BMW X Series

Much has being made about the BMW Concept X5 eDrive following its debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show last year. Shortly after its debut, a prototype was seen testing out on the road. Now, a refreshed version of the concept is headed to the 2014 New York Auto Show .

Whether this is a production model labeled as a concept or simply another prototype is a question that only BMW can answer. For the most part, there have been a few changes from the first concept we saw back in September last year.

What we do know is that there appears to be a future for the Concept X5 eDrive at some point. It may not be in the coming months, but years down the line, we expect this vehicle to be out on the road. The hybrid, luxury SUV market is still growing, and its only a matter of time before BMW jumps into the picture and announces its plans to be a strong competitor in it.

When it comes to the possibility of a BMW X7, we’ve heard all kinds of things. First, there were rumors saying it would be produced and then the rumors were pulled back saying that plans for the X7 had been canceled . Now, we finally have official confirmation of the range-topping X-Series model.

This announcement really came out of left field, and was buried deep in a press release regarding the company’s South Carolina plant. The reason it ended up in this release was because it will be the newest addition to the plant’s workflow in 2016. Despite being built here in the U.S., the X7 will be a part of Bimmer ’s global market, with a lot of the demand coming from the growing Chinese market.

For now, the details are scarce, but there are some assumptions to be made about what engines it will carry and the basic styling.

Updated 03/31/2014: BMW officially confirmed that the future X7 luxury SUV will be produced at the company’s Spartanburg plant stating 2016. "With the BMW X7, we are developing another, larger X model, which we will produce at our U.S. plant for our world markets – once again underscoring our commitment to the U.S."

BMW X4

BMW has become the king of pointless niche-market cars in recent years and it doesn’t look like the Bavarians have any plans of stopping. No they haven’t announced a new 3 Series coupe, but we do have spy shots of the upcoming X4 soft-roader doing a bit of cold-weather romping through the snow.

The X4 is a swoopier version of the X3 much the same way that the X6 was a swoopier version of the X5 . This new, and very pointless, coupe-like SUV is designed to attract young and enthusiastic individuals who want the practicality that comes with an SUV without all that pesky ugliness that comes with having a truly utilitarian vehicle.

In these latest shots, we can see that the car has lost even more of its camo, and we have a nice solid look at the front end. It is pretty clear that the production X4 will look very similar to its concept version , not exactly a surprise.

I think the X4 is a pretty stupid idea, but the Range Rover Evoque has proved that there is a market for small, mostly useless SUVs. Of course the Evoque is supermodel attractive, and the X4 looks like the lump on Quasimodo’s back, so that may make a difference in when it goes on sale.

BMW announced today that its venerable X3 SUV is getting a much-needed upgrade. BMW is blowing open the new 2015 BMW X3 SUV by offering it with multiple U.S.-market firsts. Most notably, you can now get the X3 with diesel power, and there is now a model without all-wheel drive.

The availability of the rear-wheel-drive model helps bring the price of the X3 down into a new market, and the diesel engine option provides a level of fuel economy that far exceeds any of the previous X3 models.

As expected with any major update, the designs of the interior and exterior have been updated and overall equipment levels have increased.

Is the new 2015 BMW X3 the best luxury SUV money can buy, or does BMW need to make more substantial changes to make the model worth looking at?

BMW X1

Like numerous other automakers around the world, BMW is knee deep in ice and snow, as it is testing its upcoming models in wintery weather. This time around it was the 2016 X1 that our spy photographers caught cruising in the snow. The model was caught testing today somewhere in Sweden and, judging by the heavy camouflage it’s wearing, it looks like BMW engineers still have lots of work to do.

The X1 will be built on the company’s new front-wheel-drive platform (UKL) that will also underpins the new Mini and will be under the new 1 Series Active Tourer. This new platform will give BMW BMW the ability to offer more space in the new X1, as well as reduced production cost. Front-wheel drive will be standard on the X1, but BMW will offer all-wheel drive on models with more powerful engines.

Under its hood, BMW will offer the same engine as in the current model, but with modifications lower fuel consumption.

Expect a debut in September 2015 as a 2016 model.

BMW X2

The folks over at BMW Blog report that sources close to German magazine Autobild say BMW’s got a couple new SUVs planned for the near future. Coming out first is the new two-door X2 scheduled for shipment in 2016. It’s said to be based on the UKL front-drive platform that will also underpin the second-generation X1 .

