TopSpeed’s Best of 2010: Commercial of the Year

It is more than just proven theory that good advertising improves product sales. Usually people spend millions just for letting the public know that they actually exist on the market and that they have something to sell. The same thing applies to the automotive industry. A good commercial can make anyone take a certain car into consideration when going to a dealer to make their purchase.

It is a fact that makers like Mercedes, BMW, and Audi have impressive commercials and that Lamborghini and Ferrari makes us say "Wow!" every time we watch one of their videos, but this time we’re turning our attention to something a bit different. This year, we believe the commercial of the year should go to the "Nissan Leaf - Polar Bear."

If asked if this commercial made us take the Nissan Leaf into consideration then we would have to be honest and say no. Truth is, we were impressed with the vehicle long before that. The great thing about this commercial is that it made people think of the repercussions of their decisions. Don’t get us wrong, we’re not persistent tree-huggers by any means, but from time to time, it’s good to be aware of the effects our decisions cause to the creatures surrounding us.

This Polar Bear commercial was heartfelt and powerful, and that is why it was our pick for Commercial of the Year.

Video: Gran Turismo 5 commercial in Japan

Gran Turismo 5 may be a touchy topic these days after Sony – for the umpteenth time, it seems – once again pulled back the release of the video game from its November 2nd deadline. Obviously, that decision wasn’t met with raucous cheers and high salutes, but with exasperation and resigned frustration. That being said, there’s really nothing any one of us can do about it except exercise a great deal of patience. We’ve come this far, anyway. What’s another month or two?

Since we’re on the topic of waiting, here’s something that we can watch to pass the time. It’s the first commercial of GT5 in its home country of Japan featuring an invasion of Matchbox cars sliding down a giant slide with a “We love cars” jingle accompanying it. And in typical Japanese fashion, the ad is concluded by a high-pitched overly enthusiastic voice over touting the game’s release date.

By the way, don’t get your hopes up with that ’11.03’ image at the end. This ad was released before Sony announced its latest delay so there’s nothing to it.

Video: The Nissan Juke is donut-friendly

This commercial is a far cry from the last commercial we saw featuring the Nissan Juke – that one, for a lack of a better word, has ‘weird’ written all over it – and much to our delight, this new ad is certainly right up our alley.

We know the Juke is capable of a lot of things, but to be able to pull off some pretty sick donuts – the kind we enjoy doing to our cars, not the kind we stuff our mouths silly with – is a definite turn-on for prospective buyers of Nissan’s quirky little crossover.

We just hope that in the event you find yourself in that dude’s shoes – pun intended, by the way – you might want to take the more prudent action and use the doors of the donut shop instead of crashing through a glass window.

We’re just saying.

The new Lincoln MKX commercial featuring John Slattery

Every man who has ever seen Mad Men will attest that it’s one of the best shows on TV today. Lincoln seems to think so too because why else would they tap John Slattery – aka Roger Sterling – to be the man to promote their brand’s refreshed line-up.

Automakers seem to have had a deep-lying affinity for the show with Mercedes-Benz recently signing John Hamm – he’s Don Draper in the show, by the way – to be their new voice over for their commercials.

The Lincoln commercial for the 2011 MKX promotes the car’s unparalleled attention to its technology, with Slattery even saying that “no other anything in the world has it.”

And with the campaign’s tag line of “Smarter than Luxury”, it fits right in with Slattery’s character in Mad Men, Roger Sterling. Really, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more ideal pitchman for Lincoln than John Slattery, a man the company says fits in to their brand for his "authentic, real-world appeal."

Now, care to venture a guess as to what auto brand will try to get Robert Morse to work with them?

Video: Kids love the all-new 2012 Mercedes CLS

The next time you’re in the process of buying a Mercedes, you might want to ask input from your little kid because as this commercial proves, they really know what makes for an awesome car. And if they’re shrewd enough to hatch up a plan to get a 2012 Mercedes CLS sedan to stop at a red light as they take a closer look at it, then these wily rascals are about as good a reference as you can find when you’re in the market for a 2012 CLS.

Mercedes has yet to divulge details behind the car – we expect them to do so when it’s unveiled at the Paris Motor Show – but we already expect a number of things from the all-new Shooting Brake Concept-inspired CLS, including a number of engine options including a 3.5-liter direct-injection VG engine and a 4.6-liter twin-turbocharged V8 variant.

For now, though, we highly suggest that you give this commercial a look-see. If for nothing else, it proves one thing about children these days...

They may same the darndest things a lot of the time, but clearly, they also know an awesome car when they see one.

Video: Nissan’s Juke commercial has all the elements of weird

There really isn’t a whole lot of words we could use to describe this video other than if you choose words like ‘spooky’, ‘creepy’ and ‘weird’. Whether or not Nissan intentionally made this Nissan Juke ad that way, well, they’re the only ones that can explain it.

