2016 Volvo XC90 Configurator Goes Live

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is a beautiful SUV,->ke145 a testament to Volvo finally getting its design direction in order. I haven’t been this excited about a Volvo vehicle in quite some time, so when the Swedish automaker launched the online configurator for the new XC90, I knew I had to jump to the Volvo->ke188 site as quickly as I could.

The first thing I noticed about the XC90's configurator was its more detailed template compared to the Lexus RC configurator I recently went on. Each configurator is unique so I was just happy that I had a lot to work with. The first thing I did was to get the T6 AWD R-Design trim in favor of the Momentum and Inscription trims, knowing full well that I could only get the cosmetic goodies I wanted on this trim.

As soon as I selected the XC90 R-Design, I quickly took a peek at the available packages (Vision Package, Climate Package, and Convenience Package) and decided to just get all of them. All three packages add up to just $5,550 so it’s not like I’d be burning too much of my fake dollars to get them.

I then decided to give it my virtual XC90 a Bursting Blue Metallic body finish because my first two color choices -- Magic Blue Metallic and Twilight Bronze Metallic -- were only available for the Inscription trim of the XC90. Tough sledding, but I still liked the color I got. I finished off my exterior dress-up with a set of Matte Black Tech 22-inch, double-spoke, alloy wheels.

The only downside in getting the R-Design trim is the limited choice of interior trim options. Actually, there's no choice because the R-Design only comes with a Charcoal Nubuck & Nappa Leather in Charcoal trim. I almost considered starting over from scratch but ultimately decided to keep what I had in and just added carbon-fiber inlays on the cabin to jazz it up.

All in all, my Volvo XC90 reached $61,725. It’s a lot more than the $48,900 base price of the T6 AWD Momentum, but with all the options and packages I got, paying the extra $12,000 was worth it.

Exterior Colors

Volvo is offering 13 different exterior colors for the XC90. That said, you’re going to have to pay attention to your trim choice because certain colors aren't available for each of the three trim options.

The Momentum and Inscription trims have nine of the 13 colors available to them. The only colors you can't get with either of the two are Passion Red, Electric Silver Metallic, and Bursting Blue Metallic. All the rest are available.

Unfortunately, the R-Design trim only has six available colors, including the three colors that aren't available to the Momentum and Inscription trims of the XC90, as well as Crystal White Metallic, Osmium Grey Metallic, and Onyx Black Metallic.

You’re going to have to compromise on the lack of color options for the R-Design, but that shouldn't be a problem if you really want to get those cosmetic updates that this package includes.

Volvo's offering three wheel packages for the XC90, but like the exterior colors, each trim comes with different wheel options.

The Momentum trim gets the standard, 19-inch, turbine, alloy wheels, but for an added cost, you can upgrade to a choice of 20-inch, five-double-spoke alloys, 21-inch 10-spoke, turbine alloys, or 22-inch six-spoke, tech, matte-black alloys.

For the R-Design trim, the standard wheels are 20 inch, five-spoke, tech, matte-grey, diamond-cut alloys. For an extra $1,000, you can opt for the bigger 22-inch five-double-spoke, matte-black, tech alloys.

Finally, the top-of-the-line Inscription trim gets a standard set of 20-inch, 10-spoke, tinted silver, diamond-cut, alloy wheels. If that doesn't suit you, you can opt for any of three optional wheel sets, including 21-inch, eight-spoke alloys; 21-inch 10-spoke turbine alloys, and 22-inch 6-spoke tech black alloys.

Interior Colors

Volvo is offering seven unique interior colors for the XC90. For the Momentum trim, customers can only choose from a list that includes Charcoal Leather in Charcoal, Blond Leather in Blond/Charcoal, and Amber Leather in Charcoal.

The Inscription trim of the XC90 also gets three interior options, including Amber Perforated Nappa Leather in Charcoal, Charcoal Perforated Nappa Leather in Charcoal, and Blond Perforated Nappa Leather in Blond.

Finally, the XC90 R-Design only gets the Charcoal Nubuck & Nappa Leather in Charcoal option.
