Video: the story behind the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

BMW has just launched the "unscripted", a series about people, talking about their life, passion and joy with the brand BMW. And the first man talking about his passion is Juergen Greil, one of the engineers behind the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept.

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is a 2+2-seater plug-in hybrid model powered by a three-cylinder turbodiesel engine combined with two electric motors. All three of them are delivering 356 hp and a peak torque of 590 lb-ft. Fuel consumption is reduced to 75.1 mpg imp, while CO2 emissions is just 99 grams/km. The new hybrid concept can hit a top speed of 155 mph, while the 0 to 60 mph sprint is made in 4,8 seconds. We have to remind you that a production version is set to be unveiled in early 2012.

BMW confirms production of sports car with plug-in hybrid technology

It seems that yesterday’s rumors were true: BMW will indeed offer a production version of the Vision EfficientDynamics concept unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The announcement has been made official today by BMW.

The company said: "By developing a sports car based on the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept study for serial production, the Munich-based premium automobile manufacturer underscores its position as a global leader in the production of sporty vehicles with exemplary efficiency. All current models are fitted as standard with extensive measures for the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The innovations used for this purpose are based on the development strategy BMW EfficientDynamics, which also includes BMW ActiveHybrid technology as well as purely electrical drive systems. With the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, two serial production vehicles have already been launched in which a BMW-specific combination of combustion and electric drive results in an especially efficient increase in the driving dynamics so characteristic of the brand."

The concept car features a combination of a 3-cylinder turbo diesel with a hybrid synchronous motor at the front axle and a full-hybrid engine at the rear axle enables an overall system output of 328 HP. BMW did not announce what kind of engine the future sports car will feature, but at least we know there will be one!

Press release after the jump.

BMW’s "Joy is Futureproof" commercial features BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car

BMW’s latest line of commercials goes a long way in explaining just how far BMW has come in providing its customers with its Efficient Dynamics philosophy to almost all of the cars in its fleet. While the ad may be remembered for the appearance of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept, the whole message is pretty simple and clear-cut: despite boasting of some pretty state-of-the-art technological features, the Vision EfficientDynamics concept is far from what they consider a new car.

Rather, the concept is a model of just about every car BMW has built, with an eye towards using technology that maximizes what every car-loving individual looks for in a car: the joy of driving.

Watching the commercial is one thing, but understanding what it represents for BMW – now and in the future – is completely a different thing. As far as BMW is concerned, their mission has shifted from producing powerful cars to producing cars that are still powerful yet can also boast of being supremely efficient.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics into production?

Unveiled back at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is now rumored to entering production. According to sources at InsideLine, BMW will produce between 5,000 and 10,000 units of the 21st century plug in hybrid keeping the same diesel burning and electric poer train combination. According to the same sources at Edmunds, this might be the second true production super car after the Giugiaro M1, but "there will be less of the synthetic glass and more solid structure added to the final design." We expect the production version of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics 2+2 seater plug in hybrid to debut sometime in 2012.

Powered by a three cylinder turbo diesel power plant combined with two electric motors for a maximum output of 356 HP and 590 lb-ft of peak torque. This ensures that the new 2+2 will consume 75.1 MPG and emit only 99 grams/km of CO2 while being able to accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in just 4.8 seconds and reach a very green top speed of 155 MPH.

Video: BMW Vision EfficientDynamics at the LA Auto Show

If you made a poll on what concept car that was revealed in 2009 would stick to the minds of pistonheads all over the world, one that would sit on top of the list is BMW’s revolutionary Vision EfficientDynamics concept.

Ever since it was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September, the Vision EfficientDynamics has been the talk of the automotive world, and rightfully so. We’ve gone over all the specifications, photos and videos of the car and it seems like all of it still isn’t enough to satiate our appetites for this concept car.

So before the year ends, we have a new video of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics courtesy from the folks over at Edmunds Car Pool. This video was taken during the recently-concluded LA Auto Show where it takes us on an up-close tour of the car while it was prominently displayed during the event.

Enjoy.

Governor Arnold Scwarzenegger welcomes the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept to the LA Auto Show

BMW’s new hybrid concept, the Vision EfficientDynamics, made its way to the LA Auto Show and it didn’t take long for the car to attract quite an audience; the most noteworthy of which is California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger himself.

During his press conference highlighting green cars, the ‘Governator’ got a chance to get behind the wheel of the Vision EfficientDynamics concept where he was given a quick tour of the vehicle by Peter Miles, BMW of North America’s executive vice president of operations.

After making its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW’s Vision EfficientDynamics concept captured the world’s attention mostly because of its revolutionary design and never-before heard of performance capabilities, including the capacity to travel 431 miles before it needs to be recharged and refuelled.

And while most Americans have waited months to see the car up-close, their wait has finally come to an end when the Vision EfficientDynamics makes its long-awaited appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

And as always, Governor Schwarzenegger got first dibs on getting as close as close can get on the car.

BMW M1 rumored to make return in 2012

The overwhelmingly positive response of the ‘Jetsons-esque’ Vision EfficientDynamics may have given BMW the shot in the arm it has long waited for.

Due to the glorious feedback generated by the concept car, BMW is not tinkering with the idea of bringing back the M1 by 2012 where it would be based on the 2+2 coupe concept of the Vision EfficientDynamics.

The rumoured M1 will also come with the same hybrid powertrain that comes with the Vision EfficientDynamics concept, a sign that BMW may be more serious than anyone ever thought about the its efforts in becoming more eco-friendly.

In the event that it does use the hybrid powertrain, the M1 will be expected to carry a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that comes with an electric motor. The power output expected to come out of this set-up is expected to reach as much as 350 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque.

As far as aesthetics are concerned, we’re not expecting the M1 to look remotely close to that of the Vision EfficientDynamics concept, although we are anticipating that BMW will take a few styling cues from the concept and adapt it to the M1. After all, what’s the point of basing the car to the concept if it won’t have any resemblance to it?

In any event, if this supposed reincarnation of the M1 is all BMW says it would be, then we can expect it to generate the same type of reaction the Vision EfficientDynamics concept got in Frankfurt. And that’s going to be great news for the boys of BMW.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics officially unveiled at Frankfurt preview event

Ladies and gentlemen, Frankfurt has arrived!

In what is being expected as one of the most star-studded Frankfurt Motor Shows in recent years, BMW threw the first salvo by officially unveiling its Vision EfficientDynamics hybrid super car in one of Frankfurt’s first preview events.

Leading the unveiling was BMW chairman and CEO Dr. Robert Reithofer who commented that the new super car boasts of one of the world’s most technically advanced engines and body construction technology.

The car is by all means everything we’ve been talking about for the past couple of months. It’s got the 2+2 seat configuration and is powered by a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo diesel hybrid making it capable of churning our as much as 356 horsepower. The car clocked impressive times in its’ 0-100 kmh test time, clocking in at just around 4.8 seconds – a jaw dropping number considering the car’ average fuel consumption reads at only 3.76-L/100km.

Although the car seems to be impressive in every aspect, Reithofer did put in a word of caution, saying that the Vision EfficientDynamics is far from a finished product and BMW is still looking at other means by which improve the car’s efficiency down the road.
