The R2 has a streamlined aerodynamic laminated GRP body giving the occupants protection whilst the lapover seats provide for a narrow cockpit with plenty of elbow room. The reduced body width means less wind deflection and enhanced performance. There is a full colour choice of tough gel coat finishes.
Chassis
The all new fully triangulated space frame chassis represents a leap forward in structural integrity as it is stiff yet light. Due to the cockpit being the same width as the engine bay the main chassis rails are not cut or welded thereby increasing the overall strength and providing high levels of torsional ridigity. The R2 also uses long front wishbones for excellent dynamics.
Pulling Power
The engine bay is deceptively large, it will take anything from a 1.6 Zetec to a 3 litre V6 Duratec. There’s even room for a turbo charger!
Stopping power
By utilising the donor car pedal assembly complete with master cylinders and servo the build cost becomes very reasonable. Upgrades to 4 pot alloy callipers costs only £200 extra. Bear in mind the R2 uses the hand brake assembly and even the cables from the donor and you will see the cost savings. The R2 also uses the donors gear change cables, radiator, steering column and even the drive shafts without modifications.
The R2 donor
Use any Focus or post ’96 Mondeo. Buy one for a few hundred pounds, then put the parts you do not require on e-bay and you can get more back than you paid for the complete car. A standard 1.6 package will give you a huge 200 bhp per ton but the new R2 has room for the ST170 with its six speed box! The boy racers are smashing them regularly so an ST category D from your local salvage dealer with a V5 can be found for under £1000. Then you will have over 340 bhp per ton! And that’s not the limit!
