Abu Dhabi may be announcing a new project, as the construction of a Formula One spec race track is underway to put the place on the map.
The project is Ferrari World, a theme park currently under construction in the small gulf emirate. In addition to the race track the Ferrari World location will include hotels, a shopping complex and golf courses, two marinas, a polo field and equestrian facilities (for those other prancing horses), all on a 6000-acre plot on Yas Island, the largest isle in Abu Dhabi.
The park could now include a world-class F1-spec race track. We also understand that plans are being laid for an event on February 1 with the teams having been asked to supply a car to stire the fire over the event. So that World Champion Fernando Alonso may also be present, along with other drivers.
The theme park will open its doors in 2008, and will include virtual driving simulations as well as the racing circuit.
The newly-expanded Abu Dhabi International Airport wil be linked to the park facilitating the arriving of the tourists to this new destination.
The track will host many racing events (touring cars, GP2, Champ Cars) and should soon compete with the Bahrain circuit for a place in the F1 calendar in this region as we know that the royal family owns significant interest in two F1 teams: Ferrari (5%) and Spyker (17%).
