2013 BMW Vision Gran Turismo

BMW has unveiled a new concept car. Normally, we’d be really excited to see it once it makes its debut in a major auto show and you would’ve thought that with the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show just around the corner, this concept would be one of the main attractions, right?

Unfortunately, that won’t be the case because the BMW Vision Gran Turismo — that’s its name, by the way — will only appear as a virtual concept in Gran Turismo 6.

Here’s the thing, though. Once we washed away the disappointment of not seeing the Vision Gran Turismo in real-scale, we couldn’t help but get even more excited about the release of GT6, not only because of its incredible playability, but because of the rash of new features it’s going to come with.

The BMW Vision Gran Turismo is one of them and by the looks of how it was designed, the dynamic sports coupé’s combination of BMW’s unmistakable racing genes with the design freedom that you can have on a virtual car has given birth to a concept that goes beyond even our already bloated expectations.

But the best part about the unveiling of the BMW Vision Gran Turismo is that this concept won’t be the only one that will be prominently featured in Gran Turismo 6. Expect to see even more concepts from some of the biggest automakers and design houses in the world, a lot of whom will create their own unique concepts that will be exclusively used in the game as part of Gran Turismo’s "Vision Gran Turismo" initiative.

You don’t even have to be a BMW fan to appreciate how big this project is going to be. The BMW Vision Vision Gran Turismo is only the beginning and more concepts will be unveiled from 2013 to 2014 as gifted downloadable content (DLC) to owners of Gran Turismo 6 through online updates.

Talk about raising the stakes. Your move, Forza.

BMW Group Design creates an exclusive concept car for the Gran Turismo®6 video game

BMW Vision Gran Turismo

Munich. 15 years on from the launch of the celebrated Gran Turismo gaming franchise for PlayStation®, BMW Group Design has conjured up a futuristic virtual concept car exclusively for Gran Turismo 6; the BMW Vision Gran Turismo will make its virtual debut in this latest incarnation of the racing simulation. The dynamic sports coupé blends BMW’s unmistakable racing genes with the design freedom inherent in a virtual car and was created uniquely for the game. Aerodynamic elements derived from the BMW Group’s real-life experience on the race track are the key to blistering lap times, unbeatable handling and fingertip control.

“Gran Turismo and BMW share a genetic passion for cars – both modern and classic,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “I’ve followed this racing game franchise from its beginnings and am extremely excited about the increased visual realism of Gran Turismo 6 and its incredibly authentic driving experience.”

The creation of the BMW Vision Gran Turismo sees BMW underlining its ongoing involvement in the gaming sphere. The increasing prominence of the video game market – with its active gaming community – allows concepts like the BMW Vision Gran Turismo, as well as classic and current BMW models, not only to be viewed passively as images or trailers, but also to be experienced and driven interactively by millions of people.

“Vision Gran Turismo offers an impressively creative platform for the innovative presentation of the BMW Design vision developed exclusively for the game,” explains Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Vice President Brand Communication BMW. “We look forward to receiving the feedback of the global community. The BMW Vision Gran Turismo is our way of congratulating Polyphony and Sony on the 15th anniversary of the Gran Turismo franchise.”

Sony likewise expressed its enthusiasm for the collaboration: “I was really impressed by the amount of thought BMW put in, for not only surface features of a car but their consideration for internal structures and mechanical components as well. I respect their sincere efforts and I am very much looking forward to the BMW Vision Gran Turismo,” said Kazunori Yamauchi, Producer Gran Turismo, President Polyphony Digital Inc. and Senior Vice President Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “I have immense respect for what’s been achieved here and am very much looking forward to the arrival of the BMW Vision Gran Turismo.”

The award-winning Gran Turismo® racing simulation game was first released in 1998. Its extensive line-up of true-to-life circuit reproductions, authentic cars and outstanding HD graphics make it the perfect partner for the BMW Group. Once the design process is complete, the BMW Vision Gran Turismo will make its appearance in the game.

Polyphony Digital Inc., creator of PlayStation®’s best-selling Gran Turismo® franchise, has announced a unique partnership with a number of leading automotive manufacturers, design houses and other leading global brands. Design teams from Alfa Romeo, Alpine, Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Bertone, GM Design, Honda, Infiniti, Italdesign Giugiaro, JORDAN Brand, Mercedes-Benz, Nike, Nissan, Peugeot, SRT(Chrysler), Volkswagen and Zagato will create concept models giving a unique insight into the future of the automotive sector. Their designs will then be recreated as working cars for the new Gran Turismo®6 game due for release on 6th December, 2013. The initiative celebrates 15 years of the 70-million-selling franchise and is known as "Vision Gran Turismo".

Vision Gran Turismo will include cars such as the BMW Vision Gran Turismo, an exclusive virtual concept derived from the BMW M genes. Volkswagen gave free rein to their designers to explore the future of the iconic Golf GTI with the Golf GTI Vision Gran Turismo. The Alfa Romeo 6C Biposto Vision Gran Turismo, created by the team responsible for the Alfa Romeo 4C, will celebrate an iconic model from the 1930’s. A bold glimpse into the future, the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo unites sensual purity with classic Mercedes-Benz design elements. Nike makes an intriguing foray into automotive design, following the company’s collaboration with Polyphony Digital Inc. on the design of the revolutionary concept vehicle, Nike ONE for Gran Turismo 4.

The cars will be released by Polyphony Digital from 2013 to 2014 as gifted downloadable content (DLC) to owners of Gran Turismo 6 through online update. Vision Gran Turismo has been developed as a ‘thank you’ to the franchise’s loyal fan base for its successful 15-year history.

“This is a very exciting project,” explained legendary Gran Turismo creator and President of Polyphony Digital Inc. Kazunori Yamauchi. “Ever since we released the first Gran Turismo game 15 years ago, GT has resonated with the automotive world and we have enjoyed many different and fascinating collaborations. But Vision Gran Turismo is probably our most ambitious to date. It promises to provide a window into the future of automotive design that we can bring to life in Gran Turismo 6. We are extremely grateful to all of our design partners in this project for their amazing birthday present to Gran Turismo to celebrate the franchise’s 15 year anniversary, and are so excited to share this gift with our fans. Working closely with the leading lights of automotive design, as well as some design teams from outside of the industry, has been a rare privilege and we look forward to sharing their creations with fans of Gran Turismo from this year through to 2014”.

The team at Polyphony Digital has a long history of innovative partnerships with manufacturers that underlines the breadth and depth of "the real driving simulator". Fascinating co-operations to date have included the Red Bull X2010 ultimate race car, GTbyCitroën concept, an innovative new GPS and data app developed for the Toyota GT86, and partnerships with Nissan that include Polyphony designing a display for the real Nissan GT-R and the highly-successful GT Academy virtual-to-reality racing driver development competition.

Gran Turismo 6 will be released on 6th December, 2013. The game is already available for pre-order through a number of retailers. Those pre-ordering the GT6 Anniversary Edition or the standard edition will receive a number of additional cars when the game is released.
