According to Car and Driver magazine, BMW->ke178 is developing three new models, including a new 2-Series. The other models consist of the Megacity concept and a car smaller than the 1-Series->ke313, aimed at the Audi A1.

According to the report, the 2-Series would become BMW’s entry-level rear-wheel drive model, meaning that title would no longer belong to the 1-Series, which would become front-wheel drive. Prospective buyers don’t fret, as this probably won’t happen until 2015.

There is a chance that the new 1-Series with a front-wheel drive setup might get a hybrid system, as the German automaker is currently developing one with the PSA Group.

BMW recently filed trademark applications in the U.S for the names 228, 230 and 235. This means that there could be a six-cylinder motor in a 2-Series, but we would imagine a four-cylinder might be offered in the base version, as well as some diesel options.
