2012 - 2013 BMW 1 Series

BMW is set to unveil the facelift version of the 1 Series , both coupe and convertible, at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, but before the drapes fall, BMW has decided to offer the first details on the new models just a few weeks earlier.

For the 2012 model year, the 1 Series has received carefully selected design modifications, optimized aerodynamics, and attractive equipment features. What we don’t know about yet is the engine lineup, but we assume that it will be coming in the same setup as before. The only modifications that may be made are for the 135i, which will see its 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine dropped in favor of a twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine.

For the interior, the standard version now includes a wide range of features that further reinforce the strong sense of quality and refinement. The interior trim strip range has been revised and now includes an Alpine White version.

Exterior and Interior

BMW 1 Series

For the exterior, the 1-Series Coupe receives a restyled front apron, a black trim strip enhancing the central under-bumper air intake, apron-integrated fog-lamps, and new vertical air intakes. Resized vertical ventilation slits in the front apron channel air into the wheel arches.

The most important changes on the exterior, however, are the restyled and more attractive headlights and rear lights. The L-shaped rear light cluster now features a new, all-red housing, while xenon headlights receive integrated LED accent lights.

Also, new for the 2012 model year are two new exterior colors: Vermilion Red and Marrakesh Brown. The exterior changes are rounded off with new 17-inch alloy wheels in star-spoke and Streamline styling, and 18-inch V-spoke alloy wheels with mixed tires.

The interior gets a sports leather steering wheel with shift paddles and an M leather steering wheel plus a new range of seat upholstery and decorative trim.

BMW 1 Series

The 2012 1 Series comes in only two formats: 128i and 135i. The former gets a 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 230 horsepower. This engine hooks up to a six-speed manual transmission standard, but you can opt for a six-speed automatic transmission. With the manual transmission, the 128i hits 60 mph in 5.9 seconds in coupe form and the convertible hits 60 in 6.7 seconds.

The 2012 135i receives TwinPower Turbo Technology to tune the 3.0-liter engine to 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The standard transmission is a six-speed manual and the optional transmission is a seven-speed automated manual, dubbed the DCT. The manual-equipped 135i hits 60 mph in 5 seconds and the DCT takes 6.2 seconds to hit 60 in coupe form. The convertible model with a manual hits 60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

In 2013, the 135is took the place of the 1M with its 3.0-liter engine tuned to 320 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. In coupe form, the 135is hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with a manual transmission – the standard transmission – and the seven-speed automatic transmission does the same in 4.8 seconds. The convertible version hits 60 mph in 5.2 seconds with the manual transmission and 5.1 seconds with the automatic.

BMW 1 Series

The new BMW 1-Series joins some stiff competition on the market with the Audi TT - also offered in both coupe and convertible - and the Infiniti G37 offered in two distinctive versions.

While the Infiniti G is mostly offered for customers looking for luxury, the real battle will be between the 1-Series and the TT. Both models are sporty and offer the same amount of interior convenience. However, the TT is considered a girly car, while the 1-Series looks much more aggressive. We guess it comes down to customer preference.

BMW 1 Series

Outstanding efficiency and sporty driving enjoyment are hallmarks of the BMW 1 Series Coupe and the BMW 1 Series Convertible premium compact-class models. These two-door BMW 1 Series models will be adding to their sporty and elegant appeal in model year 2011 with some carefully selected design modifications, optimised aerodynamics and attractive equipment features. A restyled front apron now showcases the typical BMW personality even more effectively. The central under-bumper air intake is strikingly enhanced by a black trim strip, and the sporty theme continues with the apron-integrated foglamps and the new vertical air intakes, which are mounted well to the outside.

The resized vertical ventilation slits in the front apron channel air into the wheel arches to create a kind of "air curtain" or aerodynamic screening effect across the face of the front wheels, which significantly reduces drag in this area. The Air Curtain is a further step in BMW’s pioneering EfficientDynamics programme. In combination with Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start- Stop function, the gear shift indicator and on-demand control of auxiliary units, it has a further positive impact on fuel consumption and emissions.

New accents on the lighting front: bold and instantly recognizable.

Both the new BMW 1 Series Coupe and the new BMW 1 Series Convertible come with restyled and even more attractive headlights and rear lights. The detailed reworking of the main headlight unit is further enhanced by an accent strip which runs across the top of the twin headlights. The L-shaped rear light cluster, which now features a new, all-red housing, makes a particularly powerful statement, while xenon headlights with integrated LED accent lights (daytime running lights) and LED strips in the rear lights create the typical, instantly identifiable BMW night-time look.

