alfa romeo 159 gta spy shots

Spy photographers caught the 159 GTA on testing at Germany’s Nurburgring circuit. Alfa Romeo will drop the Holden-built V6 in favour of a Ferrari V8 engine. The 159 GTA will compete with Audi RS4, BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 AMG.

The 159 GTA will feature large low-profile tyres, slightly flared wheelarches, and side skirts. The prototype caught also wears a rear spoiler, unlike its predecessor the 156 GTA.

The 159 flagship will spread the greater power generated by a V8 to all four wheels with Alfa’s ’Q4’ all-wheel-drive system.

Thank-you, Tango.

Getting to the truth of any story involving Italy and anything automotive can be an interesting process.

The 159 transmission really ought to take the Holden torque, which is only 237 lb ft. I had very nearly that in a 1989 Lancia Thema Turbo 16V ie and a 1996 Alfa Romeo 164 Cloverleaf.

The Holden engine may not have been providing the kind of performance wanted by Alfa and its customers, although the blame has generally been laid at the weight of the various models using this engine.

Could there be an on-going problem with GM?

Could there be potential customers out there who, like me, will simply not entertain the idea of a GM engine in an Alfa? Or is that assuming that they both know and care?

If this Ferrari engine is to be a V6, will it not have to be completely new? Would they do that for Alfa, or are we likely to see something else interesting for Ferrari itself, or maybe even Maserati, in the not too distant future?

I await the full and final details with great interest.

I just looked around a bit and the story so far is that Alfa dropped the 3.2L Holden-derived V6 because it had too much torque for the transmission. So they are replacing it with a V8 sourced from either Ferrari or Maserati. Not sure how that works. But I actually saw a pic of the engine. It actually looks like a V6...three spark-plug wires on the bank.
