Concept cars have always been an integral part of any major auto show. These events give automakers an opportunity to showcase some of the most outlandish and over-the-top vehicles we'll ever see.

Now that doesn't mean that these concepts will translate to production. Actually, very few do with most of them forgotten long after the auto show ends.

At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show->ke228, we saw a lot of concept cars that piqued our curiosities one way or the other. Some were fancy, some were strange, and some just completely blew us away.

In the end, the concept cars at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show delivered on the promise of providing some edge and flavor to the proceedings. On the list below, we'll show you all of the concepts that caught our eye, and if we do say so ourselves, some of those are just too awesome to not be sent to the production line.

Check out the concept cars from the 2012 Geneva Motor Show after the jump.

Alfa Romeo Touring Superleggera Disco Volante Concept

As concept cars go, the Alfa Romeo Touring Superleggera Disco Volante Concept is wicked. And it also has a really long name. The latter notwithstanding, the Disco Volante was built as a modern-day interpretation of the legendary C 52 with a chassis of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. But the best thing about the Disco Volante, apart from it carrying a Maserati-sourced 4.7-liter V8 engine that produces 450 horsepower, is that there's a good chance we might see a production version soon.

Bentley EXP 9 F

Bentley understands that in order to keep up with the ever-changing whims of the customer, you have to adjust to what they want. And now that luxury SUVs are in vogue, Bentley is presenting their own SUV, the EXP 9 F. Long rumored and never materialized - until now that is - the Bentley EXP 9 F looks like any other Bentley that was built with an SUV chassis. We love the Continental to pieces, but we can't imagine the EXP 9 F retaining its concept guise for the production model. That being said, the EXP 9 F is powered by a 6.0 liter, twin-turbocharged W12 with the production version possibly carrying a 4.0 liter, twin-turbocharged V8 or a hybrid drivetrain. Either way, we'd like to see some aesthetic changes done on it before we see the production model.

Bertonce Nuccio Concept

When you name a car after the son of your company patriarch, you better have a car that lives up to its name. The Bertone Nuccio Concept looks the part of one, especially the lights configuration that run the entire length of the front and rear of the car. The concept is also powered by a 4.3 liter V8 engine that delivers a total of 480 horsepower, which is no slouch by and means. All in all, the concept is as described: a concept that we probably wouldn't see in the road anytime soon.

BMW M135i

There's nothing concept-ish about the BMW 135i, but rest assured, BMW is pegging it as such. The Germans recent announcement of their new M Performance Parts includes this new 'concept' 1-Series, which features a distinctive front apron with large air intakes and a new rear apron finished in Dark Shadow metallic. The M135i is also powered by a straight six-cylinder engine featuring M Performance Twin Power Turbo technology with a power output of more than 300 horsepower.

Hyundai i-oniq Concept

South Korean automaker Hyundai headed to the Geneva Motor Show with an electric sports hatchback with a range-extending petrol engine. It's called the i-oniq Concept and it showcases the company's "new technology and design which present an impression of the company’s future thinking." The penthouse roof of the concept is one of the highlights of the car, while its 1.0 liter 3-cylinder petrol engine that is combined to a lithium ion electric motor, produces 109 horsepower.

Infiniti EMERGE-E

Now this is one concept that really captured our hearts. Infiniti is calling the EMERGE-E as a mid-ship sports car that characterizes what the company is striving for with their future vehicle line-up. The completely new design points toward the company's intention in to build dramatic and sustainable high performance cars. Speaking of high performance, the twin electric motor powering the EMERGE-E packs a saucy 402 horsepower, good enough to run 0-60 mph in four seconds.

Italdesign-Giugiaro Brivido

This concept wins our mythical award for Best Concept at Geneva. Built and designed by Italdesign-Giugiaro in cooperation with the Volkswagen Group Electronics Research Lab in Calidornia, the Brivido Concept carries a hybrid powertrain featuring a 3.0-liter V6 engine. This engine delivers a total of 360 HP and 339 lb-ft of torque and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Brivido can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds and can hit a top speed of 171 mph. The hybrid system, that will most likely combine the V6 with a pair of electric engines, will deliver a total of 408 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. CO2 emissions comes in at 154g/km. More than just the powertrain, the enduring image of the Brivido is that sick, specially-designed single door that uses glass as a genuine structural element.

Magna Steyr MILA Coupic

You know how some toys come in 3-in-1 packages? Magna Steyr hopes to accomplish the same thing, except that instead of a toy, they're doing it on a vehicle called the MILA Coupic Concept. The vehicle is part crossover-part coupe that comes with an innovative and retractable soft top roof with two sections that can be opened independently from each other. It also has a five-seat configuration with the rear seat capable of being folded forward, thus turning the vehicle into a glorified pick-up. Coupe. Crossover. Pick-up. One concept.

Morgan Electric Plus-E Concept

A classic car sporting an electric drivetrain. Yep, that's what the auto industry has become. Inconceivable as this may have been, say, 30 years ago, technology - and some creative thinking - has taken exponential leaps and bounds. The result is a car like the Morgan Electric Plus-E Concept with a Zytek electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, two power sources that allow the vehicle to produce 160 horsepower and travel up to 120 miles on just a single charge.

Pininfarina Cambiano

Coming in a close second - at least in our eyes - next to the Brivido is the Pininfarina Cambiano, which really defied all our expectations. The luxury sports saloon-coupe was inspired by the 1957 Lancia Florida II and features an unconventional layout with a single door on the driver's side and two doors that open from the center with no central pillar on the other side. It also has four electric motors that produce a total of 328 horsepower with a 0-62 mph time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 186 mph.

Sbarro Espera Intencity Concept

We have to applaud the students of ESPERA Sbarro Montbéliard for their designing skills. Every year, they show a concept at Geneva and this year, they're presenting the Intencity Concept. The Intencity is a 1+1 urban city car that does away with combustion engines, opting instead for a 100kW electric motor that produces a tidy 136 horsepower. Love the way the car looks; we'd take it over the FT-Bh, that's for sure.

Toyota FT-Bh

Think of it as the Lexus LF-Lc's little brother. The FT-Bh is Toyota's interpretation of what their future city cars could look like. The pint-sized hybrid city dweller carries Toyota's new "Keen Look" styling, although we can't seem to grasp why they're so high on the concept. As far as we're concerned, it doesn't look the part of a car we'd want to be driving around in 2020.
