BMW X6

The BMW X6 is a four-passenger luxury crossover or "sports activity coupe" as BMW likes to call it. It went on sale in the second quarter of 2008 with a promise of combining the benefits of an SUV and a coupe into one convenient little package. The current X6 is powered by a plethora of engine options. The first is a 3.0L twin turbo engine producing 300/320hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. The second engine is a 4.4L twin turbo V8 delivering 400/440hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. The 4.4L V8/electric hybrid option pushes out 480 net ho and 575 net lb-ft of torque, while on the opposite side of the spectrum is the 4.4L twin turbo V8 that gets 555hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. These engines are mated to a six-speed automatic, continuously variable transmission.

BMW continues to jump across different mainstreams in yet another marketing effort to promote their vehicles.

A week after we reported about the BMW X5 ’s ‘star billing’ in the soon-to-be-released movie, “The Ghost Writer”, BMW is jumping on another marketing platform onto the Black Eyed Peas’ latest music video, “Imma Be Rocking That Body”.

Two BMW vehicles – the BMW Superbike, S1000RR, and the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 – make an appearance in the rather futuristic music video. While they don’t play as prominent a role as the X5 does in the movie “The Ghost Writer”, the cameos of both the ActiveHybrid X6 and the S1000RR has served as pretty good advertising for BMW, especially in YouTube, where the video currently has over 800,000 hits already.

Check it out and add to that total.

A special BMW X6 will make its debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show: a X6 with wide range of products from BMW Performance. The BMW Performance Aerodynamics Kit for the BMW X6 BMW X6 includes: front bumper, side-sills and an insert for the rear bumper, all in special design and all finished in body color and can be extended to a rear spoiler, rear fins in matte black and a front grid finished in high-gloss black paint. There is also a set of 21" light-alloy wheels.

Also, thanks to the new BMW Performance Power Kit the maximum output of the V8 engine can be raised by 41 hp to a total of 448 hp. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph is also improved by 0.2 seconds.

The new BMW X6 with Performance Aerodynamics Kit will be available stating June 2010.

Press release after the jump.

Aside from the German tuning firm Hamann , the fellow Bavarian automotive restyling experts at Lumma Design are the second tuners scheduled to unveil an appearance package for the high horsepower BMW X6 M . Called CLR X650 M, the kitted sport activity vehicle will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show wearing a set of bold bumpers, aggressive side skirts and a more pronounced rear spoiler while riding on a set of oversized alloys measuring 23 inches in diameter.

The twin turbocharged 4.4 Liter V8 engine has been tweaked to produce a total of 650 HP and can now sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in 4.5 seconds and reach a ridiculous 194 MPH top speed.

UPDATE 06/22/2010: Check out what happens when Lumma Design partners together with TopCar by checking out the Lumma CLR X650 M’s photo session in a beautiful Monte Carlo Blue. Photos after the jump!

Stay tuned for more details!

Hamann MotorSport revealed a new customization program for the BMW X6 M . The exterior kit includes a new front bumper with LED daytime running lamps, central rear muffler, small rear spoiler, fiberglass roof spoiler and 23" Ultra-light forged 3-piece alloy wheels.

As for the engine, thanks to a recalibration of standard ECU the total output has been raised to 610 HP at 6000 RPM (up from a standard 555 HP) and the peak torque to 780 Nm at 1500 - 5650 RPM (up from 680 Nm). The top speed has also been increased to 180 MPH.

And if this is not enough for you, Hamann can go even further. With the addition of Sport high-performance catalysts, intermediate pipe with x-venturi, sport rear muffler with 4 tailpipes and optimized curve maps the output can be raised to 670 HP and the peak torque to 850 Nm from 1,500 - 5,650 RPM. In this case the X6 M’s top speed is 183 MPH.

Aside from the aftermarket manufacturer G-Power , the German tuning firm Hartge has taken a crack at improving upon the BMW X6 M ’s greatness. Acknowledging the fact that BMW’s design team knew what they were doing at the drafting table, the bimmer specialists at Hartge made only a few minor changes to the sport activity vehicle’s exterior and chose to focus on improving the X6’s interior in order to provide their clients with a much more personalized driving experience.

