BMW M-series


In what could amount to be disappointing news for BMW fans, the German automaker has confirmed that there will be no cross-breeding between its M performance division and the newly launched i-brand.

All the rumors were effectively put to bed at the recent unveiling of the i8 hybrid supercar after BMW Group’s head of technology communications Cypselus von Frakenberg told CarAdvice at the Frankfurt Auto Show that the i8 and i3 will not have an M version now or in the future.

“It is separate – M and i,” von Frakenberg said. “It’s two different sub-brands, but there will be no ‘M’ i-car in the future. One of the biggest stumbling blocks on building an M version of an i-car is the completely different engines both cars use on respective models. The M models come with combustion engines while the i-cars run on electric drive. It would be a difficult proposition to pull off and one that BMW believes isn’t necessary given how the company appears set on promoting the "i" line as a separate brand that will complement the M division and the core BMW line.

von Frakenberg’s sentiments was echoed by another BMW exec — Carsten Pries, head of product management for the M Division — who said that both sub-brands have different strategic focuses and that combining them into one model could compromise what both are trying to establish individually.

“BMW ‘i’ obviously has a different strategic focus, very much targeting into the area of sustainability,” Pries said, before adding, “It’s two different operations, there’s no fluctuation from BMW M to BMW i or any big transfers going the other way."

So, it looks like our speculation on a possible i3 M will remain just speculation, for now. This could still change in the future, as we have become rather accustomed to automakers changing their minds and the drop of a hat.

Tuner, tuner on the wall, who is fastest of them all? Tuningwerk from Germany just launched its upgrades for the factory BMW M135i hatch, a body style and trim name not sold in America. This upgrade goes far beyond engine management, with big changes under the hood, in the suspension and on the limited-slip diff out back.

Power is a quoted 355 horsepower for the light upgrade, and a whopping 443 horsepower with everything included. From a posh commuter car, this Tuningwerk M135i is a triple threat with its monster sprint pace, high-speed overtaking power that is on par with supercars , and its track and racing prowess

In the magic world of aftermarket performance, verified claims are always hard to nail down.

Even so, an extra 50 or more Tuningwerk horsepower creates quite a handful of a sports car, and one that is so powerful that driving it safely on the road can become part of the thrill and challenge.

Tuningwerk really cranks up the menace of the BMW 1 Series , and this humble hatchback is suddenly a lot more like the ‘breadvan’ Z3 M Coupe as a real banshee of power over-steer.

All good things. After all, hatchback car guy is grumpy when trouncing big Audi’s or Porsche ’s in stoplight drag races.

The first reviews of the production i8 and i3 are finally out, and the styling really cleans up nicely without the trademark blue disguise wrap worn by the prototypes over the past two years.

The other shock of shocks? The first drive impressions of the i8 are coming back as highly favorable, with great interactivity on the limit and track poise beyond any current EV.

This is huge news for the future of the Ultimate Driving Machine as we know it. The slow creep of isolation and refinement is becoming problematic on the M6 and other fast Bimmers, so the worry has been that adding electricity to the mix will further isolate and dull the experience.

Everyone can sigh a breathe of relief. Both BMW i models run a 50:50 weight balance, carbon-fiber tub with alloy crash cradles. These are all extremely advanced designs shared between the i8 hybrid supercar and the i3 . So, where does a potential i3 M fit in the pricing and technology mix for the future BMW i range?

With the i3 and i8 arriving at American BMW dealers together as 2015 models, all systems are go for the global roll-out of these production models. The price gap might raise an eyebrow or two: from about $43,000 for the i3 up to $135,000 for the i8 .

Back when we first received details on the new X5 M50d, they were all still in their preliminary phase, and now BMW has finally unveiled all of the official information on its resident diesel crossover .

As no surprise, this diesel X5 will be offered with the same upgrades as the standard X5, including a new front and rear fascia, a new set of headlights and an updated interior.

The new X5 M50d will also carry a three-stage turbocharged 3.0-liter powerplant that is set to send plenty of horsepower and amazing torque through an eight-speed automatic box and out to all four wheels. This accounts for a 0-to-100 km/h (62 mph) time of under 6 seconds and fuel economy that will blow the doors off of many gasoline-powered economy cars.

The bad news is that to date, there is no mention of the new BMW X5 M50d coming to the U.S. market, hence it being a 2013 model year instead of a 2014.

When G-Power released the first M6 Bi-Tronic III kit , we were rather impressed by the stunning 640 horsepower and 573 pound-feet of torque the tuner was able so milk from the 4.4-liter V-8 engine. Well, color us astounded, as G-Force went right back into the garage and churned on the Bi-Tronic-III V2 kit for the F13 M6 that makes this one of the fastest and most powerful M6 models on Earth.

G-Power added in a new ECU tune and a high-flow exhaust system to extract 710 horsepower between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm, and 656 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm from the fire-breathing BMW V-8. That’s an unthinkable 150-horsepower and 156 pound-feet gain over the already awesome base M6. With this mammoth amount of power in tow, the M6 Bi-Tronic III sprints to 200 km/h (124 mph) in just 10.8 seconds and hits a top speed of 186 mph — a 31 mph gain. Unfortunately, G-Power did not make light of its 0-to-60 mph time, but we’re sure it is far better than the stock 4.1 seconds — likely, it is around 3.5 seconds (0.3 seconds faster than the original Bi-Tronic III M6).

