Be careful what you ask for, MINI; your wish just might come true.
The lovable and quirky brand has issued a challenge to Porsche. They have challenged them to a good, old fashioned race with the MINI Cooper S going fender-to-fender with Porsche’s 911 Carrera S at Road Atlanta on June 21. Mismatch on paper? Well, MINI doesn’t think so.
MINI USA President Jim McDowell, who, incidentally, spent eight years in Porsche, laid the throwdown to his Porsche counterpart Detlev von Platen to meet him at Road Atlanta with a driver of his choice to race his 911 Carrera S against McDowell’s hand-picked driver, who will sit behind the wheel of the Cooper S. In the event Porsche wins, McDowell tells von Platen that he will wear a t-shirt on his next public appearance that says, "We Did Not Beat Porsche". Should MINI end up victorious, McDowell will proudly wear a different shirt that says, "We Beat Porsche".
Somewhat surprisingly, Porsche looks to be getting warm on the idea of accepting MINI’s bold challenge so there’s a growing possibility that this challenge could very well be answered.
Like we said before, MINI better know who their barking at because just by looking at the tale of the tape - MINI comes into the race with 172 horsepower on the Cooper S while the 911 Carrera S comes in with double that at 385 horsepower - it doesn’t look like the Cooper S has a remote chance of keeping pace with the 911 Carrera S.
