The long-rumored and often discussed future of the Lamborghini Urus Concept finally got a huge jolt in the arm courtesy of Lamborghini->ke44 CEO, Stephan Winkelmann.

Numerous rumors have indicated that the Urus->ke3276 will eventually hit production soon, but it wasn't concrete until recently when Winkelmann put all the speculation to rest.

"We're working on it and it will come, which will be good for the brand," Winkelmann told Automotive News in Japan last week.

"We're going low profile now. I can't tell you much on details now, but when we get close to the launch, we will have more."

Those two statements, while falling short of exacting specific details about the production Urus, are as clear as any statement we've heard about the fate of the Lamborghini SUV->ke145 since the concept->ke169 made its debut at the Beijing Auto Show->ke2062 last year.

The mere fact that it came from Lamborghini's CEO means that it's about as credible a statement as it gets.

So if you've been pining to see the Lamborghini Urus hit production, you can rest easy knowing that Winkelmann has confirmed its headed there. At this point, the only question is "when?"

2012 Lamborghini Urus

Its "Urus" name is derived from one of the largest cows to ever roam the Earth at 61 to 71 inches tall at the shoulders and weighing up to 1,500 pounds. And while the SUV is still in concept form, it should be worth saying that a production model has been confirmed to arrive sooner than later.

Under the hood, the concept model features a 4.0-liter, V-8 engine fed by a pair of turbochargers. This pushes the super-SUV to 600 horsepower and an estimated 600 to 650 pound-feet or torque.

Driving the wheels is a dual-clutch automated-manual transmission with an enhanced, permanent all-wheel-drive system. We estimate the Urus hitting 60 mph in the mid- to high-3-second range.
