Buick->ke17 unveiled the first Riviera Concept at the 2007 Auto Shanghai. Now, six years later, the company is using the same show to unveil a second version of the concept that, according to the company, "offers a preview of Buick’s future design language."

While it’s pretty obvious the concept's exterior design won't make it to production in its entirety, the second version of the Riviera Concept features a low, sporty and futuristic look. The concept offers an updated version of Buick's waterfall grille and wing-shaped daytime running lights - both elements are said to be used in future Buick models.

The concept unveiled in Shanghai->ke2470 is coated in an ice celadon finish that is inspired by jade and features unique gull-wing doors.

The most important part of the concept is that is powered by an all-new, dual-mode W-PHEV (wireless plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) propulsion system that allows the vehicle to be charged wirelessly via a sensory recharge panel on the car's chassis.

Pros
Cons

Exterior

The Riviera's new design language is inspired by the Chinese saying: "The greatest good is like water." The concept's elegant lines are inspired by the vibrant nature of a moving river, which is highlighted by a new version of Buick's famous waterfall grille. The Riviera’s wing-shaped daytime running lights will also make their way into the future Buick models.

When compared to the first Riviera concept, the one revealed this year features a raked windshield, 14-degree fastback design, a metallic-fiber spoiler, active grille shutters and diffusers, and active pneumatic wheels. The concept is painted an ice celadon finish inspired by jade and is equipped with unique gull-wing doors.

Interior

For the interior, Buick used refined materials, such as sand-blasted aluminum alloy, lava suede and ebony. The new Riviera features a well-structured center console, front floating seats and adaptive seating system.

For the new concept, Buick also developed an innovative mobile Internet system that supports high-speed 4G LTE network use. With the help of this innovative feature, the concept can provide real-time traffic information, weather updates, and news and entertainment while communicating with other vehicles.

Drivetrain

Under the hood of the new Riviera concept, Buick placed GM's all-new, dual-mode W-PHEV (wireless plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) propulsion system that allows the car to be recharged with a traditional cable or wireless via a sensory recharge panel on the car's chassis.

When can I drive one?

Buick's decision to offer a new Riviera concept shouldn't be a big surprise, especially if you consider that last year GM trademarked the Riviera name. Additionally, do not be surprised to see the name return to GM’s lineup, sans this ultra-modern body and propulsion system.

Competition

2013 BMW 3-Series

While the Riviera concept is a two-door vehicle, we expect the production version to be offered in a traditional four-door layout. We expect the production version to aim against high-end German sedans.

The BMW 3-Series is one of them. It will be offered with a choice of four engines - two gasoline and two diesel, with power ranging from 163 to 306 horsepower.

2015 Audi A4

By the time the production version Riviera arrives on the market (if it ever arrives), the A4 will have entered a new generation. Rumors suggest it will get a new exterior look and an updated interior, plus a new engine lineup. Audi will offer a new 1.4-liter TSI engine with an output of either 122 horsepower or 180 horsepower and updated versions of the current engines.

Conclusion

The Riviera name was initially unveiled in 1963 and was one of the best-sold models in Buick's lineup, so the company's decision to bring it back is no surprise. We're just hoping it will get as much design elements seen on the concept as possible.
