BMW->ke178 has added a new entry-level model to its 3-Series->ke290 lineup and it has debuted it at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. That’s right, the 320i returns yet again…

The new 320i brings back the tradition of Bimmer using the engine size in the model numerals, as the new entry-level model boasts a 2.0-liter four-banger. With BMW now excelling with advanced twin-scroll turbocharger technology, we expect this model to be a top performer in its class – both in speed and efficiency. The 320i will sit just below the current base model, the 328i, meaning we expect it to come in well below that models $36,850 base price.

As is typical for BMW, it can’t just offer up one base model and leave it at that, so it is also offering up a 320i xDrive model, which will feature BMW’s famed all-wheel-drive system. We also anticipate a slew of optional features and packages to come along for the ride, making the entry-level 3-Series even more desirable.

The real test is whether the 320i can stick around this time or if it will disappear yet again.

Exterior and Interior

On both the exterior and interior, the new 320i will be offered with the usual 3-Series design elements. You will notice the slightly forward-slanting BMW kidney grille and the LED accent lights positioned like eyebrows above the striking twin headlights.

The sporty appearance of the 320i can be further accentuated with a new Sport Package that will add a set of 18-inch light-alloy wheels with summer tires and increased top speed limiter, sport seats, M sport suspension, M steering wheel and an anthracite headliner. If customers want to further customize their 320i, BMW is also offering four additional packages: Cold Weather Package, Premium Package, Driver Assistance Package, and Lighting Package.

Engine

The new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivers a total of 180 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 200 pound-feet of torque from 1,250 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The car will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.1 seconds and will hit a top speed of 130 mph. The engine will mate to an incredibly flexible eight-speed automatic transmission or to a six-speed manual unit. For the 320i xDrive version, BMW is offering an intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

The base model will get a very respectable 22 mpg city and 34 mpg on the highway and the eight-speed model will get 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. The xDrive model will also turn in a high-for-an-AWD-model 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

The model will also be equipped with Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration and a Driving Dynamics Control switch, which allows the driver to choose between Comfort, Sport, and ECO PRO driving modes.

The model will go on sale in late-Spring 2013 at a price of $35,445 (including $895 Destination & Handling).

Competitors

The new BMW 320i will target entry level models from the Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4->ke1087 lineup. For example, the entry level A4 is being powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged with intercooler, DOHC in-line four-cylinder gasoline engine with an output of 211 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The extra power makes the A4 a little bit faster as it sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds, but top speed is also limited to 130 mph.

The C-Class is preparing to enter a new generation and Mercedes announced it will also be working on smaller engines that will improve fuel economy.