The biggest add on to the X6 M’s exterior are the new stylish Hartge design alloy wheels measuring a massive 22 inches in diameter mounted at all four corners and some select Hartge badging for identification purposes. The rollers are available in a variety of paint choices that include almost every factory body color as well as the option of matte, glossy or brilliant finishes. On the inside Hartge pulled out all the stops starting with a complete carbon fiber trim kit that covers the dash, center console and even the steering wheel.

The lightweight black stuff is followed by more lightweight aluminum, milled from solid chunks these become a tasteful trio of pedals including the ever so important dead pedal. As far as the soft stuff is concerned, Hartge has included a set of black velour floor mats to spruce up the interior along with matching inserts in the leather seats so that the occupants stay in place when going around the tightest of turns. Overall, Hartge’s approach to the M powered X6 is subtle made up of only a few key components, but this is one instance where we can say that the end result is worth much more than just the sum of its parts.

We can’t think of anything more appropriate than a German tuner turning a few wrenches on one of Germany’s most powerful people movers. As they comes from the factory, the X5 M and X6 M models roar like muscle cars, so when G-Power gets done with them you can only image what the end product is like. However the high performance specialists focused on more then just upping the fastback sport activity vehicle’s output, that is why they started off with one of their wide body Typhoon body kits to get the ball rolling.

G-POWER X5 M and X6 M TYPHOON

The first thing that G-Power modified was the 4.4 Liter Biturbo’s engine electronics that not only removes the factory set 155 MPH top speed limiter, but also increases the motor sport inspired SAV all the way up to 600 HP and 516 lb-ft of torque. This allows the G-Powered X5 and X6 M to sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in just 4.5 seconds and reach a terminal velocity of 186 MPH. Aside from the ultra aggressive front bumper from the Typhoon kit, the exterior is dressed up with a carbon fiber front spoiler with integrated oversized air inlets, lower hanging side skirts and of course a set of G-Power Silverstone Editionaluminum alloys measuring 23 inches in diameter.

The BMW tuners at Lumma Design go to extreme lengths in order to please their customers, a little while ago they came out with the CLR X 650 kit for the BMW X6 sport activity vehicle. The massive bodykit broadens the SAV by about three inches on each side thanks to a set of wide body fenders from and back, the hood is vented and made from lightweight carbon fiber, the front bumper has been given a more aggressive treatment with larger openings and LED driving lights while an individualized rear bumper spruces things up out back complete with carbon diffuser. However this particular Russian customer wanted something a little different, instead of the typical gleaming white X6, they requested for a more intimidating flat black version and boy does it look impressive, especially riding on those massive 23 inch mesh spoke matte black rims.

BMW is the only automaker that can successfully come up with market segments and then serve them to customers who are more than eager to gobble them up. The German automakers latest creation is the BMW X6 SAV, or sports activity vehicle, now this differs from ordinary SUVs because instead of being a storage box on wheels an active lifestyle calls for truck like ground clearance combined with a fastback roofline and room for four, even though it still has the same footprint as a full sized sport utility vehicle. This sounds perfect for the American market.

2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 U.S. pricing announced

Despite the questionable nature of this fresh design, BMW is pushing the niche appeal of their luxury vehicle to the next level with a BMW X6 ActiveHybrid version and it will only cost consumers $89,775. Not bad considering that you will be able to counter any SUV protesters by informing them of your X6’s gas/electric hybrid drivetrain and then turn around and tell your muscle car friends about the BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology V8 and that you are laying down 485 HP and 575 lb-ft of torque to the pavement, just make sure that both conversations don’t coincide.

With the release of the new BMW X1 , it was only a matter of time before BMW released a new set of family photos featuring the ‘X-Family’ and its latest addition to the clan. As part of a marketing campaign designed to introduce customers to the ‘X-Family’, BMW released these photos showing all four SUVs posing and mugging for the camera. Of course, cars can’t really do that but you get the picture.

While the X1 is of course a new model, BMW doesn’t have plans on redesigning the X5 and the X6 for another few years. The odd one out in this photo is the X3 , which BMW is set to drop by the end of the year to pave way for the next-generation model to be launched sometime in 2010 along with the X4 that is if rumors surrounding the coupe-SUV hybrid become more than just hearsay.

In the meantime, the entry-level SUV title has been transferred to the X1, which incidentally, is already out in the European market.
