Final cold-weather testing of the new CL-Class coupe is under way in northern Sweden.
It won’t be long before we see the real thing, however: a formal unveiling is scheduled for the Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of March
Like the W221-series S-Class saloon launched at the end of last year, this CL is a conservative-looking update from its predecessor, but with plenty of new technology under the surface.
Expect an electronic drive-by-wire throttle, rear-view cameras, lane departure warning and intelligent cruise control, active "parameter" steering and Mercedes’ Pre-Safe crash-sensing system. However, there’s no SBC (Sensotronic Brake Control), which has been canned after customer complaints.
Engines for the new CL range will be the 5.5-litre V8 (CL 550) and the twin-turbo 5.5 V12 (CL 600), with the AMG 6.3-litre V8 following on sale slightly later. : The CL 63 AMG will also feature Mercedes’ latest seven-speed automatic transmission and ceramic-composite braking system.
