Alfa Romeo Releases a 4C-Inspired Bike

Posted on by

The new Alfa Romeo 4C is set to go on sale on the North American market in the second quarter of 2014 at a rumored price of $54,000. However, if you don’t have that kind of coin floating around, the Italian company is offering you a healthier alternative: the new 4C IFD bicycle inspired, of course, by the new sports car .

Breaking down the name, "IFD" stands for "Innovative Frame Design", "4" means it was inspired by the 4C sports car and "C" because it features a C-shaped cross-section of the frame. Just like the sports car, the new bike features a carbon-fiber, half-tube structure and is entirely crafted by hand in Italy .

The new 4C IFD bike will be priced from &euro3,500 ($4,700 at the current exchange rates) to &euro9,000 ($12,000). It will be put on sale in December 2013 in Europe, Asia and America.

The new Alfa Romeo is powered by a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that features direct fuel injection, dual continuous variable-valve timing and a revolutionary scavenging-control system to avoid turbo lag.

The engine delivers a total of 240 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 258 pound-feet of torque between 2,100 and 4,000 rpm. The 4C sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 160 mph.

Rumors suggest that on the American market the 4C will be priced from $54k.

Press Release

Alfa Romeo Releases a 4C-Inspired Bike

Sophisticated design with a light-weight, innovative frame: these are the features of the ’4C IFD Bicycle’ project designed by the Alfa Romeo Style Centre and Compagnia Ducale. The acronym IFD (standing for ’Innovative Frame Design’) places the accent on the intensive research aimed at making the frame as light as possible.

The same principle was applied by Alfa Romeo engineers in designing the 4C to obtain a weight/power ratio lower than 4 kg/HP, a genuine super car result. To achieve this they decided to reduce the car’s weight by choosing materials that combine lightness and efficiency, and improving - at times even creating - manufacturing processes that fuse high technology and craftsmanship. The result is a total dry weight of only 895 kg made mostly of aluminium, steel, lightened SMC and carbon fibre.

The structure fashioned as a simplified "4" is inspired by the dynamic, streamline style of the Alfa Romeo super car. The innovative "C"-shaped cross-section of the frame introduces a carbon-fibre half-tube structure made of the same high-tech material used for the chassis of the Alfa Romeo 4C for the first time in the world.

The profiles converge dynamically towards the junctions of the handle bar, the chainset and the saddle to form structural strength points joined by steel tie-rods which enhance the special construction of the frame.
