One Lap America actually has roots dating back to the original Cannonball Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, known simply as Cannonball. Many of today’s enthusiasts think that Cannonball was simply a movie or plot, but this was actually a real-life cross-country race that included high speeds on U.S. highways.

The original Cannonball only lasted five runs until its organizer, Brock Yates, decided he had better quit this no-holds-barred race before the authorities decide to close it down. In 1984, the Cannonball returned, but was not about making it across the country as fast as possible, but about making it through a course that went throughout the lower 48 states and ended up with the amount of miles closest to Brock’s estimate.

In the modern era of the One Lap America, the race is now about following the rules of the road, as you drive throughout a predetermined course, and between these leisurely drives, you have track events. The scoring of this event is solely based on the track event results, but you and your co-driver(s) must also survive driving 24 hours on end, stopping only to enjoy a “gourmet” gas station hot dog or two along the way.

This 19-event, eight-day racing series just wrapped up on Saturday and we have your full list of winners in each class and we have also broken down a list of all of the oddest and most awesome cars to grace the 2012 running.

Click past the jump to read about the odd and awesome cars, as well as the winners from each class.

Big Bore Class

The Big Bore Class includes sports and GT cars, but broken down into four sections: over $50,000 with 3.5-liter engine or larger, over $50,000 with engine less than 3.5-liter, under $50,000 with engine over $50,000, and under $50,000 with engine smaller than 3.5-liter. In the Big Bore Class, some of the cool cars we saw included:

-2005 Ferrari F430->ke390, driven by Basil Ford and Larry Kosilla

-2010 Porsche 911->ke282 GT3, driven by Carl Stringer and Patrick Welsh

-2013 Ford Mustang Roush Stage 3 (stock), driven by Jeff Lacina and Evan Smith

The Ferrari and Porsche of course will be at the top of this list. They are two of the highest performance vehicles to run this year and look pretty good doing it too. The 2013 Ford Mustang Roush Stage 3 gets a nod thanks to it being stock and some real life American muscle amongst the supercars!

Mid-Price Sedan and Wagon Class

The Mid-Price sedans and wagons class includes all sedans and wagons that range from $20,000 to $50,000. Some of the coolest cars we caught in this class include:

-2008 Mitsubishi Evolution->ke2426 X MR, driven by Paul Seto, Chris Wirth and Stefan Rzadzinski

-2008 Mitsubishi Evolution X GSR, driven by Timothy Harper and Stephen Burke

-2003 Mercury Marauder (stock), driven by Don Vaughan, Dan Axtell and Duane Dean

The two Evolutions are in it, simply because the Evolution kicks ass, even though the EVO X is slower than the car it replaced. They are still likely one of the meanest four-door sedans for the money. The Marauder makes the cut, as there were only 11,052 made throughout their two years of existence and the Marauder was a nice injection of performance into the otherwise lame Mercury lineup at the time. Plus, the dude’s got guts running this sled amongst a slew of ultra-high-performance vehicles.

Economy Car Class

This class covers all of the econo-boxes we see every day on the road and they must be less than $25,000. The coolest of this class include:

-1989 Honda CRX HF, driven by Andy Hollis and Alan Marcos Pinto Cesar

This was the only entry in the Econo class, so we really had no choice in the matter. In all reality though, we would have chosen this car regardless, as the dudes driving it have a real set on `em. With its “concrete melting” 62 horsepower, the CRX HF is so slow that it’s a shoe-in on our list. It also received the obligatory nod, thanks to its massive wing keeping the backside of this scary-fast hatchback in control, plus the wing is good for at least 20 horsepower, right?

In all honesty, we have no idea what it has under the hood, since it is not classified as a “Stock” car; we just like to tease the fact that it’s the fuel-sipping HF model and not the Si. Given the fact that this CRX came out in 10th place overall, it likely has some serious modifications.

Luxury Sedan and Wagon Class

This class covers all sedans and wagons that crest the $50,000 mark. There were sure to be plenty of BMW Ms in this class. The Coolest of the lot include:

-2011 Cadillac CTS-V->ke1200 Wagon (Stock), driven by Robert Dubler, Christian Schobler and Richard Plank

-2010 Porsche Panamera, driven by Bill and Dawn Treffert

-2013 BMW M5 Sedan (Stock), driven by mike Schonell Renner, Thomas Lappin and Steve Maguire

The 2011 CTS-V Wagon was a no-brainer. C’mon, it’s a 556-horsepower station wagon! You thought we could overlook it?

