Is this the end of the road for SUV?

For good few years now the market for Sports Utility Vehicles has grown, these beefed up cars have had such an impact on the roads of the cities of the world that they have even been given their own sort of branding by the media, here in the UK, we know them as “Chelsea Tractors” simply because if you take wonder around the well healed streets of Chelsea, London you will see more and more of the huge vehicles, which incidentally do appear to be getting larger all the time, while the road space is not, therefore this is where the problems arise.

In the USA, the market is massive, around three quarters of all SUV’s are sold in the states, but something odd has happened, the market share has fallen by nearly a third, which in turn has had an effect on the main manufactures, are all experiencing a fall in sales, while on the other hand we can see that the small compact type cars are increasing their market share and are up by just under 20%, it is hard to say if this is a growing trend or maybe just a hic-cup for this year, only time will tell.

So, is this the end of the SUV? Not entirely because there will always be a market for these vehicles, but with the ever growing movement against the SUV it is hard to see how long this sector of the auto market will survive for.