Nevertheless, if you go past all the spookiness and look at this in a glass half full sort of way, Nissan is positioning the Juke as a vehicle that’s brimming with energy, enough to power an otherwise doldrum city. If you look at it that way, then this ad isn’t all that bad. Heck, that image of a pseudo Richard Simmons in a stationary bike does add a bit of humor to it, although that in itself is still a little creepy given how the whole tenet of this commercial runs.

In any case, there is something to be said about this commercial. If for nothing else, we can all take comfort in knowing that the Juke crossover can never be associated as a boring car. Weird? Maybe. Bland? Not after this ad.

Video: Porsche Intelligent Performance

Porsche has unveiled a new commercial that shows that our love for cars is in our DNA. Okay, so our love for cars cannot be described as a genetic trait, but Porsche has put together their own strand of DNA that will allow them to continue producing cars at their magnitude, and they’ve created this commercial to explain it to all. Taking the concept a step further, Porsche has even revealed a web special page that explains the idea behind this commercial. Their main goal is to illustrate what makes a Porsche model so special. If you speak German then the explanation will be clear. If you don’t, well, you might need a translator to figure it out. Regardless the video is pretty cool, so check it out!

The "Porsche Intelligent Performance" is what makes a Porsche so special. This concept is what leads Porsche to create more efficient engines and lighter bodies. Porsche also explains that this concept allows them to create vehicles with more power, but with lower fuel consumption and lower emissions. Basically, the concept is just a name for the intelligent minds of the engineers that exist within Porsche, and the incredible results these engineers produce. If you want to see this concept in action then you can just take a look at the 911 GT3 R hybrid, the Cayenne S hybrid, and the Concept Study 918 Spyder

Video: Audi Q5 Mountainbike ad

Audi has unveiled a new commercial for the Audi Q5 Quattro. The ad features a bunch of guys riding their mountain bikes in an effort to teach all of us a thing or two about the capability of the Audi SUV. Apparently, the Q5 can run through the woods and trail through all of the rough terrain they have to offer, just like the killer mountain bikes. Want some visual confirmation? Check out the video and see for yourself

The Audi Q5 is rolling off the production line in three engine variants – one gasoline engine and two TDI units. All of the engines are direct-injection models with a turbocharger – characterized by outstanding performance, hefty propulsive power and cultivated running while at the same time offering impressive fuel efficiency. The most powerful engine in the line-up is the 3.0 TDI engine that delivers 240 HP and 500 NM of torque. This version can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, and can hit a top speed of 225 km/h (139.81 mph).

Video: BMW’s "Story of 3" commercial

We haven’t seen or heard a whole lot of BMW’s “Story of Joy” in a while, but it doesn’t mean that BMW is done releasing those cool “Joy” commercials, which highlight the joy and happiness of owning – and driving - a BMW.

The central subject of the new “Joy” commercial is the 34-year history of the 3-Series and the pleasure and happiness of owning one. Not that owners of the 3-Series need any more affirmation of driving around town with a 3-Series, but it does paint a very poignant picture of the age-old belief that BMW is the ultimate expression of how a sports car should be and that the 3-Series is, as evidenced by the universal love for the car, the epitome of what BMW strives to be: a company that gives its customers a feeling of joy and happiness.

Check out the video and watch another one of BMW’s amazing “Joy” commercials.

It’s Ken Block vs. A.J. Allmendinger in Ford’s ’43 Fiestas’ Competition

This may be a little weird, but we are going to just go along with it. NASCAR’s Richard Petty and A.J. Allmendinger are joining together with newfound rally legend Ken Block to do a promotion for Ford and their 43 Fiestas competition. Taking the saying, "Can’t we all just get along" very seriously, these three have joined forces to market the contest which will see Ford giving away 43 flat screen TVs, 43 ticket-and-hotel packages to the Ford NASCAR 400 Sprint Cup race, and one specially prepared Ford Fiesta to a lucky winner. And it gets better; if Allmendinger wins the race, Ford will be giving away 43 fiestas to all of the grand prize winners.

Richard "The King" Petty won’t be doing any of the driving because, well, it just wouldn’t be fair to the other two, but he does make a little cameo to no doubt build up interest in the competition. The race is between Allmendinger and Block, who have significantly different driving styles, to say the least. Allmendinger is the driver of the Insignia Best Buy #43 Ford Fusion and has won many different championships including the Karting Federation Grand National, Barber Dodge Pro, Toyota Atlantic, and Champ Car Rookie of the Year. Ken Block is the driver of the 43 Ford Fiesta driver in the Rally America Championship and he has won five consecutive championships in Rally America’s 100 Acre Woods Rally in Missouri. Block was just recently in the headlines for unveiling his first video of his new free-wheeling joy ride, the Gymkhana III.
