Until now Lexus only had hybrid variants of models already offered with a conventional internal-combustion engine, such as the RX SUV and GS and LS sedans.
"Next year here in Detroit, we will expand our conventional hybrid line-up by staging world premiers of two all-new, dedicated hybrids, one for Toyota and one for Lexus," Toyota Motor president Katsuaki Watanabe said at the Detroit auto show.
While details on Lexus first hybrid only model are scarce, Toyota’s 2009 hybrid model debut will be a new-generation Prius.
