After being caught testing in many times, the revised BMW 5-Series lineup->ke317 made its world debut today before being put on sale later in July. As no surprise, BMW->ke178 is offering no major updates on the car's exterior and look, but it did added a new model to the lineup: the 518d, plus a more powerful V-8 powertrain.

In terms of design the 5-Series sedan received different structured lower air intakes, a modified front apron and more sharply contoured taillights. For the first time the 5-Series is being offered with two new package: BMW Luxury Line and BMW Modern Line packages, both adding exclusive design and equipment features.

For the interior BMW is offering additional chrome trim, more room on the storage compartments, and of course new upholstery colors and interior trim elements.

Exterior

As the current generation BMW 5-Series is on sale just for three years, it was to be expected not to see major updates on this new revision. BMW is only offering additional contour lines for the surround of the kidney grille and newly structured lower air intakes. For the rear, the apron received an extra crease in the apron, while the tail lights are even more striking than before.

As standard features all the models in the 5-Series lineup will offer xenon headlights, while Adaptive LED Headlights are offered as an option. Also, the side indicator lights are integrated into the exterior mirrors.

For the first time the 5-Series can be further customized with two additional packages: BMW Luxury Line and BMW Modern Line.

Interior

Same small revisions are also being offered on the interior where BMW added a chrome trim on the Control Display of the standard-fitted iDrive operating system. Also, the storage compartments and cup holders in the center console have increased in capacity.

Drivetrain

While both the exterior and the interior are not offering any major improvements, BMW kept all the improvements for under the hood.

This way, the 5-Series lineup is now adding a new member to its family: a 518d powered by a four-cylinder diesel with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that delivers a total of 143 horsepower. This version delivers an impressive average fuel economy in the EU test cycle of 62.8 mpg imp and CO2 emissions of 119 gr/km.

Another major update is being offered for the top version, the 550i which received a new V-8 unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that develops a total of 450 horsepower.

All engines are being offered with Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start-Stop function (also fitted in conjunction with the eight-speed automatic gearbox), Optimum Shift Indicator, and the new Proactive Driving Assistant to adjust the car’s speed ahead of a change in speed limit, and the ECO PRO Route function, which can be selected via the optional Navigation system Professional.

Competition

Audi A6

We think there is no need to say that when it comes about the exterior look, the A6 is our favorite model. Still, the 5-Series has the advantage of offering more powerful version for those customers interested in a high-performance luxury sedan.

The Audi A6 comes with a choice of two gasoline engines and three TDI units, with power ranging from 177 to 310 horsepower.

Mercedes E-Class

Mercedes was the first German maker to offer a small revision for its luxury sedan. The E-Class was updated with new headlamps and revised aprons, and for the interior with more premium materials, precise lines and clearly defined surfaces.

Under the hood the E-Class keeps the usual lineup that includes the E350 with its 302-horsepower, V-6 engine or the E500 with its 402-horsepower, V-8 engine and a new E250 BlueTEC powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine with 190 horsepower.

Conclusion

Even if small, the revisions offered for the 5-Series will be just enough to keep the model fresh until the new generation will arrive. Of course, it would have be nice to see some major updates on the car's exterior look, but maybe BMW will decided to finally offer with the new 5-Series.
