Ford and Top Gear Australia tinkering with new Mad Max Interceptor Concepts

  news

A lot of us were too young to remember this movie, but for those that had a chance to see George Miller’s Mad Max movie, you might have caught sight of Mel Gibson driving around in a Ford Falcon XB GT351 Interceptor. Thirty-two years after both Gibson and the Interceptor became Hollywood royalty - well we’re going to use the term royalty loosely with Gibson considering his latest personal antics -, an Australian group headed by Ford and Top Gear Australia magazine is in the process of developing two new concept studies of the Interceptor, or as we should say, a present-day take on Mad Max’s bad-ass ride.

Ford Australia formed a group of designers headlined by Todd Willing, the company’s chief of design for Asia, Pacific, and African passenger cars. Led by Willing, the team conceptualized and designed a number of design studies using the original Interceptor as the basis for their creations. In the end, the two best studies – designed by Nima Nourian and Simon Brook – were chosen for the next stage in the decision-making process.

The two designs will then be featured on a future issue of Top Gear Australia where readers will get the opportunity to vote on their preferred design, which would then be turned into a full-fledged scale model that’s scheduled to be revealed later this year.

Is this a case of nostalgia or a marketing ploy to drum up interest on what appears to be the fourth chapter of the Mad Max franchise, tentatively titled “Fury Road”? We can’t say for sure that both items are connected to each other, but it is a little coincidental, to say the least.

It’s a wonderful car for a rally. The specs are great but its sad to know that cars like this are not for sale.

Well, that’s a good news for Mad Max movie fanatic. I just seen it ones but the car stunts are incredibly great. Now, the new look of the interceptor is more amazing!

hmm. The car look so heavy including its body and the wheels..it look so futuristic though I can’t appreciate its sportiness and aggressiveness.

@adriansmith, I think what you meany was the BMW Police Interceptor. Actually, it’s not similar to this car and try to differentiate!

hmm. I think this is not the first production of Interceptor. If I could remember clearly, BMW has the same production as well. However, comparing the two the platform of this looks cooler and the exterior seems to have an aggressive design.

I think there’s something missing factor in the exterior that’s why it looks so boring. Though I believe that this car will perform good.

When i first saw the car it really makes me want to laugh at it. the design looks like a out of this world and I don’t even consider it as a future design but hideous!

It would be a better idea if this car would stay as a concept and I don’t think that ford will allow this thing to be in the production.

I don’t know if I’m going to like this car or what since the figure wasn’t mentioned here. Well, I don’t think that this car would make its way for production.

I find the car kind of heavy..I just wonder if that thing would affect the performance of the car. However, Aesthetically it looks great!
