2014 BMW Z2 Roadster

Rumors of a smaller roadster known as the BMW Z2, which aims to capture the spirit of the departed BMW Z3 , have been swirling for several years, but nothing ever happened. Well, Autocar has resurrected the rumors and we now have a little bit of unconfirmed information on this potential model. It looks like it is the real deal, but you’ll have to be the judge.

While the Z4 is slowly transitioning into a GT car, the rumored Z2 will be an open-top, entry-level roadster that gives the opportunity for roadster fans to buy one without shelling a small fortune, an aspect that made the Mazda MX-5 Miata legendary.

While BMW is bound to call this car a "Z3 successor," the omission of RWD alone isn’t deserving of that description. Let’s see what BMW has in store for us in this exciting project they may undertake.

Updated 5/12/2014: Car and Driver has brought to our attention that despite a lack of information, the FWD BMW Z2 is very much still alive and projected to hit the market in late 2016. Prices will range from around $30,000 for the base model to as high as $50k for the M variant.

Exterior and Interior

Expected to sit on the ULK platform underpinning nearly 23 Bimmers and Minis, the design is rumored to be inspired by the Concept Active Tourer with a chopped top and a sleeker lines. An idea of how small the BMW Z2 is rumored to be is well depicted in an image of a Mini Cooper Roadster, sans the retro design.

First BMW Z2 Prototype caught testing

Engine

Under the hood, BMW plans to offer the same engine lineup that powers the Mini Mini Cooper Roadster, including the 1.6-liter turbo engine that produces 184 horsepower. Unfortunately, the Z2 will carry BMW BMW ’s new front-wheel-drive system as standard, so some roadster enthusiasts may be disappointed. On the plus side, there will be a top-of-the-range 2.0-liter 4-pot turbo engine that pumps nearly 300-horsepower.

Competition

Rumors say that the future Z2 will target models like the Mazda MX-5 Miata, but we certainly do not see the possibility of the Mazda overtaking this roadster. The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a heavier model with a lot less power under its bloated hood. However, the machine set to power the Z2 is still not 100-percent known so we can’t be sure exactly which vehicle will be set to take on the Z2.

When Can I Get One?

Rumors originally said that we would see the Z2 in the 2013 model year, but that obviously didn’t happen. With the base engine an d chassis already produced, we can safely say that seeing the Z2 in the 2014 or 2015 model year is reasonable. The 300-horsepower, 2.0-liter engine may come later.

Expect the price to be around the $25,000, which is quite competitive in Bimmer terms.

The engine performance is quite impressive for a convertible car and just like their Z9 Spyder this car is really awesome, and I must agree that even they don’t emphasize the design it is already stunning.

This roadster is so different from the other BMW vehicles! Well, it looks better than the other, but I don’t think that 210 horsepower is only good enough for this.

The exclusivity of this Roadster is what I love the most on it, and it looks more elegant on its car lines. I’m just really hoping that they use a boosted engine on it.

The platform design is simple but very appealing that’s why I simply love this convertible car. Roadster had its own snobbish look despite on having a simple look or image.

The side rim of this Roadster really looks so cool with it! Well, the platform and the other detailing of this car absolutely looks perfect and satisfying for me. I will surely wait for the market production of it.

The market production of this Roadster is too long! Anyway, I think it is worth waiting for because of the fact that it is really a good-looking vehicle. However, I’m not satisfied with its engine.

I love the simplicity of this Roadster, and I also noticed that the mileage on it, only adds more appeal and gives the elegant look of it. Anyway, I wonder if what is the interior feature of it?

Z2 Roadster is absolutely looking so awesome on its simple detailing and styling. However, if the competitor of this convertible is Mazda, I don’t think that it will stand out, for the fact that Mazda cars really had a very striking exterior detailing.

I love the side rim of this Roadster even the decency that this car had. It also looks very sophisticated and fabulous on its exterior detailing. Well, I think that this one is so fun to drive with!

I like the simple design that this Roadster had, the appeal that it has is overwhelming. Well it is already striking for me and me either can’t wait for this one.

This Roadster convertible really looks so simple but oozing with car appeal and I found that it had a look of a decency car. It simply stunning on its simple looks.

I agree with Rico Martin, it is already stunning even without lots of design. 2013 is too long but this BMW Z2 Roadster is really worth waiting for.

Z2 Roadster is simply beautiful even without lots of designs it is still appealing on its own way. I can’t wait for the production version of this. 2013 is too long for us.

It seems that everyone is impressed with this concept. I can’t blame them. This concept is really impressive. It has a sophisticated look.

Definitely one of the models that I a m looking forward to from BMW. From the moment that I saw the first photos of the Z2, I already knew that this is going to be one heck of a car.

Although I’m a big fan of BMW car I will not to consider to buy one of this. I bet the hard roof top affects the performance of this car. I really don’t think that a 250 hp is a good power output of a sportscar.

Now im thinking I should took a degree on mechanical or electrical engineering instead of computer engineering, looking at this car, I should have been designing one that everyone would want to have and become an envy to others.

Don’t forget guys that’s its still a concept car and I don’t think that it be best option until on its debut on 2012. I bet there are a lot better that is out in the market.
