It's another year of waiting for the Cadillac CTS-V Sedan before it gets its new looks, so for now, the high-performance luxury sedan is content selling its performance capabilities packaged with last-generation's styling That, essentially, is the conundrum for the CTS-V Sedan. Talks of a new look gained some steam with the introduction of the next-generation CTS Sedan, and it's likely that the CTS-V Sedan will follow suit next year, and inherit the new CTS styling.

For now, though, this is what customers are going to get, and while it may be a smarter move to just sit and wait for the new CTS-V, it's not like this model has completely lost all its appeal.

It still performs like a muscle car disguised in a luxury sedan's body, and its aesthetics still look pretty good, despite getting up there in age.

Exterior

The 2014 CTS-V Coupe must've been steaming when it saw Cadillac introduce the CTS Sedan. We can only imagine what it was thinking at that time. "Why didn't I get that new look, too?" Unfortunately, those are questions that only Cadillac can answer.

For now, the CTS-V Sedan's exterior look will remain the same, at least for another year.

It's not all that bad, to be honest, because the CTS-V Sedan still has a lot of the design characteristics that made it a head-turner when it first burst into the scene...years ago.

It'll help if you make good use of the optional equipment available, so if you're going to buy the CTS-V Sedan knowing full well that next year's model could look entirely different, wouldn't it be a good idea to spruce it up with something like a panoramic sunroof?

Interior

The interior of the CTS-V Sedan is proof that first impressions can be a little deceiving. Materials aren't the best in its class, but they are right on par with what you can expect with a performance luxury sedan. Compare it with the interior of the CLS63 AMG and it's not even close.

Also, like its coupe counterpart, the CTS-V Sedan's center console consists of a lot of buttons and controls. It looks really functional at first, but once you start using it, you're likely to find the exercise confusing with all the controls confined in such a small space.

Even the seats are stiff and a little too upright so much so that if you really want to enjoy your seating preferences, the optional Recaro seats are your best bet.

But the CTS-V Sedan does have a number of impressive attributes, highlighted by its lavish space, consisting of better-than-the-rest headroom and legroom.

Competition

2014 Jaguat XFR-S

The Jaguar XFR-S is a true howler in every sense of the word, so much so that it's got a lot of fight when you line it up next to the CTS-V Sedan.

Given how carbon fiber played an important role in developing the aerodynamic package of the XFR-S, you'd be excused if you find yourself surprised knowing how much of the material can be found in it.

Under the hood, the XFR-S comes packed with a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 that delivers a total of 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque, right in the same vicinity as that of the CTS-V Sedan. That’s good for an increase of 40 horsepower and 41 pound-feet of torque over the XFR. With the extra power the XFR-S is capable of hitting 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph.

2014 Mercedes CLS63 AMG S-Model

With an improved 5.0-liter, V-8 biturbo engine that delivers a stout 585 horsepower peak torque of 590 pound-feet, the new CLS 63 AMG S-Model really is in a class of its own. One can argue that the CTS-V Sedan has the numbers to compete against it, but in terms of combining performance, aesthetics, and all-around luxury, it's hard to go against the Mercedes.

Conclusion

We have no complaints about the performance of the Cadillac CTS-V Sedan. It's a powerhouse on wheels, and there's no denying that. Our qualm is that the design of the car is getting a little old. At some point -- presumably as early as next year -- the CTS-V Sedan will sport a completely new design.

That begs the question: why not just wait for the new model, right?
