chinese bring back the mg

Nanjing Auto bought the rights to the MG name, and the company, in 2005. Since then, they have invested $362 million in a new plant and in equipment in Nanjing, China.

Next month, Nanjing will introduce the result of these efforts, the MG-7, in China. The car is a 1.8 liter turbocharged base car starting at $22,578, and a 2.5 liter V-6 version starting at $39,842 in China. To this point, plans for export, if any, have not been announced.

The company will also produce the MG TF and other models at the former Rover plant in Longbridge, Great Britain. Introduction of the TF is expected in either September or October of this year.

Nanjing is owned by Yuejin Motor Group, also a Chinese company. Yuejin produces a variety of vehicles, including sedans and even armored vehicles, and has a total production of about 180,000 vehicles annually. Part of that production is a joint venture truck deal with Fiat’s truck subsidiary, Iveco.

Yuejin exports to Africa and South America, though it has plans to introduce its models in Italy and Spain.
