Yesterday, we talked about Ford’s EcoBoost technology in their Start Concept. Now at the Beijing Auto Show, Ford has announced that they will also include their EcoBoost Technology in Europe’s Ford Mondeo. The Mondeo will receive the 2.0L I4 EcoBoost engine mated with the new Ford Powershift six speed automatic transmission. This single turbocharger with a direct fuel injection delivery system delivers torque comparable to a V6 engine while fuel economy is boosted by 10%.

“Customers have embraced EcoBoost technology because of its ability to deliver power and performance with uncompromised fuel economy,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president for global product development. “We’re committed to bringing this technology to multiple vehicles so that more customers can take advantage of the no-compromise Ford EcoBoost combination of power, performance and fuel economy. Ford EcoBoost works in any gasoline engine, so adding a 4-cylinder engine to complement our V6 line-up was a logical development.”

Along with that announcement, Ford also announced that the 2.0L I4 EcoBoost will be the first EcoBoost engine to go global with the 1.6L and the 4 cylinder following shortly thereafter. They have already revealed the Europen lineup featuring the 2.0L engine: Ford S-Max->ke1415, Galaxy->ke1413, and Mondeo->ke1709 will start off the transition. The Ford Edge will receive the engine later this year while Australia’s Ford Falcon->ke442 will inherit the 4 cylinder engine in 2011.

This announcement comes as no surprise to us. We figured Ford->ke31 would be running full steam ahead with this technology that cuts CO2 emissions by 15% compared to larger displacement engines with similar power. Cutting CO2 emissions seems to be an important trend and we are sure Ford will be taking advantage of that as any other automaker would.

Ford has announced that its exclusive EcoBoost engine technology, displayed at the Beijing Auto Show, will be introduced for the first time in China in a Mondeo to be equipped with a 2.0-litre I4 Ford EcoBoost engine.

Ford EcoBoost combines a single turbocharger with a direct injection fuel delivery system to deliver class leading power and torque levels from an I4 engine to levels comparable to a larger V6 engine while providing fuel economy gains of at least 10 percent.

Introduced in 2009 on V6 engines to provide the power of a V8, EcoBoost technology will be globally available in both 1.6- and 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engines from Ford later this year. Since its introduction on premium vehicles, the power enhancing, fuel saving technology has spread to more mainstream car and trucks.

Building on a proven strategy

The 2.0-litre engine applies many of the same basic principles of the original 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost engine including direct fuel injection and turbocharging. Direct fuel injection employs six individual jets located in the fuel injector to spray fuel directly into the cylinder to mix with incoming air. When the fuel is sprayed directly in the cylinder, it cools the air right where it is going to burn, allowing higher compression ratios to be incorporated to raise power output.

The turbocharger is small, about the size of a grapefruit, but provides a huge performance advantage to the engine by utilizing exhaust gases to spin the turbocharger and return otherwise wasted air back into the engine for more power. Exhaust gases are cooled through an air-to-air intercooler. A compressor increases or boosts the pressure of the air prior to entering the engine.

The 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine features independently variable timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts, optimising gas flow through the combustion chamber at all engine speeds. The TiVCT (Twin independent Variable Camshaft Timing) system plays a significant role in improving engine efficiency and performance, particularly at partial loading.

The use of TiVCT has also allowed Ford’s EcoBoost engineers to enhance low-end torque by exploiting a ‘scavenging’ effect. Scavenging takes advantage of pressure differences between the intake and exhaust manifolds to increase the flow of cooler, fresh air through the engine at low speeds, generating increased torque and helping the turbo to spin up more quickly.

The use of Ford EcoBoost technology also decreases the amount of carbon emissions released to the atmosphere. CO2 emissions are cut by up to 15 per cent compared to larger displacement engines with similar power.

The engine is mated to a new Ford PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission. It is specifically calibrated to take advantage of the 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine’s power curve. The gearbox includes a new torque converter for improved driving feel, smoother shifting and greater fuel economy through revised gear ratios.

Going global

The 2.0-litre EcoBoost I4 is the first engine in the Ford EcoBoost line-up to go truly global. Ford has already announced its application in Europe on Ford S-MAX, Galaxy and Mondeo models. Ford Edge models in North America are slated to receive the engine later this year. In Australia, Ford Falcon also will be offered with 4-cylinder Ford EcoBoost engines in 2011.

Specific timing for the introduction in China of the Mondeo featuring the 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine will be announced shortly.