Further fresh new touches are added by the extended range of exterior paintwork colours and wheel styles. Two bright metallic paintwork colours - Vermilion Red and Marrakesh Brown - add to the exclusive appeal of the BMW 1 Series Coupe and BMW 1 Series Convertible. New 17-inch alloy wheels in star-spoke and Streamline styling, and 18-inch V-spoke alloy wheels with mixed tyres, highlight the distinctive character of these two models, which also happen to be the only rear-wheel-drive cars in the compact segment. Even the entry-level BMW 1 Series Convertible 118i will now run on 16-inch V-spoke alloy wheels as standard.

New upholstery: improved interior customization.

The sporty and exclusive interior feel has been further heightened by new, carefully coordinated interior trim features. The range of seat upholstery and decorative trim features has been extensively revised. The new upholstery options for the BMW 1 Series Coupe and BMW 1 Series Convertible comprise "Network" fabric upholstery in Magma Brown, and Oyster or Savanna Beige "Boston" leather. Other new interior options are a sports leather steering wheel with shift paddles and an M leather steering wheel, again with shift paddles.

On all models, regardless of specification, BMW has now improved the markings on the DSC button in the instrument panel by replacing the letters DSC (Dynamic Stability control) with a new international symbol. On all BMW 1 Series Coupe and BMW 1 Series Convertible models, the standard-version interior now includes a wide range of features that further reinforce the strong sense of quality and refinement. For example, the light control centre and the climate control panel in the centre console now feature elegant chrome edging. The interior trim strip range has been revised and now includes an Alpine White version.


BMW 1-series coupe is impressive in its decent appearance, and I love the fact that it is a convertible car. The interior seems so cozy and relaxing either which I love the most here in this kind of car.

I simply impressed with the decent appearance of this 1-series coupe and convertible of BMW, though I found that the exterior is so simple and ordinary. 300 horsepower is I think quite good enough for it.

I really hate a facelift version for its a version wherein car manufacturer tends to modify and upgrade the car that is slightly a minor issue. And later on they instantly say that it a new model! What a waste!

I actually checked on its prices and it is quite expensive. I have to call the sales department if they have any special discounts to offer.

I have to admit that it looks good in red . And hey guys! Of course everybody wants a young and fresh styling for their car and can perform well in the road. Well, I would say that this is the era wherein vintage cars should be put in the museumsmiley

This car looks so edgy for me. And I think it would be better to choose the 6 cylinder option. The diesel option is kind of less powerful. However, when it comes to the styling of this car this one is a big winner!

Totally agree with you, Caden. BMW must produce an individual program on each cars. Although its worth buying, we must also consider the financial situation of the consumers today.

The 6c inline turbo can deliver a lot of pure driving experience with a little fine tune you can reach easy more them 400 hp at compact hatchback. Tell me which model out there will be up to the task? The new Audi RS3? noway!

The BMW 1 Series M Couple is a clear message that BMW M Power wants to get young people to refresh the brand. People that want a M sport car before 40 age and not at 60 years old.
I am exciting to see the new BMW 1 series M Hatchback and not the couple in 2013 model.

Half way between a 135 and an M3 is: $48.1k base. I’d reckon, BMW will shave 1.5k off that and predict starting price at $46.5k base, with premium pkg say $48k. Would I buy it? Nope. Learned my lesson with the 335 hp. But, I’d consider leasing one! smiley

The current one (E9x) or the previous E46?I seriously doubt BMW would make any 1 series that will beat the current M3. That would be too cool, and go against their stubborn love of hierarchical rank.

Funny how the 2007 335 was clocked in at 4.8-4.9 seconds and then afterward all the mags and reviews couldn’t get that number anymore. I had a 2007 and when they did an update to the software they killed the boost and you felt the power difference. If that car with 350hp can’t get under 5 seconds when BMW lists the heavier 335 with 300 @ 5.2 seconds then something is wrong.

I think when they get production version and put it thru all the tests they wont be as happy as they are now. Why is this not the 135is?also i think they could have gone with 18in wheels and lowered it more. Looking at the last pic the wheels don’t seem to fit this "sports" car.

I think it needs some BMW Individual program. The price is right but with a few options it will probably easily reach over €60,000. Anyway great car, worth buying.

Great car. It will be a great fun to own one and rather well investment. Only three colors a bit boring, and the interior color showed on the photos is rather sad.

The fastest model remains the 135i equipped with the dual clutch transmission, covering the 0-60 mph dash in a scorching 5.0 seconds.

I agree wholeheartedly. The convertible is considerably less abominable. I’d actually consider letting a lady-friend drive one. If she were particularly gifted in other respects, that is.

yes I’ve driven the m1 last night.. it handles well, very accurate and response quickly, the suspension is perfect and un comparable, acceleration is good but not better than m3.

it looks like they recycled the old m1’s headlamps and shortened the wheelbase. but it looks kinda fun to drive specially when you reach the topspeed of this car.