The Porsche Panamera just tugs at 1980s hearts, as it is truly the mullet haircut of cars, just reversed. Up front it looks like a party-hard sports car, but it's the rear that is all business with its four-door body. Hands down it is a winner based on looks alone. Oh, and it pumps out 400 to 500 horsepower from the factory, which helps a little.

The 2013 M5 makes our list because we are just imagining the conversation between the husband and wife, as the husband begs his wife to let him take their newly financed M5 out to the racetrack. Every married man in the U.S. should be in awe of this guy’s negotiation skills. The 560-horsepower V-8 helped the selection process too.

Sport Utility Vehicle and Pickup Class

Um, really? SUVs we understand, but pickup trucks? Unfortunately, no pickup trucks entered this year. Our favorites of this class include:

-2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee->ke936 SRT8, driven by Marco Diniz, John Palazzolo and Brandt Rosenbusch

-2012 Honda Odyssey, driven by Paul Street and Steven Manley

-2001 Ford E350 Ambulance, driven by David Wilks, Bryan Humphries, Natalie Grygo and John Shofner

The Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a shoe-in on pure adrenaline alone. We are still coming to grips with the Grand Cherokee being a legit sports SUV, so that helped our decision process a little.

The 2012 Odyssey is a complete “LOL” moment for us. We are imagining a grocery/to do list with “Enter in One Lap of America race” on the very bottom.

If the Odyssey was an “LOL” moment, than the E350 Ambulance was an “ROTFLOL” moment. Something about that ambulance sitting on racing wheels just doesn’t sit right, and we like stuff that just doesn’t quite sit right.

Classic American Class

This class includes any vehicle manufactured prior to 1989, including all special builds, hot-rods, etc. Our favorites of the Classic American class include:

-1967 Chevy Camaro RS, driven by JamesShipka and Carl Casanova

-1981 Chevy Camaro Z28, driven by Michael Hickman and Damon Josz

First off, there were only three entries in this class, so pickins were a little slim. The first one that we love is the 1967 Camaro RS. We just love the fact that the owner was willing to enter this beauty into the race.

The 1981 Chevy Camaro Z28 makes our list because we are just happy to see one of these massively underpowered sleds doing more than wasting away in someone’s backyard.

Classic Imported Class

This class covers all of your pre-1989 imports. Our favorites of this class include:

-1986 Porsche 944, driven by Chris Porter and Herman Porter

-1987 Porsche 944T, driven by Jack Ireton-Hewitt

We have to give a little love to these two teams for pulling out the “poor man’s Porsche” for the race. We especially need to tip our hats to the team running one of just 3,222 1987 944Ts in existence.

Alternative Fuel Class

This class covers any vehicle that runs on anything except normal gasoline alone, including: hybrids, electric, hydrogen, water, diesel, solar, etc. We couldn’t pick any vehicles from this class, as there was only one entry, and that was a VW Jetta TDI Cup Edition. We cannot really place a diesel car in with alternative fuels, as diesel and gasoline are directly related to one another. Diesel vehicles should honestly have their own class in this race.

Retro Vehicle Class

This class covers all of the “Retro” style cars. Things like the MINI Cooper, PT Cruiser, HHR, etc. fall into this category. Our favorites in this class include:

-2008 Chevy HHR->ke1189 SS (stock), driven by Roman and Yves Dubler

-2010 Chevy HHR SS (stock), driven by Markus Pizzali and Harold Andernatt

The Chevy HHR gets the nod here twice simply because we love the HHR and are tired of the aging MINI Cooper that competed against these two. The HHR pulled off what Chrysler attempted to with the PT Cruiser, by making the HHR actually look like a retro Chevy. The HHR actually resembles, somewhat, the original Suburban, whereas the PT Cruiser didn’t actually look like an old Chrysler. Plus, the 260-horsepower SS model just makes us smile. Too bad the HHR is gone, along with its SS model.

Let's have a look at the winners from each class of the 2012 One Lap America.
