Randall "Memphis" Raines (Nicolas Cage) used to be the best car thief in Southern California. After walking away from the life for 6 years, Raines returns to the world of grand theft auto in an attempt to save the life of his younger brother, Kip (Giovanni Ribisi).

It seems that the younger Raines has decided to follow in big brother’s footsteps. After botching the theft of a Porsche for psychotic crime figure Raymond Calitri (Christopher Eccleston), Memphis is given a deal: his brother’s life in return for 50 cards in 72 hours.

Now just any Honda on the side of road won’t do for Calitri — he’s got a list of cars that need to be delivered for shipment to South America. Luxury cars, exotic cars, collector’s cars and specialty cars are what Calitri’s buyers want and he will accept no less from Raines. Realizing he can’t do all of this alone, Raines hooks up with as much of his old crew as he can, including mechanic Otto Halliwell (Robert Duvall), Atley (Will Patton, Entrapment), Kenny (Chi McBride), Sphinx (Vinnie Jones) and his former love, Sway(Angelina Jolie). On Raines’ trail is auto theft Detective Roland Castelbeck (Delroy Lindo), who still holds a grudge for not busting Raines six years earlier.

From there it’s steal ’em, drive ’em, chase ’em and do it all over again. Oh yeah, they wreck some police cars, too.