G-Power went to great lengths to also enhance the handling, braking and look of the M6 with additional components. Keeping the M6 glued to the road are 21-inch G-Power Hurricane forged wheels with 265/30 Z-Rated Michelin tires up front and super-wide 305/25 Z-rated Michelin rubber out back. Making sure the body roll is minimal and that maximum rubber touches the road is the GM6-RS G-Power coil-over suspension

G-Power also added in a ceramic braking package that reduces unsprung weight and brake fade for optimal stopping power without negatively affecting the car’s handling.

The BMW Concept M4’s official images were revealed today in Pebble Beach, where the Concept M4 will join the vintage 507 Cabriolet and a few other greatest hits on the BMW show grass this week. The Concept M4 previews one of the most exciting new cars of next year, and BMW ’s M car concept history tells us that the production car will pack all of the drama and technical beauty of this stunning concept.

No details yet on the powertrain or the performance, but considering that the 335i hits 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds - the extra performance of the M4 should bring the times into the high 3’s for the first time. Explosive turbocharged power is a sure thing - and goes very well with the stunning visual feast that is the Concept M4.

Away from the glamor and sun-drenched crowds at Pebble Beach, the 2015 BMW M4 production model is undergoing final testing and handling tweaks, with its arrival in U.S. dealers some time next summer to battle the Nissan GT-R , Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe and the Audi RS5 .

If you ask us, the best BMW model ever built is the M3 E30. Mercedes has yet to match the perfect balance that Bimmer pulled off with the M3 E30, even the C63 AMG falls short. But the newly launched A45 AMG certainly gives our latest BMW favorite, the M135i, a run for its money. And who better to put the two head to head than Chris Harris?

So, what does Chris Harris think about two of the latest German models: the BMW M135i and the new Mercedes A45 AMG ? In the latest episode of Drive he put the two sports hatchback through every test he could muster up and tried to find out which one is the best. He tried them on the road, the track, compared the lap times and the standing start acceleration times in an attempt to see which one is better: Stuttgart or Munich?

As usual, Harris brings us a nice mixture or crazy driving, limit pushing, sarcasm and intelligence to his comparison to make it all the more interesting. Check out the video to see what Chris thinks of the two German hot hatches.

Even though it has been out of production for over a year now, the 1 Series M Coupe remains one of the coolest models ever offered by BMW . To sweeten the pot even more, BMW built just 2,700 units, making it one of the most appreciated BMW models.

German tuner, Sportec, obviously loves the 1 Series M, as it is serving up a pair of upgrades for the compact Bimmer. In its natural state, the 1M Coupe is plenty powerful, as it delivers a total of 335 horsepower at 5,900 rpm and 332 pound-feet of torque from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. This is enough to launch the compact coupe to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.

In Level 1, Sportec reprogrammed the ECU to push the output to a total of 385 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. By our estimation, Level 1 should drop the naught to 60 mph time to about 4.3 seconds.

Level 2 is more complex, as and includes a larger oil cooler, a downpipe with 100-cell metal catalytic converter and a sports air filter. As a result, the TwinPower 3.0-liter in-line-6 engine delivers a total of 420 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, which we estimate to drop the 0-to-60 time to just over 4 seconds.

In conjunction with the next-generation X5 , BMW is also working on the M version of the SUV. The model has been caught testing for the first time doing some quick and loud laps around the Nürburgring race track.

Although the SUV is still fully camouflaged, there are some distinctive M elements that confirm this is the future X5 M. These special elements include the quad M exhausts, the active differential, and blue brake calipers, which have become the signature color for M model brakes. Behind the M brakes, there are drilled rotors which are being used for the first on any X5 model.

At the front of the car, there are huge air intakes and a path that connects the headlights to the kidney grilles, a feature found on the F30 3 Series.

Under the hood, there will be the same engine that can also be found in the M5 : a twin-turbo V-8 delivering some 560 horsepower.

Expect to see the new BMW X5 M sometime in 2014.

UPDATE 06/03/2013: Now that we have gotten a look at the new BMW X5, it is pretty easy to imagine how the new M version will look. Today we have created a rendering of what we think the upcoming X5 M will look like.

BMW M4 Coupe

It’s been a while since we last caught the upcoming BMW M4 Coupe testing, but it’s definitely worth the wait. Today, our spy photographers managed to catch the car testing at the famed Nürburgring racetrack in some slippery conditions.

As you can see, the car is still heavily camouflaged but it is still pretty easy to see that for the first time, the M4 Coupe is wearing something other than its typical black paint. This may seem insignificant on the surface, but it is a sign that BMW has reached the next level of testing and that an official unveiling is drawing near.

BMW also tipped its hand by equipping this particular model with a set of gold-colored calipers, which indicates that this 4 Series features the M Carbon Ceramic brakes.

As for the engine, rumors indicate that the M4 will be powered by a S55 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine with an output of 415 horsepower.
