 1983. Its small size, nimble handling, and powerful engines have propelled the two- and four-door sports car into the hearts of hotshoe drivers and hall-of-fames everywhere.

The M3’s many changes over the years have never seem to hurt its sparkling reputation, although some models are more sough-after than others. The outgoing 4.0-liter V-8, for instance – was something not quite befitting the M3 badge. Power? Yes, it had it, but delivery was never as smooth or predictable as the legendary 3.2-liter inline 6 cylinders of the E36 and E46 model M3s.

So when it came time BMW rework its premiere sports sedan, judicious marksmanship was needed to hit the intended target labeled ‘perfection.’ Follow along as we dive deep into the all-new 2015 BMW M3.

Updated 01/15/2014: BimmerFestreports today that on the U.S. market the M3 will be priced from $62,000, not including $925 destination and handling. If these prices are for real, then the new M3 will priced pretty much identical to the old M3 sedan.