BMW Blog says the X2 will also share the X1’s powertrain lineup that includes a three- and four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. Keep in mind, the diesels will likely stay in Europe if or when they debut. A hybrid variant may well be on the drawing board as well. We suspect a hybrid X2 would make a highly respectable option for inner city customers looking to make a statement while cutting fuel costs.

Less is known about the possible X7 SUV . This is not the first time BMW Blog has reported on an X7 as they covered its initial media leak and then purported demise, as BMW supposedly didn’t feel the need for a large full-size SUV at the time. The magazine does however dive into the possibility of three different plug-in hybrid systems for all X Series models. Included is a three-cylinder offered in front-wheel-drive only; a four-cylinder engine offered in rear-drive X3 and X4 models; and a six-cylinder offered in four-wheel drive for the X5,X6, and possible X7. BMW X4

The striptease is on folks, and the X4 is on center stage showing off its sides, as it starts losing some camouflage. That’s right, our spy photographers caught the new BMW X4, X5 and X6 parked at the Nϋrburgring raceway, and it is wearing less camo than the last time we saw it.

Though this doesn’t reveal much about what’s going on out back — the part that really matters on this sweet-looking crossover coupe — it does give us an idea of the styling we can expect from the profile view. The side features a rising shoulder-line that seems to connect the front and rear door handles. We can also see that the lower parts of the doors have a nice scallop to them, helping add some sportiness to the upcoming addition to Bimmers lineup.

The front and rear ends are still under cover, but thanks to the earlier unveiled X4 concept, we know that this model will feature the new BMW face — to-the-grille headlights and the slightly forward-leaning kidney grille — unlike the recently shown 2 Series .

The only detail that we have on the back that the X4 will feature a large cargo hatch , like the X6.

The drivetrain lineup is still a mystery, but we assume that it will start out with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder with 240 horsepower, and the top trim levels will likely carry a 3.0-liter, in-line six-cylinder that starts around 300 horsepower and moves up from there.

BMW X1

Rumors have been circulating about a the next-gen BMW X1 for quite some time now, but this is the first time we’ve caught one in the wild. Internally called F48, the next X1 was spied while being transported between two different test facilities in Germany on the back of a flatbed tow truck, so we still have yet to catch one in action.

The 2015 X1 will be built on BMW’s new front-wheel-drive platform, which is known as the UKL (German for "Unter Klasse" or "entry level"), and that same platform will see use on the new Mini and the upcoming 1 Series GT.

The new front-wheel-drive platform gives BMW the ability to offer more space in the upcoming X1,and reduce production cost. Though the X1 will come standard with front-wheel drive, BMW will offer all-wheel drive with the X1’s upper-level engines.

Expect the new BMW X1 to arrive late in 2015.

Back when we first received details on the new X5 M50d, they were all still in their preliminary phase, and now BMW has finally unveiled all of the official information on its resident diesel crossover .

As no surprise, this diesel X5 will be offered with the same upgrades as the standard X5, including a new front and rear fascia, a new set of headlights and an updated interior.

The new X5 M50d will also carry a three-stage turbocharged 3.0-liter powerplant that is set to send plenty of horsepower and amazing torque through an eight-speed automatic box and out to all four wheels. This accounts for a 0-to-100 km/h (62 mph) time of under 6 seconds and fuel economy that will blow the doors off of many gasoline-powered economy cars.

The bad news is that to date, there is no mention of the new BMW X5 M50d coming to the U.S. market, hence it being a 2013 model year instead of a 2014.

BMW revealed the concept X5 eDrive today ahead of its public debut at next month’s Frankfurt Auto Show . This BMW -developed plug-in hybrid powertrain looks quite promising: it maintains the xDrive AWD system’s torque split ability to all four wheels even when running in hybrid or full electric mode.

Cabin space is said to be only marginally trimmed from the advanced Li-ion battery pack under the rear cargo tray area - but the real headline is a sprint time that is still under 7 seconds and an all-electric cruising range of 19 miles at speeds up to 75 mph.

This BMW eDrive concept is the second time a plug-in hybrid has emerged from Munich — the first being 2012’s Active Tourer — a front-drive MPV heading for launch in a few years.

Of course, BMW’s i brand also has some striking electrified models waiting in the wings with the i8 and i3 - both of which are scheduled for big launch news during the company’s Frankfurt press conferences.

The concept X5 eDrive tests the mood for a future plug-in hybrid luxury SUV, but brings numerous technological advancements so far unseen from the smash-hit Lexus RX450h and supercharged seven-seat 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid . As currently planned, the X5 eDrive will lag behind the main models to market by about a year - for a projected late fall 2014 arrival in American showrooms.
